Chapter 1 A Different Kind of Love Story
It was dark that day…The clouds were gray and gloomy as the blocked out the warm bright rays of the sun. Okibi walked in small, slow and steady steps. Her foot steps echoed off the old dirty brick walls that held up nothing but abandoned places…Okibi shook her head in disgust…They must have cleared this part of Spirit City weeks ago. Them being the gang of Vampires ran by Akuma. Okibi clenched her fist at the very thought of Akuma. Her purple eyes ran along the sidewalk trying to find something that could lead her in the tracking of the vampire gang. Reaching a hand up she ran her fingers through her sandy colored hair she had inherited from her mother.
Okibi stopped in her tracks and looked to her left…She stared at a blank window that sat in front of an empty store…More like she was staring at the pitiful reflection. Sandy hair, that's the only thing she had that could remind her of her mother. Tears pricked the corner of her eyes but she held them back, determined to look stronger than how she felt. Taking the sleeve of her coat she dabbed at her eyes and the fresh memory of her mother came flooding back to her in perfect focus. She couldn't help but notice how the empty torn up street reminded her somewhat of her life…Long and empty. Never once had she made friends, never once had she been in love. Okibi saw her self as a pathetic person only bent on killing evil. At least she would be helping the city out, even if they weren't her friends… Looking up and down at her self she was reminded as to why she was even fighting in the first place.
~Flash Back~
“Mommy it was wonderful!” A younger Okibi exclaimed as she turned in a circle while walking. Her mother looked down at her with her icy blue eyes smiling warmly.
“I'm glad you had fun at the Winter Festival.” Her mother said. Okibi shook her head happily.
“Oh yes! Lots! Can we go back again next year?” She asked tilting her small head to the side making her pig tails lopsided.
Her mother giggled at Okibi's enthusiasm for it. “Of course we can dear.” Her mother answered patting her on the head. Okibi's face lit up with happiness. She was one of those happy children who always smiled and everyone loved her…Until that day.
“Oh yay!” Okibi exclaimed jumping up and down happily until she heard the screeching sounds of cars stopping and a heavy force pressing her closer to the ground. There was a jolt of energy on her and Okibi opened her eyes the blue in them turning a deep shade of purple as she looked around for her mother.
“Mommy! Mommy!” She called till her eyes landed on her mothers mangled body on the ground on top of shattered glass and broken car parts. Okibi tried to get up but no luck she was still being forced to the ground. Looking over her shoulder she saw a power line on top of her. Trying to move again she hit a wire causing a complete wave of electricity to flow throughout her body. She screamed for what seemed an eternity before her world went black.
~*~ Some years later~*~
“Look at her! She's too quiet!” One boy said pointing his stubby little fingers in Okibi's direction. Okibi sat against the old oak tree out by the school, her arms crossed resting on her knees as she awaited recess to be over.
“I say we make her talk!” Another boy said stuffing a piece of cookie in to his mouth.
“Yeah!” the small group of boys agreed. They marched over to Okibi and yanked her up by the hair.
“Ow! Hey! Leave me alone!” She whined as they pulled her over to the small sandbox shoving her face in it. Okibi coughed and sneezed and cried from all the sand in her eye. The group of boys busted out in to fits of laughter. Okibi stood up wiping at her face before shaking slightly as her hand curled in to a fist.
“I said leave me alone!” She screamed raising her fist in the air not thinking as out of nowhere, a bolt of lightning crashed down electrifying only the small group.
As soon as the lightning had come, it had gone. Okibi stared in wonder at her small clenched fist. `W…What did I do?' she thought as the back door to the school building was slammed open as the teacher came running outside.
“What in gods name happened her Okibi?” Mrs. Kinamoto asked the little girl. She had watched the entire thing from the school.
“I don't know!” Okibi shouted…she was so shocked.
“Like hell you do! Get out of this school!” Mrs. Kinamoto demanded as she raged on and on stomping her feet while dragging Okibi out of the school gates and tossing her in to the road.
~Some more years later~
“Get out of the city! Go some where for freaks!” An angry mob of people demanded as they shot at Okibi running her out of the town of `Yoridoka'. Okibi ran for it through the rough rains of the season. Tears leaked down her cheeks as the people she once knew ran her out of town for her own gifts.
So she ran….Far away to a new city…Spirit City was full of freaks. Everyone knew that. From Vampire gangs to Jack the Ripper fan clubs. If it was out of the ordinary, it would be in Spirit City.
This was around the time when Okibi ran into her worst enemy. Being alone in this city was not a good idea. She had just started to turn the corner when the ear piercing scream of a small child hit her ears. Breaking out in to an all out run she ran for the screams deciding it was time to put her powers to use. Coming to a deserted ally-way she saw three people gathered around the small screaming child. A woman with long red hair that was swept up behind her in a pony tail was bent over the child, large fangs elongated poking out between her ruby red lips. Two men stood behind her dressed in the same leather apparel, one had short jet black hair while the other one had curly brown hair that was styled off to the side.
“Hey! Hey you! Get away from that kid!” Okibi screamed pointing one her fingers at the woman vampire.
The woman looked up before sighing. She let the child go for a second before one of the men picked up the kid scaring it with his fangs.
Within a spilt-second, Okibi was staring in to the green eyes of a vampire.
“And just who do you think you are?” The vampire asked.
“I'm Okibi! Now, leave the girl alone!” Okibi said bravely.
“Very well, Okibi…My name is Akuma. I am the widow of the great Zeal, now if you want to stop me from killing this little girl speak now or forever hold your peace. At least till its your turn to die.” Akuma stated slyly turning back to her two henchman.
“Kiyo! Saruno! Where'd the child go?” Akuma asked tapping her leather booted foot on the moist tar of the road.
“Damn thing bit me!” Kiyo stated. He was the one with the brown hair Okibi made a mental note of this.
“Well, then we can just eat her.” Akuma said not even looking behind her.
“Who?” Saruno asked peering behind his mistress. Akuma raised a thin eyebrow before turning to look behind her. Okibi had run for it. Akuma clenched her fists and punched the brick wall that rested next to her.
“That human is going to cause us problems!”
~End of Flashbacks~
Okibi shook her head and held it up high as she continued to walk down the deserted neighborhood, something above her caught her attention. Out of the corner of her eye she could have sworn she had seen a woman standing on a fire escape wearing traditional clothing. Not wanting to see if her assumption was correct, Okibi continued walking, minding her own business. It was hard at first for her to ignore the woman, she knew that the woman was following her but she couldn't sense that demonic aura that vampires and werewolves gave off. She shrugged it off and continued walking. Looking for any signs of life.
Akuma twisted a red loch of her hair around her finger as she yawned. She was bored and hungry waiting on Kiyo to return from hunting. Hopefully he would bring home some young fresh blood, nothing over the age of forty. Standing next to her was Saruno, he stood at perfect attention eyes straight forward and his hands at his side.
“Tell me Saruno…How many more humans are left in Spirit City?” Akuma asked wanting to know how many more she had to kill to return her lover back from the dead.
“Well my mistress, We have cleared the Northern part of city and parts of the East. We still have a couple thousand more to go before Lord Zeal can be re-awoken.” Saruno said sternly. Akuma sighed and made a pouty face. So far she had killed thousands and turned hundreds in to her vamperic slaves to serve in her army. However she still loved her to side men that were held high in her ruling, Kiyo and Saruno were almost her equal, almost.
The double doors to the warehouse slide open and closed again as a bloody Kiyo walked in empty handed. When he walked directly in front of Akuma he slid to one knee.
“ Sorry my mistress, but the entire northern land is clear of human…We must move east now so we can feed.” Kiyo stated not wanting to look Akuma directly in the eyes.
“Very well, East it is, come now.” Akuma stated strutting out of her chair and out of the warehouse. She was hungry and tired of waiting.
“We feed now, move later.” She commanded as Kiyo and Saruno stood on either side of her as they sped off towards the eastern half of the city.
While running, Akuma was brought back to the whole reason why all the humans in this city had to die. `All for Zeal.' She mentally chanted.
~Flash Back~
Akuma was only a little girl when she had first met Zeal. He was feared throughout the land and held so much power. She feared him being a small human girl. However life went on in the Western part of Spirit City. She did her chores daily and still went to school. However one stormy night she was sitting next to the fire with her younger siblings and her mother and father in chairs beside them. Akuma had her nose buried in a book she found fascinating, it wasn't until later when the screams in the next apartment were heard. Looking alarmed her parents ran to the door to bolt it closed but it was too late.
Zeal and his followers busted down the door walking in, their stomachs wanting fresh young blood. His dark onyx eyes landed on the young Akuma who was fifteen at the time. He smiled at her showing his fangs before wrenching her up off the ground by her forearm. He turned his attention to the silently cry family in front of him.
“In exchange for your lives I'm taking her…No worries, I'll just bite her…She has this certain dark aura to her I see fascinating.” He didn't wait for any objections or anything before he followed out dragging along Akuma as he yelled for his men to retreat.
It was only years later that Akuma, now a full blown vampire, was in love with the almighty Zeal. Her past human life nothing but a blur to her now, she loved life as a vampire…Zeal had gone into a resting stage as do all leaders of the Vampire gang. Akuma knelt over his sleeping form that was preserved in side a glass coffin. This would be his last year asleep and then he would awaken and marry her. She pressed her fingers to the glass wanting to touch him. She merely gazed at him till her eyes grew heavy and she fell asleep right there leaned over the glass coffin.
She had only been asleep a few hours or so before the tarnished screams of the other vampires hit her ears. Clanging noises were heard coming closer to the room full of sleeping leaders. Akuma bit her bottom lip. The holy knights had come finally, they had found out the vampires hiding place. She backed up away from Zeal and hid around a corner concealed in the darkness.
“We found them!” One man said dressed in his knight armor. Two other knights filed in taking out their stakes as the slid the lids to the coffins open and stabbed each leader. Akuma's eyes widened when they got over to her beloved Zeal. As soon as they raised the stake above his body she screamed revealing her self to the knights.
“No! Get away from him!” She shouted. One knight quickly stabbed Zeal and then turned to her drawing out a new stake.
“Back you monster!” He shouted running after her. Akuma fearing for her life at this point fled the scene unharmed. The only survivors of the attack….Herself and Kiyo.
From that day on she vowed to bring him back. Finding out the only way to ressurect him from the gypsy was to kill every human in Spirit City and to pour the blood of the last human she kills on to Zeal's body.
Akuma agreed and therefore started the war in Spirit City.
~End of Flash Back~
“Damn, I'm hungry! I'm so hungry I could drink three people!” Kiyo explained as the trio traveled to the eastern side of town.
“Oh can it!” Saruno stated coldly. Kiyo threw a death glare over at Saruno and Saruno returned it full of daggers. Akuma rolled her green eyes. Those two always were fighting.
Akuma skidded to a stop. Her nose twitched a bit as she could smell the fresh warm blood of someone approaching. She hushed Kiyo and Saruno and had them follow her over the hillside of the east. Akuma's eyes narrowed but she grinned.
“Hey isn't that, that girl you hate?” Kiyo asked pointing to Okibi walking up the hill not noticing the three vampires looking down at her.
“She's mine!” Akuma hissed charging down the hill and tackling Okibi down to the dirty ground.
“Ahh!” Okibi screamed completely taken by surprise. She could feel Akuma's strong grip on her as her head was tilted back. Okibi struggled but two more sets of hands were holding her down. Feeling the warm breath of Akuma on her neck Okibi got an idea. Closing her purple eyes she concentrated.
“Aww fuck what's wrong with her! Her skin feels like fire!” Saruno gasped as he let go, Kiyo let go as well. Akuma hissed in pain feeling burns appearing on her hands. She dropped Okibi's neck backing away.
“What are you! You smell human!” Akuma stated stomping her foot.
“I'm not someone you want to mess around with!” Okibi stated as her purple eyes kicked up a storm. The gloomy clouds above them all began to swirl and rain drops began to fall.
“Heh, so you're an elementist….At least you'll put up a damned good fight when I get to kill you!” Akuma huffed. Okibi stood up shaken slightly from the attack. There was a pause of silence between them as death glares were shot. That's when foot steps were heard approaching. Okibi looked off to the side at the woman she had seen on the fire escape before.
“Why hello again Akuma, fancy meeting you here the woman stated. Okibi stared at the girl dressed traditionally, her dark blue pants and white blouse, her long ebony hair let loose.
“You again! You're a little pest! Just like her!” Akuma stated pointing to Okibi.
“Saruno come back to me…” she stated.
Okibi looked from the vampires to the girl and back again.
“Look Kya, face it…He'll never come back to you…That is even if he can remember you!” Akuma taunted her. Kya's expression grew angry.
“I blame you!” She screamed pulling out her sword that rested at her side. She pointed it in Akuma's direction.
“Blame me! Everyone already does!” Akuma smirked as she ran one of her claws across Saruno's cheek. Kya's grip tightened on her sword as she rushed forward to hit Akuma. Saruno stepped in front of the attack. Kya quickly moved the sword down to her side so as not to stab her once lover. She stopped face to face with him. He stared directly in her blue eyes before one of his hands hit her wrist cause her to drop her sword and his other hands connected with her face backhanding her with his claws. Kya fell back with a cry, three streaks of crimson on her face. Akuma laughed and then vanished.
Okibi hesitated before walking over and kneeling down beside the fallen Kya.
“Are you okay?” Okibi asked helping her up. Kya stood up straight determined to look stronger than she felt.
“Never better…”She murmured picking up her sword and sheathing it at her side.
“If you don't mind, can I ask why your against them?” Okibi asked curiously.
“That man, Saruno, with the dark hair and blue eyes. We come from the same city, Kyoto. I loved him…and from what I understood at that time…He loved me, then Akuma came to town looking for the gypsy who tells all. She decided to rampage through my city and when she came upon Saruno….Bit him, cursing him to be an undead. He forgot me…and left me…” That's all she gave out for now. Okibi looked a bit crossed.
“If its any of my business, I would give up on him…” Okibi stated. Kya looked up at her eyes widening.
“Never!” Kya stated.
“I mean, he won't remember you and he can't come back to being human!” Okibi said quickly as not to anger Kya anymore.
“Even so…I want to see him rest then, not be a monster. I'm going to give him the peace he deserves…It's the most I can do for him…I gave up on him a long time ago…I'm making it my job to put him to rest.” Kya stated dusting off her kimono.
“I see…” Okibi stated before turning to walk off again.
“Wait!” Kya stated stopping Okibi in her tracks.
“Yes?”
“Can I join you please? I mean we can make a great team against them…” Kya said.
Okibi thought a moment. “I don't mind it's just…I've never had a friend before and I might be of no use to you…”
“Never had a friend before….well, I'll be number one then and don't make it sound like I'm going to use you anyway…”Kya stated. Okibi looked up at her and saw Kya's smile. She couldn't help but smile back and nod.
“Okay then! Together we make a team! Okibi and Kya…” Okibi stated thrusting her fist in the air.
“Yeah! Akuma's going down!” Kya laughed, and that's how the night went for them.
“Damn them!” Akuma stated. She was full of blood now as was Kiyo and Saruno.
“Sorry Mistress, but now that we know their power we can get them next time…” Saruno stated with a nodding Kiyo next to him.
“We better…”
