Rose and Regina

The wind blew through the girls' hair brushing it across the face of immortality. A small stack of broken yellow pencils sat in front of them as they sat on the roof of the elementary school. It was a quiet summer night with a bit of a chill. A soft whisper of tree branches gazing each other was the only noise other than the breathing coming from the black-clad figures.

One stood up with a bronze tan look about her only an inch above five feet tall. Piecing blue eyes stared into the utter darkness. “He isn't coming tonight. Might as well just…” The sound of a car parking in the lot next to the west side of the building caught their attention.

Stealthily they walked across the roof just to be caught in the spot light. “We have you surrounded. Stay up there with your hands up.” Both girls looked at each other and then around the premises. Sticking their hands up in the air; the other stood next to her friend. “Well we got shit faced now didn't we?” She asked her friend lightly.

“Caroline Regina Pearson! What do you think you were doing?! And Jaci you too! I can't believe you girls would actually go up on a school roof and expect not to be caught!”

Caroline tried to explain to her mom, Louise, what they were doing but was at a loss for words, when she asked why they snuck out. Pulling the whole motherly guilt trip. Both girls hung their heads solemnly.

Louise sent both girls to Caroline's room after Brock, Caroline's stepfather, had nailed the screen to the window. Caroline sat on the cold, white tiled floor staring in the mirror. Her face was half ashamed and half pissed off. Jaci was lying in a tight ball on the blue, soft, blanket thinking what kind of punishment she would receive when she went back home in three days.

Jaci finally spoke up; the silence was driving her insane. “We didn't even do anything wrong.” She whispered so if Louise was at the door it was inaudible. Caroline didn't move. When she knew she did something wrong she was silent.

Jaci sat up and let the thick wave of brown hair fall into her face as she let tears fall. She hated letting Louise down. In a way she was like a second mother that she had known since third grade. Her ivory skin grew goose bumps and she continued with her crying. She shook slightly and bowed her head. She was going to be in so much trouble.

Caroline climbed onto the bed with her friend and hugged her. Both were now crying. The bronze girl set her head on her friend's shoulder and vise versa. They got caught, all for a guy.

First let's start at the beginning. Jaci was visiting her best friend Caroline that she had known since third grade, about five-six years ago. They were in a small town south of Salem called Sweethome. Corny name huh? It was a small town where nothing bad really happened. Until Caroline and Jaci began stirring it up.

They told a guy they knew, Mike, to meet them on the roof of the school. They were having an after curfew scavenger hunt. All you had to do was get six broken pencils from under the crazy teachers tree at the junior high then hi-tail it out and to the elementary rooftop where they could write random things.

Apparently though Mike had gotten caught sneaking out and ratted out Caroline and Jaci so now both girls are in a type of house arrest till Jaci's dad can come and get her come two hundred and thirty miles away in Tacoma. That's about a 4 and a half-five-hour drive.

So in the dark the girls sat with only their belongings to keep them company. Mary and her friends were laughing loudly outside Caroline's window
Clearing making fun of the fact they couldn't get out. Then an idea came to the girls. In a low whisper Caroline leaned over to her friends ear. “We should runaway.”

Jaci's face was a prefect Kodak picture moment. Shock mixed with confusion. “Are you sure?” She asked uncertainly.

“It's the only way we can be together and free from our parents. Plus think how great it would be! Us two living on our own!”

Jaci let her head fall back as she thought about it. “It's like a dream come true but what about food and money?” Always the pessimistic one, Jaci was.

“If we need too we can steal. Plus we can take some of the food my mom bought today!” She had an eager look on her face. “And if it really comes down to it.” She pulled out a razor blade. “You know.”

Jaci nodded agreeing with her. Life just wasn't the same. It was just flat out horrible for both of them. And it's not just the regular `teenage rebellion' either. Oh no. Both girls were in a desperate situation and in desperate situations you have to take desperate measures.

As night fell both girls were packed with only essentials like food and clothing. Tonight they would go to Safeway and steal a few extra things they didn't have. This was the moment of truth. As the clock struck midnight both girls cut through the window screen with scissors and jumped out. The sun was completely set and the moon was out leading their path to freedom.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Jaci asked for finality.

“Yes. I do.” Caroline answered.

“Good. `Cause so do I.” They then made their way down the streets of the mobile home park to the main street that would lead them to the grocery store.
