Lost and Found

The scent of snow and ice filled the young white and tan she-wolf’s nose as she ran alongside she chosen mate. She and her mate were all that was left of their pack. The early snow and the arrival of humans and their fire sticks had driven off many herds of prey leaving them to find food where they could. The woods which once was filled with all kinds of prey was now very low on food and water. Glancing toward her mate she watched as the midnight black male wolf ran beside her in all his glory. He was well muscled like all males but he was larger than most males could even hope to be even at his age he’d been birthed two summers ago which made him two seasons older than her.
Rave, he was their old pack leader’s first born where she was a wolf pup who’s entire pack had been killed by a hunter then left for dead. Rave’s, pack had found her half dead and took her in as their own. That had been a summer and two seasons ago she hadn’t ever thought that she’d end up like she was now the last female of the pack and mated to the dead pack leader’s son.
Looking forward again as she caught a familiar scent she took a deep breath. Yes, it was there she could smell it very clear. Turning now towards her mate she gave a sharp yap. Her mate glanced her way for a second before turning to look at her slowing down at the same time to a slight jog. “Yes, Kara.” he asked taking a look at forward again to make sure that he wasn’t going to run into anything.
“Rave, I smell fresh water. May we stop for rest?” she asked breathing hard. They’d been running for quite a while now traveling much farther than they’d ever had before only taking breaks when they were just about to fall over with exhaustion. Her mate looked her over once before briefly nodding his head and turning to look ahead again.
“We’ll bed down there for the night. You need rest.” he stated picking up the pace as he caught the scent of water and turning in the direction that it was strongest.
As they came into a clearing where a large lake that was feed by a large river sat the sound of a human child’s cry reached the pair’s ears. Looking and sniffing for scents the pair noticed that there was no adult human anywhere. ‘Was the child abandoned?’ Kara, asked herself as she slowly and cautiously walked toward the direction that she could hear the cry from her mate following behind her curiously.
It was when they were within thirty paces of the water’s edge that they noticed a small moving bundle of cloth that was laying on a piece of drift wood that had washed ashore. Slowly Kara, made her way over to the bundle of cloth and nudged at it gently with her nose. An action that was responded to with a small animal-like whimper. Startled the she-wolf jerked her head up the tip of her nose catching the edge of the blanket and tossing the blanket open enough to see the head of a small human-like child inside.
At that instant the scent of the child ,which had been diluted by the wet blanket that covered it, reached her nose the child was female and she didn’t smell completely human she also smelled somewhat like one of her kind a....wolf. She glanced at her mate he too seemed curious as to what the child was. Stepping closer he caught the other edge of the blanket in his jaws and gave it a slight tug completely uncovering the child.
By now the child had stopped crying and was watching them with the same look. It was then that they noticed the differences between this child and the other humans that they’d come across. She was completely covered in a flush whitish tan fur, had small white claws that tipped both her fingers and toes, light sandy hair reached her chin, a small tail that was half her body length curled around her, and bronze colored eyes watched them curiously. The pair stared in shock. This child seemed to be some sort of cross between one of their own and a human.
The pair was pulled out of their shock when the child gave another whimper and reached up with two pudgy arms toward, Kara. The she-wolf looked down at the child for a second then back at her mate “Rave.....” she ask in an unspoken plea. She wanted to take the child in as her own.
Her mate looked at her sternly “Kara, you know we can’t. We don’t even know what she is. Let alone how at raise her.” he answered. He looked down at the child as she whimpered again and reached up toward his mate.
He watched as his mate slowly lowered her head toward the child giving the child a lick on the cheek earning a soft giggle from the child as it wrapped it’s tiny hands into his mate’s fur. “We can’t just leave her here, Rave. She’s not even old enough to defend herself she’ll be killed.” she argued as she licked the child’s other cheek earning another giggle of happiness. The child gave a small dog-like yawn and curled up into a small ball and falling into a dreamless sleep her hands still fisted in his mate’s fur but loosely. His mate gently removed herself from the child’s grasp, who whimpered at the loss, and looked up at her mate “Rave, Please....” she begged quietly as to not wake the child.
Her mate gave her another stern look “Don’t do this you know as well as I do that we know nothing of taking care of and raising a human child.” he growled trying to get his mate to see logic.
It didn’t work however his mate gave him another pleading look “Then we’ll raise her as a wolf. Besides does she look or smell like a normal human to you? Somehow she’s part wolf. ” she stated as if it was as simple as that. Her mate gave her another growl he didn’t have to say that he didn’t like the idea. He never had liked humans they were part of the reason that their pact wasn’t alive anymore after all.
Turning around sharply he headed back away from the water and toward the snow covered woods in search of a place to bed down for the night and more than likely longer “Do with it what you wish, but if it begins to slow us down then we leave it behind. Understood.” he growled turning around towards his mate. The only reason that he was allowing her to keep the child was because if he didn’t then it was likely that she’d come to hate him and possible leave him alone that and the fact that she was partially right maybe just maybe the child would survive living as a wolf. After seeing this strange wolf-child anything was possible.
His mate looked at him thankfully before turning back to the strange wolf-child. “Come little one lets go.” she whispered and gently picked up the sides and bottom edges of the blanket, the child balanced carefully inside, in her jaws and followed her mate. This child was the beginning of his and her new pack.
