It was night and the forest was alive with the sounds of the forest. Crickets chirped and frogs croaked. Insects buzzed, hummed, and squeaked as San lead the way through the forest, directed by Kuto. Ro was quiet and tried not to cry at the loss of Quip. For many years, Quip had been Ro’s only friend, and was still her only true friend. Quip understood her. When Ro was around Quip, she wasn’t self-conscious or worried about differences. Ro could be herself and not be worried about trying to seem smart or clever because Quip would not judge or criticize her.
Quip understood how it felt to be underestimated and judged for having a so-called handicap. Quip was born with two opposable thumbs on his left hand. Quip’s thumbs were actually an improvement in Ro’s eyes because the thumbs were on opposite sides of his hand; he had a very strong and secure grip. Quip tended to keep his hand hidden or at an angle, so you couldn’t tell he was ‘malformed.’ Quip was lucky he didn’t have six fingers on his left hand Ro had often teased. His hand looked almost normal. Quip always countered with a remark about how Ro’s inability to talk was the same way; hard to notice.
San stopped suddenly and Ro, rapped up in her thoughts, ran right into San. San laughed and announced that they had arrived. Ro smiled weakly. San asked how the door opened and Kuto told her to pull him closer to the tree. San obliged and Kuto felt around the tree and pushed a button. A keypad popped out of the bark and Kuto typed in a long code. The door moaned as it pulled open and out.
The door had obviously not opened in a long while and rusted. A blast of stagnant air hurled out and San Ro and Kuto gasped at the stench. “Well, here we are.” Stated Kuto when the smell had cleared. “It isn’t the best place and it will probably need some fixing but it is relatively safe. No one but me has used this place for a while and it needs some fresh air. Besides that it should be fine.” San sighed and pushed Kuto into the opening, and Ro followed closely behind.
