Chapter one. Alive Again.

Some adults think little of the quiet children. They see them as small, vacuous beings with no purpose. Living with these false assumptions for so long would eventually bother anyone. The silent ones, in fact, are the deepest, most complicated of all. Degrading them would ultimately exasperate them. Then they could be more deadly and more terrifying than any others, but they choose not to be. It is the silent ones that appear to have the most problems, constantly having their minds flooded with thoughts. Unfortunately, by the time the dull, normal people noticed, it was usually too late; too late to stop the silence of the "innocent" quiet ones, too late to escape or change their intentions. Most would eventually crack, and well, who could blame them?

I guess you could say that the quiet ones stay dormant until their emotions overwhelm them completely. Then, usually, anger and hatred take over. Most people find it surprising, while others are only disappointed. Yet no one understands silence. Someone once said that, "Silence is golden." but is that so? Could silence be the main thing that haunts the horrid race of humans; what drives them mad? None know, and none shall for a very long time. Until then, people will hate, love, betray, continue to be humans and no one can stop them, except, perhaps, the quiet breed. You may not recognize them though, they only stay quiet for so long, and then they speak, with hatred.

Wisconsin. January.

A teenage girl walked from the fire. Her eyes held their own amber flame ten times brighter and ten times fiercer then the massive conflagration behind her. She was pale, part of her face black with soot. Her left arm hung limp at her side. There was a profound gash in her shoulder. Her right hand was placed over her heart, which appeared to hemorrhage. Her lips were deep crimson and looked exactly like blood. The smile those luscious lips formed was poignant, vacant, and horrifying. An aura of death seemed to form around her. Lengthy, straight, jet-black hair hung about her face. Her eyes were such a deep, foreboding, blue, they seemed pitch black, just as the night sky. They, too, just as the heavens, were filled with angry fire that burned with furiously murderous passion.

The ambulances could be heard. They would arrive first, then the fire trucks, and after that, the police. They were too late though. The two bodies burning in the blaze were immediately seeped of life when the engine exploded. A painless death, sudden and unexpected, they could've had a much worse demise. It, however, wasn't necessary. A few cars had stopped and were looking at the wreck, concerned. One man ran to the young girl and offered assistance. She sadistically pushed him away and disappeared into the forest on the other side of the flames. A few people ran after her, but she appeared to have vanished completely.

The police, firemen, and the ambulance arrived moments later. They were far too late for the two people turning to ashes in their fiery little hell of flames. The fire was put out and the bodies were taken to the hospital to be identified. After some smoke cleared, the police interrogated some of the spectators who had witnessed the tragic accident. Search dogs almost instantly appeared everywhere, searching for the girl who departed without a word. No trace of her was found, not a drop of blood or a single footprint anywhere. The forest there was still a mass of sticks in a blizzard of pure white, but it now seemed quite desolate and empty. The soul of the woods was sucked away the moment she stepped into it and disappeared.

The bodies, or what was left of them, were identified almost immediately. They were Mr. And Mrs. Waters. The young girl who vanished was Crystal Waters, age sixteen. Police took what was left of the car and were currently inspecting it, trying to find the cause of the accident. Apparently, Mr. Waters had been driving when the engine exploded. The Waters were a very affluent family. Crystal was now the owner of quite a large fortune that needed someone to care for it. That only made it more important for her to be discovered. Police widened their search. Weeks passed, but the girl could not be found anywhere.

Texas. March.

An old farmer walked through his pasture. A light frost covered the lifeless grass. Winter was lasting longer than anticipated this year. A few cows mooed as he sauntered by. There was something red near the fence. H first perceived it earlier in the morning and he was curious and anxious to see what the crimson color came from. He gasped as he got near.

"A young girl.." He barely dared to breathe. What was a teenager doing out here in this remote nothingness? He had to see if she was alive or not. The elderly man gingerly reached for one of her wrists. Her skin was warm and she had a strong, steady heartbeat. The old farmer sighed with relief and looked at her face. She was a very attractive young lady, her clothes looked burnt in a few places and there was dry blood all over her shirt, which was black. Her pants were a deep crimson and they were what had pulled him from the warmth of his home out here to save this mysterious beauty. He shook her lightly, she didn't respond.

"MATT!!!" he bellowed for his son, who came running. Matt was about to ask what was wrong when he saw the girl. Seeing her lying there stole the words from his lips and trapped him in temporary silence.

"I saw something red this morning and decided to come see what it was, and I found her. She'll freeze if we leave her out here much longer. Help me bring her into the house and we'll call an ambulance." The old man said calmly. Matt nodded and picked up the girl's delicate body as if she weighed nothing. They took her to the house and immediately phoned the hospital as well as the local sheriff.

Matt hovered over her, hypnotized by the mere sight of someone so beautiful and terrifying. She seemed inhuman. The young girl's lips were blue and her skin was pale and cold, yet it glowed with radiant life and exquisiteness. Her clothes were torn and worn. Matt brushed some hair from her face with cautious fingers. It was a bit untidy, but the raven locks were soft and silky.

Crystal opened her eyes halfway and looked up at Matt. He jumped back, surprised. The girl, Crystal, tried to get up, but immediately moaned out in pain and collapsed back on the couch, closing her eyes once more. Matt stood in shock. Those eyes. Those were demon eyes. Or could it be angel? Such eyes had never been seen before in that small Texas town.

"Ar-are you alright? What's your name? How'd you get here..? Where.. " Matt stopped his questions when Crystal looked at him again, this time her multifaceted eyes filled with quite a bit of sorrow.

"I am Crystal.. that is all you need to discern." She closed her mystifying orbs once more and covered the lids with one of her hands.

The ambulance arrived then and carried her off before Matt even registered the fact that she had spoken. Even her voice seeped him from his thoughts and numbed his mind.

The police stayed a while and questioned Matt and his father. Before they left, they informed them both that the young girl was Crystal Waters, a victim in a car crash about a month before. They had no idea what happened during the month she was missing or why she ended up here. The cops left after completing their paperwork. They thanked Matt and his father as they walked out.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, the young girl practically instantly identified as Crystal Waters, was taken to intensive care. The doctors couldn't find anything wrong with her, and despite their meticulous efforts, she wouldn't wake. After a few days of studying her, she disappeared. One morning her doctors and nurses were discovered dead, and Crystal, well, she was nowhere to be seen. The main physician had been stabbed in the back several times, and the other doctors and nurses' bodies just appeared as if they dropped dead suddenly for no apparent reason whatsoever. Oddly, no one even considered Crystal a suspect, but saw her as a victim, supposedly kidnapped by the murderer. They never thought, even for a moment, that she would do such a thing.
