The door slid open and Ro ran in the room with a note and threw it under San’s face. Ro ran to the wall, opened a drawer, and pulled out lots of clothing and various pads of paper and pencils into her shoulder pack. San read the note aloud. “Head console says ‘The enemies watched the handful of survivors come back to the hold. They know where we are.’ Woman next to him says ‘This puts us all in danger. We need to flee obviously.’ Head console says ‘No, there is nowhere to go to, and even if we did have somewhere to go the people would be afraid and the enemy would just follow us. We must stay and fight! The enemy will chase us down and hunt us like wild animals if we do not stay and protect ourselves. We need to stay and fight if we don’t-‘ Woman next to him says ‘-if we stay and fight we will all die trying and that helps no one!’ someone else says ‘I agree with her, we need to leave before they attack.’ Head console says ‘No! I am in charge and I say we stay and that is final!’” San’s eyes grew very large and round as she re-reads the page, fully understanding what was happening to her and her holding.

Ro came over to the bed and wrote on the paper. “They could attack anytime and we will be unprepared. We need to leave before we are attacked.” Ro went back to the wall and continued to pull things out and pack them away in her pouch. San got up and put her arms around Ro. Ro tried to continue her packing but San picked Ro up and brought her over to the bed and sat her down. Ro looked at San questioningly.

“Ro I understand you are afraid and do not want to stay. Ro, we cannot run away and hide. For what it is worth, I am queen Sancha of the Katureol order. Even more, I am the leader of all the survivors, and I must fight besides my people.” Kuto looked between San and Ro and was hit with a sudden blast of insight. Sancha and Roweina. The princesses of the Katureol Empire. These girls need to have protection, for they are the lasts of the empire. Yet San is also the leader of the surviving army and felt obligated to fight along side her army.

Ro grabbed the pad of paper and quickly scribbled down a note. Ro then handed it to San. San read “You must go and nobody will blame you for leaving. It is your responsibility to rebuild the once great Katureol Order” San looked up and saw Ro glance at Kuto and blush. San shook her head and read on. “If you don’t leave then the order will be extinguished. We must leave now San!” Kuto looked between San and Ro and sighed.

“I know how you feel San. Your obligations are stretching you in two opposite ways. I know it is hard but you must leave. There is a holding about fifty miles deeper into the forest that we can go to. No one lives there. I was staying there before I came here. We can go there if you want to. I require aid if I am to move, but once I heal I can protect you and your sister.”

San sighed and shook her head for a moment before looking back up at Ro. “All right, we can go, Ro, we will need to cash in all your food tokens OK?” Ro nodded and pulled out a handful of tokens and put them in San’s lap. Ro got up and went to a hidden drawer in the corner. Ro pulled the drawer open and pulled out a huge handful of food tokens and put them in San’s lap. “Wow Ro this is over a year’s supply!” Ro nodded and pulled more tokens out of various hiding places around the room. Ro continued to fill San’s lap until San felt like she was going to drop them all.

Ro went to the bags hanging on the wall, poked, and prodded until she found one that she approved of. Ro pulled it down and looked into it. Ro smiled and pulled out another handful of coins. Ro then brought the bag to San and put the handful into the bag. San smiled and dumped the coins into the bag. “Wow Ro, that totally filled the bag up. I think we can even pay for a gravity free lift to carry all our stuff and Kuto on.”

Ro and San walked down the hall, pushing the gravity free lift. The bottom half was so full of food it seemed as if it would all come tumbling out. Ro opened the door and San pushed the cart in. San pulled the cart into the middle of the room. “Ro, you get all our stuff gathered and put it into the bottom compartment. I will get Kuto and the bed things.” Kuto smiled and sat up. San put her left hand behind Kuto’s shoulders and her right hand under his knees.

San picked Kuto up and brought him across to the cart. San sat him on the cart, pulled off the sheets from the bed, and put them on the cart. “Hey Ro, pull these over the cart to make it more comfortable.” Kuto blushed as San pulled him up again and Ro made the cart up like a bed. San put Kuto down, went to her bed, pulled the sheets off, and placed them over Kuto.

“You don’t have to do that for me your majesty.” Kuto said looking down. San laughed and Ro smiled as she packed up the last of the things.

“Don’t call me that Kuto! I have been called that all my life and I am so sick of being treated as if I am any better than anyone else!” San said with a slight touch of annoyance in her voice. San rechecked all the drawers and under both beds before pushing the cart out of the room. Ro looked back one more time at the room she had called home for almost eight years. Ro sighed and pushed the door closed one last time.

San smiled at Ro. San understood what emotional roller coaster Ro was going through right now. Ro had lived in that little room for as far back as her memory would allow. As Ro walked down the dim hallway, she was lost in memories. Ro had lived in the hold for most of her life, and all of her memories centered around it. Ro realized that she would probably not see any of the people that live here ever again. Ro thought about all her friends and how they would be utterly clueless as to the goings on of the council.

Ro realized that she would probably never see her Quip again. Ro stopped walking at this realization. “How would she live without even being able to see Quip? Quip was her best friend and crush. She had never told him and now she would never have a chance. Quip couldn’t leave his post could he? San was leaving all her responsibilities behind, couldn’t Quip leave too? Maybe Quip didn’t like her as anything more than a friend and wouldn’t want to go.” Ro started walking again and caught up with San. San looked over at Ro questioningly. Ro smiled weakly at San and San continued down the hall.

San turned the corner and stopped in front of Quip. “Hey Quip, we need to leave, will you open the door for us please?” Quip looked first to the man on the cart then to the food at the bottom and then at San. Quip sighed and looked at Ro for a long moment. Quip noticed the tears in her eyes and wondered why she was so upset. Quip starred at Ro and understood. Ro looked down at her feet and San cleared her throat. Quip looked quickly back at San and shook his head sadly.

“San you know it is against the rules and I will be punished if I let you go.” Ro looked up at San then she glanced at Quip. “Where will you go? You can’t just leave. You can’t.” Quip glanced over at Ro and thought about all the time they had spent together. How could he be without her?

San frowned. “Quip, please. We need to leave. You may come with if you wish. There is enough food and room if you wish to come.” Quip hung his head, shaking it slightly, and hit the door release button. The door slid open with a metallic grinding sound. “Thank you, Quip.” San pushed the cart forward and out of the opening and hit a switch to make the cart levitate up and between the roots under which the opening hid.

San looked back at Ro and nodded. Ro hung back until she was out of view of San and hugged Quip. Quip gasped as Ro looked up at him and kissed him directly on the lips. Quip blushed as Ro ran out the door and jumped the gap to the outside. The door slammed shut behind her. San looked at her little sister and raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
