GOING HOME AGAIN
Two weeks later Ian announced to me that it was time I return home. I told him I would rather stay here because I was almost done with my training, but he wouldn't here of it. He told me that my parents would think I was dead if I didn't go home soon. For the first time since I got there I thought about my family, and I began to get home sick, so I agreed to go.
Around noon Ian came in my room and announced that we had to leave early. Fifteen minutes later we were both packed and ready to go. We each had our own ship this time so I would have a way to get back when I was needed.
"It will take about two days to get to earth", said Ian, as we left the Sierra.
As the Sierra became smaller I began to think about my time there. I had a few uneventful trips to Boton. Uneventful, was I word I had learned to like. It was uncommon for things to be uneventful on the Sierra. I remembered an alien named Drat who had helped me learn how to land on Boton. He was about seven feet tall, had green eyes, and reddish skin accompanied by four arms.
About half way through our trip Ian was told to come straight back, although he was not told why he had to leave, he left. As he left I thought about where he might live, when he visited home, and does he have a home? He had never talked about his home before. I had only spoken of mine a few times because it seemed to upset him some. I had never asked why.
Earth slowly came into view and my thoughts returned to home. How was I going to tell my mom and dad? How was I going to explain this to the police? I thought about turning around, but the thought of Ian being upset with me not going home made me keep going. I decided it would be safe if I orbited Earth for a day and E-mailed my mom and dad for a while and then decided if I was going to go home or not. (Yes E-mail is possible up there, and I could have E-mailed them from Mars).
My E-mail went like this:
Mom and Dad:
It's Amber. I'm ok. I will be coming home soon. Please don't call the police. I was not kidnapped. I have so much to tell you I don't know where to start. I don't think an e-mail is a great way to explain so I will have to talk with you when I get there.
Please don't be angry.
Amber E-mail me back at 5482. Your computer will send it.
I agree it wasn't all that great and I realize now it was stupid of me to do so. I should have never told them I was coming.
I received a reply in an hour. My mother was frantic to know where I was. My dad was also concerned and asked where I was. I did not reply and just decided to turn up at home in the morning.
The sun was just appearing over the horizon as I began to descend. It would be bright enough so that no one would see my fire-tail, but early enough that not too many people would be awake to see me land. A special coating on the ship protects me from the "primitive" radar that we have on earth. As my home came in to view I noticed a strange car in my driveway. Most likely my parents had called the police after my letter. I could not land in my backyard as planned, but in the forest behind my house, I could not let the police see the ship. It would be more difficult now that I would have to maneuver between trees. Now landing be slow and possibly noisy, but I really had no choice.
I had not noticed it before, but I was still wearing my uniform. It would now be very strange to go home not in my cloths that I left in. after landing I covered the ship in branches and dead leaves till it was barely visible. Then I set off toward home. It would be only a five-minute walk, but it felt like an eternity.
The end of the path came into view and I almost turned back to leave feeling as if I had left my home instead of going to it. I turned off the path and into my yard. It needs to be mowed its half way up to my nee, I thought as I walked toward my house. I could see into the bay window in the living room and saw someone sitting in a chair. My parents were on the couch that was almost totally blocked from view. From the direction I was coming they could not see me, but if the man turned to his side he would. My heart was racing as I came closer to my house; I felt nervous, scared, and excited all at once. I wished Ian were with me.
I looked at the ground hopping that would make it easier for me, but while I was looking down the man must have turned and saw me because a moment later both my parents were standing on the deck in shock that I was there. I dropped the bag and heard a small crunch; I knew at once I had broken my portable communicator. I hoped not beyond the repair that I could do. For a moment I went to see if I could fix it but stopped as my mother through her arms around me knocking me down damaging the communicator more. After about ten minutes or so I was released by my mother and father's embrace. I picked up my bag and as I walked up the stairs to the deck I took out my communicator out. Only the screen was smashed and a small crack in the side had become a bit larger. I was extremely nervous and now felt that I was going to be sick. The officer's had directed me towards the couch but I turned sharply the other direction a locked my self in the bathroom. If I was going to be sick I wasn't going to do it in front of everybody. I heard my parents asking the officer to let me stay home and rest but he seemed set on taking me back to the station to question me.
I couldn't think of what to do next so I took out a kit to fix my communicator. I replaced the screen and put some glass-glue in the crack so that it wouldn't get even larger. My parents were now at the door asking me to come out and talk.
"Please just go away." I said.
They left me and began to talk in the living room again. I was not tired but I didn't know what else to do. Locking the door I lay down hoping to fall asleep and give all this a chance to settle in. I woke up about an hour later to someone trying to pick the lock on the door. Still very sleepy and forgetting where I was I told Ian to go away. The noise stopped and realizing what I just said I apologized and unlocked the door. I was ready to talk.
Just as I sat on the couch a loud buzzing noise came from the communicator. The police officer with the nametag, Kurt, blocked the way to the bathroom. I had to answer it in front of them.
"Five four eight two." I said into the communicator.
"Don't need to sound so serious you know." It was Ian, "Just checking in on you. You talked to your parents right?"
"If you could have just waited five minutes," and before I could finish my sentence Ian replied, "Oh, sorry."
A faint beep indicated that he had ended the connection to let me speak with my parents. I wished he hadn't gone after I saw the look on my parent's faces. They were all silent as I told them about, well, everything. Even Mr. Kurt didn't know what to say. Ian's interruption was enough proof for them all.
"Mr. Kurt, your not going to report this are you?" I asked when I was through and had given them a few minutes to recover.
"Well, I guess not." He said rather shakily, "Who would believe it anyway."
Mr. Kurt left the house to close his report about my disappearance and my mom started to fix lunch. I knew she was stressed because she cooked when she was stressed. My dad sat on the couch and watched me type into the communicator. I didn't think I wanted my parents to hear my conversation with Ian. I told him all that happened and he told me why he had to go back. The Sierra had seen many unidentified ships and wanted him to come back in chance that they would attack.
The next morning I lay in bed thinking about the day before and wondering how I made it through it all. My sister took all the news quite well and wanted to see my ship as soon as possible. I planned to take her to see it later in the day. For breakfast my mom had made pancakes, nothing ever tasted so good. After my sister was dressed I took her out into the woods to see my ship.
She wanted to know what everything was and how it worked. I managed to get a hold of a child on the Sierra and they talked for at least an hour about life on a spaceship, and about life on Earth. We finally made our way back home when are stomachs said it was time for lunch. As I turned off the trail toward home I saw something I never expected.
