The brisk night air filled the small cottage with the lingering sent of daylight. The glow of the pail moons shadow gave me a sense of relief that relaxed my whole body. I staggered out of my bed to my closet tripping over my clumsy feet. My face was wracked with silent tears as I slowly opened the closet making a high-pitched screeching noise. The air was dense and everything seemed to weep for the oncoming sorrow about to take place.
Please forgive me…
Pulling the scabbard out of its hiding place. I slowly draw the blade as the light reflects off it into my reddened eyes. My hand shakes in defiance, as I continue to draw it from its rest. My heartbeat pounds in my ears as I lift myself of the ground and slowly walk out of my room down the hallway.
I must do this…I have to or they will come…they'll take my family from me…
Tightly gripping the sheath to my side, I bring the blade to my cheek. The cold metal reminds me of my pain, sorrow and my guilt. I hold back the tears while I walk down the hallway.
The cold wooden floors send chills up and down my spine. The silence is unbearable. I look over to the living room and I remember when daddy would play thief with Maya and me. The guilt threatens to overwhelm me.
No! I have to do this I have to be strong.
Wiping away the stray hairs out of my face, I slowly open the door to my parents' room. Glancing around the room my gaze falls over my mother. Her dark black hair tied into a messy braid wrapped around her waist. Her face had some creases from scolding Maya and I when we often got into trouble, but she always had that calm serene look in her eyes like an ocean at night they threaten to pull you in. Right next to her was daddy his light brown hair ruffled from sleeping so long. Silently creeping next to his side of the bed I raise my sword and it falls swiftly down on him.
Slowly opening her eyes from the jerk on the side of the bed mom wakes up and turns to look over to her husband.
“Honey? Whats-
She looked over at her husband, his eyes closed and his face frozen peacefully. The crimson blood slowly touched her fingertips before she heard a sound so soft that she almost missed it. A sudden twinge of pain went through her neck and she fell down soundlessly.
Tears blinded me as I tried to get out of the room, and down to my sisters room.
Why do I have to do this? I'm sorry mommy, daddy…I'm sorry.
The blood dripped off the blade onto Maya's face and before she could open her eyes my arms gave out and she never moved again.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” My scram pierces the night air as I sit up in my bed. My covers are drenched in sweat. I gaze out to the darkness sensing another presence in the vast room. Slowly scanning the room, I see that the doors to the balcony are open. Slipping off the covers, my feet touch the floor that makes me tremble. I slowly walk out on the balcony and climb onto the ledge. Staring down to the cliff
“So inviting…” ,I state in a trance,” its so sad.”
Raising my arms like invisible wings while the salty breeze flew through me.
Breaking the silence was a rather haunting voice “Feels nice doesn't it?”
Turning around to face the figure I slightly tense up.
“Hey Genesis” I reply softly jumping off the ledge with grace.
“We've got a new case” she turns and walks into the living room.
Following behind her I take my seat on the couch and I stare at the envelope on the table. I look towards Genesis as she motions for me to have a cup of tea. I nod and grab the saucer I take a small sip letting the liquid warm me up inside. Glancing back up at Genesis in her pajamas. A spaghetti strap shirt and some baggy pants that are black. Her long white hair is tied back in a loose braid that falls down to her back.. I noticed her staring back at me with a great intensity.
“We've got a new customer” she handed me some documents and I started to flip through them. I looked at the targets picture when the image of my sister appeared in my mind and she was smiling, and just as quickly as the image appeared, it faded into the deep recesses of my mind.
After examining the report, I put everything back into the folder and I look over at Genesis and ask with intrigue
“What's your plan?”
She sits back, puts down her tea, and begins to ponder. Suddenly clapping her hands, she looks over towards me as if I am a new toy on Christmas that she's dying to play.
“How do you fare being a man?”
The stench of sweaty, drunken men clouded my vision.
I cannot believe this! Why do I have to be the stupid man?
Leaning back in my chair I take a sip out of the jug of ale and scanning the room. I hear a annoying high pitched laugh come from the other side of the bar. That's me cue. I finish the jug down to the last drop and stagger through the crowd of people towards Genesis. Slamming my fist down on the table, I make the whole party jump.
“Where is she?” I ask in a sluggish drunken voice. One of the men turns to me and goes pale. Turning to glance at his associate who happens to be our target trying to get approval to kill me on spot.
Do I really look that scary? Oh, goodie this is going to be fun.
Genesis is right next to the target serving him his drugged drink. The poison should take effect in 5 minutes, until then I have to cause a big distraction. I glare up at the boy.
“Where is she”, I raise my voice “, where is my wife?”
“Um….umm…..” he stutters glancing back to Genesis silently asking her to leave.
“Oh dear me, I think that I have different tables to serve” she smiled and walked away from the table behind the bar.
Yippee, I get to have some fun here. I crack my knuckles at him.
“Let's get this started” I grin.
Jabbing him right under his left lung he falls down gasping for air.
“Awe are you done so soon? I thought that you'd be more of a challenge,” I laugh.
