Salamander By Ian Gainsborough   Author’s Note: I like Teen Titans. So I must apologize in advance to say that this is my first Fic. I think I’ve seen a few episodes enough to know how it goes. And if not, then I’ll see if I can get a DVD or two to watch on my free time.

Chapter 1: Enter Salamander

The day was pretty much like every other day, fighting with Cyborg for the remote, fighting a monster assaulting the city’s population, going back to fighting Cyborg for the remote. Today, it was a little different. Instead, Beast Boy was fighting with Robin for the remote. Then the klaxons sounded and now he was fighting against another monster. The monster bashing was an everyday thing, Beast Boy thought, At least, I think it is.

This time, though, the monster was fifteen feet tall, every blue scale reflecting the sunlight of the rather cool summer day. It gave a cold terrifying roar, slashing for Starfire as she circled it once.

"I am not seeing such weakness for the monster," Starfire reported, before a blast of icy cold breath froze her solid. Starfire dropped like a brick, only to land safely thanks to Raven.

"Titans!" Robin shouted, extending one of his poles. "Move out!" Robin leapt atop a car, then onto the behemoth’s slippery blue scaly hide. Getting a good foothold, Robin began beating on the scales with his staff, with little effect. The behemoth just brushed Robin off its shoulder, trundling towards Cyborg, who took aim for a plasma shot.

"Ice this you freak!" Cyborg shouted, a stream of blue ions reflecting harmlessly off. "Dammit! I was certain that would work!"

"Azarath Metrion Zinthos!" Raven shouted, black energy shard raining down upon the beast, again with little effect.

"Nothing can beat this thing!" Beast Boy realized aloud, before frozen in a block of ice. Suddenly and out of nowhere, there was a cry, a loud, crisp voice clipping the air with a tinge of heat.

"Flame Masamune!" The teen slashed wildly along the width and length of the monster, the massive burning katana in his hand looking like a stream of fire with every slash. Suddenly as he appeared, he stopped. The four-foot long katana vanishing like an ember taking its last warm breath in the cold darkness. The figure stooped, propped up on his knees. He looked tired, but stood straight to face Raven, Cyborg and Robin. Still paying attention to the teen that just saved their lives the Titans failed to notice the handiwork of the teen’s attack. The monster was long gone, turning into a puddle of water.

"Woah," Robin raised an eyebrow. "So…who are you exactly?" The young man looked about, as though thinking Robin was addressing someone else.

"You talking to me?" he asked, gesturing to himself. Robin nodded and approached the teen. His fiery red hair was long, going well past his shoulders, with a goatee fading in. He was slightly taller than Raven, but with broader shoulders. He wore a red long T and darker red pants. Over his shirt was a red plaid open button-down shirt.

"I asked you your name," Robin insisted.

"Name’s Salamander," the teen replied after a glance to the other four Titans surrounding him, Starfire and Beast Boy frozen in blocks of ice still.

"Interesting power, Salamander," Robin stated.

"Pyrokinesis isn’t something common everyday, you know," Salamander shrugged. "Mind if I thaw your friends out?"

"By all means," Robin stepped aside, Salamander approaching the frozen Starfire and placed a hand against the cold ice face. Soon enough, the ice began to melt, and Starfire began to get feeling back, as she squirmed herself free. Lifting into the air, Starfire stared down at Salamander, before landing.

"I am most grateful to you, kind sir for unfreezing me," she bowed to Salamander. The redhead raised a hand to stop her.

"No big deal," he shrugged. He was stopped as Starfire wrapped her arms around his shoulders, squeezing him tightly in an overly friendly embrace; which was to the point of Salamander’s eyes bulging.

"Can’t…breath," Salamander managed to wheeze out before Robin figured that enough. Salamander managed to straighten himself out, getting the chinks out of his spine and then going over to the frozen Beast Boy, who apparently was in the process of changing form.

"Actually, on second thought, why not keep Beast Boy on ice for now and then chip chunks of ice off him during parties?" Cyborg suggested, Raven emitting a little smirk at the thought. Robin shot him a glare; Cyborg shrugging as though thinking it was a good idea at first. Salamander cracked his knuckles, rubbing his hands together, slowly at first but then built speed. Before everyone else knew it, an amazing blast of flame consumed the ice block, Beast Boy coming round in a matter of seconds, before realizing his hind quarters were smoking. Quickly changing to a dog, Beast Boy butt-scooted around until he found a puddle of the remaining ice monster.

"What did you say your name was?" Raven asked, descending from the air to size up the teen.

"Salamander," Salamander answered, rather winded with his stooped figure.

"Isn’t a Salamander like a lizard?" Beast Boy asked, rubbing his charred butt.

"You of all people should know a Salamander is an amphibian, Beast Boy," Raven crossed her arms in her statement.

"Oh yeah," Beast Boy thought back.

"We are very pleased you are willing to fight with us, Salamander," Starfire added.

"It’s no big deal," Salamander shrugged, finally standing upright. "I was just in the right place at the right time. And if it helps at all, you can just call me Sal."

"Well anyway, thanks for the help," Robin nodded quickly. "We had better be returning to the Tower, now."

"Now hang on a sec," Salamander stopped Robin before he could turn away. "That’s not fair. I introduce myself to some strangers after saving them from having their asses handed back to them and not get some names." Robin wasn’t in the best of moods. Some guy from out of nowhere totally lays the smackdown on a giant icy lizard he had been fighting for half an hour and now this guy wanted names? Visibly, Robin’s eye twitched. A quick introduction was passed around the five to the guest.

"The Teen Titans, huh?" Salamander asked. "Yeah, I believe I’ve heard of you. Been on the hunt for some guy named Slade, was it?"

"Yeah," Robin nodded, before realizing aloud, "Hey, how did you know about that?"

"In all truth I’m on the same quest as you guys," Sal shrugged.

"We are most gracious in your company, mister Sal, sir," Starfire commented. "Would you be honored in our presence to stay for a while at the Tower?"

"Hold it," Robin stopped Starfire from latching onto Salamander again. "We’re not letting him in so easily." Sal raised an eyebrow at this. "Titans, huddle."

"So what’s the big deal, Robin?" Cyborg asked, the Titans huddled together.

"I don’t trust him," Robin stated the obvious. "Something doesn’t seem right about him. I can’t put my finger on it."

"He seems normal to me," Raven put her two cents in. "I don’t sense anything wrong about him."

"Seems like a nice guy to me if he can thaw me out a chunk of ice," Beast Boy averred.

"He is very kindhearted to thaw me out," Starfire added. "I would trust him very much.’

"Alright, we’ll let him in but if he’s trouble, he’s gone, understand?" Robin negotiated.
