He looked around, unsure, but not panicking. I had already faded into the darkness. How could he not see? Well, maybe I was just getting used to this place. I didn't know how to feel about that.
“Another snack so soon?” Ilyssa stood beside me.
“No,” I said. “This one is a true warrior.” Something inside me told me what to do, and I trusted my feeling. “Make him one of our own. He would be a great general to marshal our forces.”
“Lady,” Ilyssa began, and her voice was unsure. “It is not a thing to take lightly, the making of a vampire. Trueborn vampires are common, but one of the Unnaturals? It might not be done once in a thousand years, and even then the person is not the same as they were.”
“If it is done once in a millennia, then this shall be that once. And if he is not the same, that is well too. Make this one mine.”
“Lady,” Ilyssa's face held an emotion I could not name, “I do believe that you shall lead us to glory. He shall be as you command, but that will take time. You should heal this,” she said, raising a hand to my bleeding cheek. “It would not do for our matriarch to die before reaching her prime.”
I turned and stepped back into the world and knew that one day the world would need my army of darkness. Whether to save or destroy it would be my decision when that day came, and until then I would hold my heart true against the coming conflicts.
