Song of Kasumi
Makoto’s death scene
There Makoto lay upon the ground
priced cruelly by another's sword
Kasumi bent o’er the fall form
and wept as Makoto spoke
“Why does the world seem so cold and dark,
Kasumi? And why do you cry?”
Kasumi smiled, though it pained his heart
“Do not worry, my love, nor fear. Come
Let us leave this place with our minds,
and think of better things and happier times”
then he took Makoto’s head and sweetly,
Gently placed it upon his lap
“Remember when you were young
and you raced the rushing stream
Remember your mother’s song
as she weaves on her loom
Or your sister’s laughter
when she locked you in the coop”
Thus Kasumi spun his tale
to keep his friend's mind far away
He talked of all the jokes they’d played
Of all the trials they had won
And though he spoke lightly,
The pain in his heart just grew
As the young man’s breath grew labored
And his shining eye grew dark
Kasumi stroked his love’s hair
Caressed his perfect face and knew
The man he’d follow anywhere
Was traveling where he could not go
So Kasumi leaned o’er
And kissed sweet Makoto’s brow
“Sleep now my friend” he said
“Be at peace, have no more pain.
though your passing brings me sorrow,
my love for you will never dim.”
Kasumi’s Death Scene
He bends to kiss his friend upon the cheek
“Rise dear heart, the battle’s over and the war is done.
Now is the time for planting and singing,
“For rejoicing and kissing one’s new bride
Come your parents await their lost child”
Thus Makoto speaks as he takes Kasumi’s hand
And in the realm of life,
Which is but a passing dream
An old man sighs his last breath,
Lets go the hand that holds his tight
And as a one young man weeps,
And mourns his father’s death
Another young man smiles,
Then turns along the path
To lead the weary soldier,
His closest friend, his dearest love,
Home at last, where they
Can live and love, forever
