The Awakening Part VI
***************************************************************** ****
The time visiting hours ended was coming near. Where am I supposed to go when time runs out? I don't want to leave my friends to these monsters. I think I'll go visit Josh again, it's been awhile since we've been alone…well Jake's there too, but being in a coma doesn't really count, does it? While Sarah contemplated this, she got up from the waiting room and started slowly walking toward the section marked QUARANTINE.
As Sarah walked in the room she saw Josh sitting up in his bed, looking at his hand with the red mark on it. “Josh? Are you okay?” Sarah asked.
He looked up surprised. “Sarah….yeah I'm fine. Come here,” he said as he spread his arms. She ran over and embraced him. He scooted over to allow her to be able to sit on the hospital bed next to him.
As she sat next to him, he kissed her forehead. “Thanks for saving me Josh. I don't know what I'd do without you.”
“It's okay Sarah. I'll always be there for you,” and with that he leaned down and kissed her. She was in shock for a few moments, and was about to respond when he pulled away.
When he looked at her again she was in a daze. “So was that the only reason you came to visit me or was there something else you wanted to talk about?” Josh replied as he smiled down at her.
Just as she opened her mouth, a man came in pulling a mop and bucket. He was wearing a single colored uniform that had a patch on it that said `Jim'. “Sorry, was I interrupting something? I got a call about a spilled soda, and it's not gonna clean itself up,” Jim said kindly, as he got to work on the now sticky spill.
When Josh was going to respond, Sarah cut him off, “No, I was just leaving. It's late and I still have to find a place to sleep tonight.” As she was getting up she noticed Josh's downcast expression.
She leaned in whispered, “I'll be back later.” He perked up as her lips touched his cheek before she pulled away completely and walked towards the door.
Josh then murmured that a certain old man had perfect timing. Jim finally finished and walked out the door. As he was walking down the hallway he saw the young lady who had been in the room he just cleaned.
“Hey there miss, were you saying that you needed a place to stay?” Jim started conversation as they walked side-by-side. “Yeah,” she replied, “I was actually a patient until this morning. We were all unconscious when we came here, I don't know where we are, let alone how to get home. Even if I did, I couldn't leave my friends with these monsters. I'm probably gonna just pull up a chair in the waiting room and fall asleep there, that's if they'll let me.” As her expression turned sour, Jim felt a pulling at his heart.
“Hey, I think I could help with that.” At this her face lit up. “Before I had a place to stay so I could work here, I used to have a closed off spot on the roof. It wasn't very big, but it was warm and got the job done. If you wanted, you could stay there.” Sarah turned to him with a huge smile on her face and hugged him hard. “Thank you thank you thank you!”
“No problem,” Jim said with a smile of his own, “Come with me, the stairs up to the roof are down this hallway.” He pointed right as they were coming up on it. They went up way too many steps for Sarah's liking. Near the top she realized how tired she really was.
When they finally reached the roof, Sarah shivered. Well, it is the middle of winter after all. What did you expect? You don't even have a jacket. When Jim stopped, Sarah looked at what seemed to be a small hut on top of the roof to this wacky hospital.
As Jim opened the hut's door and stepped inside. “Well it doesn't look like much, but it's warm and keeps the elements out,” he said as Sarah stepped in. And surprising as it was, Sarah felt much warmer inside. “Thanks Jim,” she flashed a big smile at him.
He gave her a fatherly look, “No problem kid. Now, don't stay up too late, and keep out of sight. You don't want any of the staff to see you up here.” And with that said he gave her a pat on the shoulder and shut the door, walking back over to the stairs.
Sarah sighed and sat down on the small cot in the hut, “This day is getting weirder and weirder.” She sighed again and turned over, falling asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the sun's rays peaked over the roof top, Sarah woke up.
She stood up, getting the kinks out from sleeping in one place for too long. Rubbing her eyes, she opened the door and started for the stairs.
The scene she found in the quarantine's waiting room was pure chaos. Doctors and nurses were running in every direction. “- monitor broke again -”, “- get some more -”, “why is everything breaking?”, “- need a new IV -” were the bits of sound she could decipher amidst a bunch of white noise made from the confusion.
She stopped a passing by doctor, “What's going on?”
“A lot of the machinery around your friend is going off line. The IV bags are exploding,” he gave her a wink; “I think she's waking up, if any of the crazy stuff that's happened in the past few weeks has anything to say about it. Come with me.”
Sarah followed him to the room where Emily and Katie were staying. As she walked in Sarah saw some nurses surrounding Katie, trying to hook up some machinery. “Guys, come on. Leave her alone, those will just break again anyway. Let's give her some privacy with her friend.” the doctor said as he walked further into the room.
The nurses looked nervously at him. He sighed, “Do you want to have to explain to the boss why all of the machinery is broken? I don't think so, come on.”
Sarah walked over to the bed as the nurses filed out. Katie looked no worse for wear, except, Sarah noticed, the left part of her face was bandaged up. She turned to the doctor, who was still in the room, a questioning look in her eyes, “Why is her red mark bandaged when no one else's is?”
“Well, around 5 this morning, the burn started to glow a silvery color. That's when the first IV broke. We covered it up because it appeared to disrupt the heart monitors in the nearby vicinity. I think they'll let you take it off when she calms down,” the doctor said as he walked calmly out the door, shutting it behind him, leaving the troubled 15 year old alone with her thoughts.
Sarah walked over to Katie's bedside, sparing a concerned glance in Emily's direction. She really wished Emily was awake; she needed advice on what to do. Emily's logic gave her an even ground to stand on whenever Sarah started stressing over something.
Sarah sat down on a stool next to the hospital bed holding her friend. Sarah seemed probably closest to Katie out of all her female friends. After all, not only was Katie her tennis partner, they were also the two youngest in the bunch; both barely 15 amongst 16 and 17 year olds.
Deep in thought, Sarah looked at what everyone seemed so preoccupied. The IV chord connected to Katie's arm had snapped. Wait, if the tube snapped, why isn't the floor wet? Sarah then noticed the needle from the IV tube on the floor. Curiously, she picked it up, noticing it was in 2 pieces. “That's odd. Well, Katie'll be happy about that, seeing as she hates needles,” Sarah said to her self, shuddering as she remember what had happened the last time Katie was forced to get a shot. That wasn't pretty. Sarah shuddered again as she looked up to come face with the bandages again. He said something about a silvery glow. Hmm...I wonder if that has something to do with the chemicals.
With that, Sarah started to unwrap the bandages around Katie's head.
She gasped at what she saw; the red mark was now bright silver and was forming into a series of interconnecting lines. Like some tribal mark. I wonder what it means.
Just then Katie opened her grey eyes to a pair of surprised hazel ones.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Katie woke up to one hell of a head ache. Oww......I feel like I got hit by a truck. The light that sneaked through her eyelids made her want to kill Edison for inventing the stupid light bulb. Fuck that hurts. Alright, if I gotta open up and face the world with a scowl sometime, might as well be now.
As she opened her eyes she noticed Sarah staring at her, a little to close for comfort. “…You want something?”
“Katie!!! You're up,” Sarah said with an air of amazement. Katie gave her a dry look. “I noticed.” What she didn't expect was a crying Sarah hugging her. Crap...what did I do now? “Sarah? What's wrong?”
Sarah looked up at her, tears running down her face, “They didn't think you were gonna make it. They said you, Jake, and Emily couldn't make it. But here you are, and that means they can be okay too.” This is awkward, I hate when people cry.........wait, WHAT?!?!?
“What the fuck do you mean not gonna fucking make it??!!?!??!!?!?!?!? What do you mean Jake and Emily couldn't make it?!??!?!?”
Sorry for the long update, so I made this much longer. CHAP 6!!!! If you're still reading this please review so we can know what you think about this to see if it's even worth writing it anymore -dudekiller
Way too out of it to think of a response... dudekiller, you really need to go to grammar 101. That whole thing with the question marks was NOT my fault. I blame most of it on Word, and the rest on dudekiller. Honestly, checking the chapter before you post it might help. So...review. Honestly, I wish school was never invented... Exams are coming up too... *sigh...must study but too lazy* I wonder who can guess who's who... (characters to authors-only 3 characters are authors though *says for retards* (Honestly, how can three people be ten?)) Yeah...review. -DarkerImage
Dudekiller: Hey don't go blaming it on me. I expected you to have everything already fixed. So shoot me if I'm lazy. And on the whole grammar thing: In my profile it says that I suck at both grammar & spelling.
Sorry for the wait guys (dudekiller:*whistles innocently*) someone *gives dudekiller look that melts stone* wouldn't write. But we can all get these out faster and push dudekiller to work harder if u all review -Condayen
Dudekiller: *winces* alright already, I get it. I'll write faster, I just didn't know what to write.
