As I rode home with Macotay that night, I thought of what I was going to say at the paring ceremony. I glanced at Macotay, whom was sitting on sugars head.
Macotay was so handsome in the twilight, with his back rippling with muscles as he stroked Sugar’s head with his finely made hands. How I wished I could hold Macotay in my arms just once, just so I could see how it felt like to have him hold me, to kiss me.
Macotay turned and looked at m for a moment, cocking his head to the side as he did so. Macotay blushed and turned away suddenly, and for a moment, I wondered if he had already been able t o read my thoughts. I quickly forgot this thought and laughed at Macotay, because his turning away did not hide his blush, for his ear-points were bright red.
As we headed around the corner and into view of the house, my breath caught in my throat. The sun had gone down, and the house glowed with the golden glimmer of fey. The house was decorated to look like it had been placed in a fire, and it seemed as if it somehow glittered with magic.
There were many people inside chatting, and eating the meal my mother had made. I realized with quite a shock that it was all for Macotay and I. Macotay seemed as shocked as I was to see the display and for a moment, we just sat there entranced with the view. Sugar whinnied and made Macotay and I snap out of our shock.
“That’s….” Macotay said looking paler than I had ever seen him. Macotay swallowed, and gave it another try. “There’s… more… many…” Macotay sighed and shook his head. “That is lots of people.” He finally spit out.
I looked at him and nodded my head. I knew he was afraid, and so was I, but if I let him know how afraid I was, we would both be scared by each-others fears. I brought Sugar around the barn and put her into her stall. I took her saddle off and brushed her down. Sugar whinnied as I put a fresh bail of hay into the feed box and hung the saddle on its rack.
Macotay and I snuck around the house and into my still ajar window. I pulled out an outfit from the dresser; a pair of green slacks and a modest off-white tank top. Macotay looked away as I quickly slipped into the outfit. To my dismay the both the shirt and the pants were a bit tighter than last time I wore them, making both items skin-tight.
I announced to Macotay that I had finished changing if he wanted to turn around, but he had disappeared from the spot he previously stood. I shrugged and pulled my hair tie out the small top drawer of the dresser. I started to braid my hair, as there was a knock on my door. I stopped messing with my hair and opened the door.
Macotay flew in the window just as I opened the door. I opened the door but there was no one there. I looked down and saw a small box. I picked the box up and closed the door to my room. I sad upon my bed and placed the box in front of me and slipped the card out of the ribbon that had been holding it to the box. I opened the card and saw the even and practiced writing of my mother.
I looked at Macotay and smiled. He had changed into a formal pair of black pants and a long-sleeved shirt with a collar. He still lacked shoes, but this was the most clothing I had ever seen him wear. I read the card and looked over at Macotay. The card only said ‘To my darling girl. Love Mom”
I smiled at Macotay and pulled the box open. There was a lot of shiny metallic paper inside the box. I pulled the paper out of the box carefully, and unveiled a silver chain. I gently pulled on the chain until it came out of the box.
The chain was silvery but it was lighter and shinier. There was a small jewel set into a small charm that dangled down from the chain. I smiled and put the chain around my neck, removing an older golden one. I put the old necklace into my jewelry box and shut it carefully.
I took a deep breath and mentally prepared myself to go face the large group of people that awaited our arrival. Macotay and I went out my room and paused on the landing. People crowded every corner of the room, threatening to burst out of the house. I had never seen so many people in one place in my life. Macotay looked over at me from his place on my shoulder and seemed to be feeling the same nervousness I was feeling. I gulped and started down the stairs, trying to locate my mother.
Macotay and I were still not able to talk to others and we knew that everyone would try to make us talk. As a final test, everyone that is invited to the ceremony tries to make the chosen ones talk. If they talk then they are not joined and have to start the process over again.
As I walked across the crowded room several groups tried to make either Macotay or me talk to them. One group that made me consider talking was a group of boys my age. One boy in the group was one that I had had a crush on for quite some time.
Cory had light blond hair and intense blue eyes that seemed to see through to your very soul. Cory stepped away from the crowd of boys as they mocked and teased. Cory walked up to me and kissed me, smack dab on the lips. I gasped and looked at him in shock. Cory smiled and looked over at Macotay, who was furious. Cory laughed and asked me if I wanted to talk to him for a little bit in private. After a long moment of deliberation I shook my head no and walked away.
My head swam in a blur of confusion as I walked to the end of the hall. I wasn’t sure if Cory actually liked me, or if he had been trying to make me talk. Everything had been moving so fast lately that I could barely keep track of it all. My life had been moving so fast all of the sudden, and I didn’t know how to deal with all the important changes.
After what seemed like a few hours of wandering around the house, a bell was wrung and everyone started to take their seats. Macotay and I were ushered up onto a stage that had been set up. We stood next to my mother and father, as a man started speaking to the group. I was so nurvious that I didn't really hear what the man was saying.
Macotay and I were pushed up infront of the micraphone and were told that our period of silence was compleat. Everyone began claping for us. My knees felt like jello as I stood up infront of all these people.
As I scanned the faces of all the people, I realized that I knew most of them, and Macotay probably knew the fae that I didn't know, so it wasn't such a big deal. I relaxed and smiled out at the croud.
The man took the place next to me and began to speak of the acheavment Macotay and I had made, the man continued to speak as I faded in and out of attention to what he was saying.
I was snapped to reality as everyone started clapping and chearing. I glanced at Macotay, and he smiled sheepishly, as if to say he hadn't been paying any more attention than I had. I looked at my mother and thought about how happy she looked, and smiled. The man that had been speaking came and stood next to me once again.
"Shay, are you going to join with Macotay?" I gulped and smiled at Macotay's nurvious glance towards me. I couldn't manage more than a nod as everyone's attention was focused on me. The man smiled and looked over at Macotay. "Macotay, are you going to join with Shay?" Macotay must have felt the same weight on him as he nodded and smiled at me.
The man that had been speaking came to us and began to whisper into my ear as Macotay listened closley. The rest of the people started talking amongst themselves, as he whispered the ancient secret in my ear. Macotays eyes went wide and I was shocked at what the man had to tell us as well.
The crowds noise died down as the man stepped away from us and smiled down at them. We smiled out at them and saw the knowing looks in the eyes of thoes who had been joined with a fae kind. Macotay and I both smiled broadly as we realized we had joined the ranks of the joined.
A man stood up from the crowd and pointed a gun at me. I gasped and started to shake. The crowd gasped and the man that had been talking looked terafied. I glanced over at my parents to see my mother stark white and wide eyed. I realized this wasn't another test and began to shake even more.
"They are not joined yet, they are just confirmed, they can tell me the secret, and if they don't I will kill them." the man said as he cocked the gun and took aim. I looked around and saw the fear I felt refelected in every face in the crowd.
"Shay," My mother whispered as she found her voice. "run. Take macotay and run, the old back way, the forest, go!" My mother screamed the last word and I bolted out of the room, I heard a gun shot and a scream but I didn't dare to look back. Macotay was with me on my shoulders as we ran through the feilds towards the forest.
