Hoku Versus Sukura

The two collided in mid-air. Hoku's claws blocked Sukura's sword, causing yellow sparks to fly. She pushed Sukura back and leapt back herself.

"Not bad human." Hoku grinned as she flexed her claws. "But can you block this?"

Sukura held out her sword as Hoku leapt at her again. It let out a ring when Hoku's claws ricocheted off the blade. Sukura had a sudden fear that the sword would crack under such pressure. She pushed forward. A blast erupted from the blade.

Hoku dashed back. Her claws were smoking from the sudden burst of energy.

"What the hell was that?" she gasped.

"This sword was made from the hands of good." Sukura said as she held it out in front of her. "It will destroy your soul!"

"Not if I kill you and use it as a tooth pick!!!" Hoku growled as she leapt at Sukura.

Kitasato stood back and watched the fray. He tried desperately to come up with something to stop them. He didn't want this to end in death.

"Hell fire!!!"

A tree caught on fire as Sukura dodged the flaming attack. The blast threw her forward and she landed at a crouch with her back to the flames. Her neck began to sweat heavily. It was hard to see much in the black smoke.

"What's wrong human?" Hoku grinned as she stepped out of the flames. "Is the heat too intense for you?"

Sukura turned to see a huge white cat with black stripes and a long whip -like tail with two gold rings on the end crouching, ready to attack. This was Hoku's true form.

Sukura was angry. She didn't want to be toyed with. It was time to get serious. She poured all her energy into her sword. It began to glow brightly. In her mind was the vision of her father's slaughter. She would put all her energy into this attack and make the final blow.

Hoku let out a shriek. She was done playing too, and she lunged from the fire. Her long black claws began to ignite in blue flames as she aggressively approached Sukura.

Sukura waited for the moment, then, she swung the sword. It was difficult to see, but she knew that something was in her way.

"Kit!!"

Sukura stepped back. Her sword was back to normal. She didn't sheath it though.

Hoku transformed back into her spirit form. She stared horrified at the body of her friend.

"Kit..." she hissed. Her body began to feel hot. She was on fire with rage. "How could you do this...? Why? You've been nothing more than nice to me... and I never gave anything back..."

Sukura couldn't say anything. All she could do was sit there and watch, wondering what she'd done.

Hoku stood back up. Her eyes glinted with rage as she glared at Sukura. All the kindness she'd possibly learned with the one who she despised with all her heart, had drained away. He had sacrificed his life for her, and since there was no honor involved with his death, there wasn't any reason to hold back.

Sukura couldn't move. A panic had taken over her. She had made Hoku, the fearsome demon, angry. Now she realized why her master had wanted this demon to die.

"You've breathed your last you worthless witch!" Hoku roared as she raised her clawed hand.

"Don't... do it Hoku."

Hoku froze. Her hand still raised, she blinked and looked down at Kit's smiling face.

"Kit?"

Sukura gasped. She was freed from Hoku's spell and was able to move her body again.

"He... he's alive." she marveled. She then looked down at her sword. "I get it. Your friend has a good soul. The sword only kills evil."

"I could have told you that, idiot!" Hoku snapped. She then looked back down at Kit. "And you...!"

"I'm glad to see that you were worried about me." Kit smiled as he sat up.

Hoku backed away.

"What do you mean?" she frowned. "I wasn't."

"I may have looked like I was dead, but I could hear everything you said." Kitasato grinned.

"Are you two lovers?" Sukura asked blankly.

"Ugh!!" Hoku growled while pulling at her hair. "I'll kill you both!!!"

"Calm down my friend." Kitasato said as he grabbed Hoku by the shoulders. "I think that this whole little thing was a misunderstanding."

"Don't tell me that." Hoku pulled away. "She's the one who attacked me."

Sukura sheathed her sword. She had a feeling that she was safe for now.

"I have orders from the emperor to slay the cat." she said officially. "And to avenge my father."

"Do you think that Hoku was the one who killed him?" Kitasato asked.

Sukura nodded.

"I'd recognize those green eyes anywhere." she said trying to keep her temper down.

"How long ago was this?" Hoku asked. She didn't hold back her angry tone at all.

"A long time ago." Sukura replied. "When I was a girl."

"Idiot..." Hoku hissed. "I come from China. I haven't been here that long."

"Don't insult me!" Sukura snapped.

"Ladies..." Kit butted in. "Now come on. Can't we just get along?"

"No!" both girls shot.

"I think we should just kill him so we can carry on." Sukura said.

"Yeah." Hoku grinned. "That sounds like a good idea."

Kit backed up.

"Can we please end some of the violence!!" he cried.

"So..." Kitasato said. "You say the emperor sent you to kill Hoku."

"Yes." Sukura nodded.

Hoku folded her arms and huffed. She faced away from the two. She didn't like the idea of traveling with a human. It was all Kit's idea to bring Sukura along on their journey. She wanted no part of it.

It was night out. The trio was sitting around an outdoor fire. Well, Kit and Sukura were. Hoku sat in the shadows.

"I forgot to ask for your name." Kit said.

"Oh, it's Sukura, but everyone calls me Cricket."

"Cricket?" Hoku peered over her shoulder with a frown. "What the hell kind of nickname is that?"

"My father gave it to me." Sukura frowned.

"Come and join us." Kit said. "It's not that bad."

"Oh... it's not bad at all..." Hoku grumbled as she took her eyes of them. "I'm just stuck out in the woods with a human and a demon who thinks he's one... and he likes bugs mind you." She then let out a mock laugh. "The lord of the bugs and the Cricket.... you two can start your own army together."

"Is she always like this?" Sukura whispered to Kit.

"Oh... give her time." Kit nodded. "She get's worse sometime."

Hoku's ear twitched.

"What's that?"

"Are you a Zodiac?" Sukura asked Kit. "A normal demon can rarely hold a spirit form."

"No..." Kit blushed. "I'm just a fox. Hoku is a Zodiac though."

"No she can't be." Sukura frowned.

Hoku's ears stood up.

"The cat isn't part of the Zodiac." she heard Sukura say. "My father told me the story. The great Buddha decided to have a meeting to find out which animals will be Zodiacs. The rat and the cat were friends, and they promised to go together, but the rat broke his promise, and he went alone. The cat arrived late, and didn't make it into the group. That's the version I heard anyway."

"That's a lie." Hoku hissed. She stood up and peered down at them coldly. "That whole story. Only a true Zodiac knows what really happened."

"What did really happen?" Kit asked.

"Humph." Hoku turned. "Normal demons and humans wouldn't understand."

"Now where are you going?" Kit asked as Hoku disappeared into the shadows.

"For a walk." Hoku growled.

Kit sighed.

"I wonder what's gotten into her."

"I can't see why someone so kind as you hangs out with someone like her." Sukura said.

Kit smiled.

"I can.."
