"Mayhem, I said, sit down!" Bloodbath said, exasperated. Mayhem continued to bounce around the room until Diablo caught her around the waist and picked her up. In moments, the 6-year-old girl was gone and Diablo was holding an overgrown wolf pup. "Shift," he ordered. There was Mayhem again, staring, reproachfully, at her father.
He sat her on the couch, in front of Bloodbath. She stayed put, squirming, as her mother untangled her long, waist-length black hair. From across the living room, Rascal stuck his tongue out at her and Scamp giggled. Though 7-year-old Rascal's hair was long, like his father, Prank's, he already had it pulled back into a braid. Scamp wore his blond hair cut short, also like his father, Echo's.
The boys were Vampi-Wolves, half blood drinker, and half wild animal. Their mothers, Chaos and Jinx, were both vampiresses while their fathers were Wolves, from the same Pack.
Prank and Echo came downstairs and Diablo looked up. "What's up?" "War's run is tonight," said Prank. "Everyone's meeting at the cliff. Ready boys?" asked Echo. Scamp and Rascal leapt to their feet. "Be careful!" Chaos called, coming downstairs. "Always," said Prank, following his over-excited son outside.
Once, the entire Pack had lived in this house, but now only Diablo, Prank, Bloodbath, Chaos, Rascal and Mayhem lived there. The others had moved to another house, not too far away. War was to be taken into the Pack on this night and it would be Scamp and Rascal's first Pack Run.
"Well, ladies, shall we hunt while the boys are out?" asked Chaos. "Yeah!!" said Mayhem, leaping up off the couch. "Sure," said Bloodbath, slightly less enthusiastic than her daughter.
Chaos walked between the two Shi-Wolves, through the trees. Hearing voices and seeing the flicker of a bonfire, they slowed their approach.
"Who's there?" a girl's voice demanded. Chaos stepped into the light. "Just me. It's okay, I won't hurt you," she lied. There was a girl, about 16, with short, red hair, hazel eyes and a light sprinkling of freckles. Beside her was a boy, maybe 18 or 19, with long blond hair and strangely familiar blue green eyes. "Who are you?" asked the boy. "Chaos. Who are you?" "Storm. This is my sister, Winter." "So, what are you doing out here?" Chaos asked. She could hear Bloodbath and Mayhem in the trees, ready to strike. "Nothing," said Winter, nervously, somehow picking up on the tension of the Shis. Chaos heard a growl and Bloodbath and Mayhem jumped into the clearing.
That was when Winter and Storm revealed how they'd received their names. Before them stood two snow white Wolves, baring their teeth and snarling. Chaos looked from the white Wolves to the black Wolves and sighed. "Well, Hell, this ain't gonna work!"
