Legend of Zelda

Sage Wars: Key

Act I: Future Sights

"Gather around" a small voice bellowed to the children of Kokiri, the village of the Deku guardians. The thing about the Kokiri is, they're short. Very short. Tallest Kokiri to record was five foot four, which was a giant among them.

"Navi, do you have another story?" asked one of the children, his orange hair hanging down into his face.

Navi, the owner of the small voice, nodded with a happy smile on her face. Navi was a fairy, which means she was smaller then even Kokiri, standing at about five inches. Her body gave off an entrancing aura, much like most fairies do, though Navi's glowed light blue.

"Okay Children, I am going to tell you a story, like I do every day. But this is going to be a special story."

"What is so specially about it?" A green haired girl asked as she tied her locks back.

Navi giggled at the children's curiosity then explained.

"Well, you've all heard the Legend of Zelda right?" They all nodded and added comments, "Well, this is the real Legend. Of what really happened. This is the true Legend, and though Princess Zelda is in it, it doesn't center around her..."

...Link shot up, with heavy amounts of perspiration on his body. His long blond hair was in a wild mess and his bangs were sticking to his forehead. His blue eyes darted around the room, searching for proof that he was safe at home, in his bed. This was all quickly confirmed as he scanned the room. It was an old wooden room, with few things to occupy space. Next to the bed, which sat in the top right corner, was a table with a lantern on it, and right below the bed on the wall was a closed window. Resting next to the bed, closer then the table, was a sheathed Kokiri broadsword and a weak wooden shield. Next to those were a green tunic, white pants, leather boots and gloves, and a white T-shirt.

"It's all the same", the young Hylian assured himself, his voice heavy and panting. It had been the same for the past week. Night after night he had this dream, a dream of seven years ago, when he was only twelve. Why, after seven years, was this all coming back to haunt him. The death of his friend, and his own family, all of it caused by himself.

Link stood, pushing off the covers and walked over to the closed window to gaze out at the night scenery. It was just like during the day, except no one was out there. There was still smoke rising from the ashes of the old flame that sat in the middle of the Guardian's village.

"To serve and protect those who hire us. How long will this job satisfy me?" he spoke into the window, causing it to fog up. His eyes turned to the heavens, to look at the stars and the moon, which lit up the skies. "Or is it even satisfying me at all?" Link sighed and turned, "No time to think, I leave at dawn for Kokiri."

The sun rose far to quickly for Link's liking. It lit up the Guardian village with its shining golden rays. Links wooden door was knocked on, and he sat up again. He shuffled out of bed, and grabbed his items. After a quick bath in the public bathing hole, he dressed and left for his journey to Kokiri, the village of the Deku. Someone had hired him to look for the missing Kokiri women. It seemed that the girls had been disappearing and the village was quickly becoming all male. Kokiri's would die out if all the females disappeared, so they called him in.

Unfortunately, Link had to walk by foot.

"Ahh, too hot, I should have gotten a horse when I had the chance. What was that things name? Spic? Cracker? Nigger? Chink? Jap?" He couldn't remember, and really the beasts name didn't matter, as long as it could carry him. It was a long walk to Kokiri from the Guardian village. Sure, Hyrule's Field is relatively safe by day, but at night some scary things could crawl out. Things that have died once already, swarming you, consuming you, ripping apart you flesh and grinding your bones. Things that you cannot kill, the most you can do is run, and even then you won't escape.

Link stopped and gazed across the field. It was midday and he was heavy with sweat. The poor boy only had half a canteen of water left and he still had to walk the rest of the day, which he was well on his way of doing, but something caught his eye. A tall tower, or rather, a mountain, with a wall at the bottom. The mountain reached far up into the clouds, beyond his sight. He remembered the village; it was once bustling with people, now it home to nothing but dust. That was the ancient village of Hyrule Castle Town.

"Tod, where'd you go? What happened, that night, those seven years ago?" His voice was light on the humid summer air. "No time to waste I must go." He turned and walked off, leaving the ruins behind him. He was not there anymore, he wasn't that Link, he was an adult now!

The sun set as he neared the village gate. As the sun fell the sky turned a mixed color of Pink, red and violet, all falling upon themselves, creating an amazing painting in the sky.

The guardian walked up to the village gate, which stood right open for him to enter. When he entered he found quite the little village. A small river ran through it and tree stumps were carved out and turned into houses. All the people were half his size, with small dots of various colors following them around.

Link, with a puzzled look, found one of them and tapped him on the shoulder, "Excuse me, is this Kokiri?"

The Kokirian sneered and turned, "Well, yea, of course, where else would you find Kokiri people?"

The Guardian gave a thoughtful look to the sky and scratched his face. "Where are all the adults?" He asked innocently. The man turned red in the face. A foot lashed out and hit Link on the shin, sending pain through his body. "Ow! What was that for?"

The Kokiri just turned and ignored him. The blond Hylian looked at him, bewildered, then turned and walked off. "What the hell was that all about?" After the little interaction he walked off to find the inn, which was a nice building, and the largest in the village. Compared to the rest of the village, it was a mansion. But that was due to the fact that not everyone in who visited was four foot tall, which Link soon found out. He learned that Kokiri people are actually just short. After a quick apology and a vague explanation it was all cleared up.

After that Link hired a guide to show him around the town. She was a cute little Kokiri female, a priestess actually, named Saria. Saria was average for Kokiri, standing at three foot nine inches; she had light yellowish skin with dark green hair and lime highlights that hung to her waist. She wore an emerald colored suit that had its legs cut off at the bottom making them look like shorts. A large black leather belt was wrapped around her waist to tighten her suit. On her feet she wore two rubbery boots and under her body suit she wore a skintight black sweater.

"This way mister Link," the young priestess spoke in a sweet tone to the guardian. They were walking through a hollowed out log that acted as a hallway of sorts. She told him that they were heading to the shrine, and then ran off. Ever since then they'd been moving at a very quick pace.

Link sighed as he pushed some fallen vines out of his face, "Why is this `shrine' so important?" he asked tiredly.

She giggled lightly, her voice echoing through the log. "There we can pray for the safe return of the girls." After explaining she quickened her pace once again. Link followed her in movement instantly, even though the idea of praying for their returne didn't appeal to him.

After a while they finally came to a stop. At the end of the longest hollow log he had ever seen, they found a large tree that reached high into the sky, with roots the size of a house burrowing in and out of the ground. An old face was carved into the trunk, or maybe the tree itself had a face. In front of it a small stream flowed, and in front of the steam was a box that held unlit candles. They looked as if they had been burned recently though.

"Now," she spoke softly, catching Link's attention, "get to your knees and bow." She did as she instructed, then he followed. She started to hum, and closed her eyes, while Link sat there, his head in his hands and his eyes staring at the grassy ground. "Please, Deku tree, return th-" her voice stopped as another voice echoed around.

"Why do you want them back so bad?" the echoing voice questioned. Link stood and looked about for the owner to the voice. High in the branches of the `Great Deku Tree" stood a man in a black cloak that had holes and tears at the bottom. Under his cloak he wore a loose gray shirt, navy blue pants and leather gloves and boots. His left hand loosely held the hilt of a blade that rested on his left shoulder. Sticking out of the hood of his cloak were a few oily black spikes, and piercing silver eyes penetrated Link's soul.

"Tod?" He spoke, his voice barely audible. Could it be have been him, his long lost friend, who disappeared all those years ago on the night of the storm?

"Link? Good to see you fare well. I figured that I'd see you again, you've always had a strong spirit," the cloaked figure spoke, humor lacing his words. "What business have you here?"

Link gritted his teeth, "Don't patronize me Tod! You're the one, aren't you?" A gloved fist was waved in the direction of the higher branches.

Tod grinned, "I see, the Guardians?" Tod looked displeased by all of these happenings, "Never expected to see you as a Guardian, but I suppose I cant choose your destiny for you, now can I? Had to grow up sometime, just into a hero? C'mon! You'll be walked all over, and you won't even get anything good out of it!" Tod laughed loudly.

Saria glared, "Why are you kidnapping the girls?"

"Tis' all your fault, my dear priestess," his face became serious and his eyes turned to the Kokiri girl, "We've been looking for you."

Link looked at the shocked young female, then back at his old friend. "What's so important about her?"

Tod's eyes glanced behind him, and then turned to Link. "You needn't know. But, ye best do your job, protect her, guardian, at least long enough for me to take her off your hands." With those words said, he leapt off into the shadows.

The Hylian's gloved hand flew out, but it was to late, Tod was gone. Suddenly a noise caught the two's ears. "Oh no, the guardian of the forest is here." The blond looked down at his employer who was sitting on her knees. Suddenly the noise grew louder. It sounded like something scrapping on wood. A large four-legged beast walked down the trees face to its bottom lip and stopped. One eye scanned the area and its large yellow fangs opened letting out a shriek, along with a large amount of drool.

Link drew his short sword from the sheath that was belted around his waist, "Do not worry!" He exclaimed, "I'll protect you!"
