Prologue pt.2: Roof top conflict

The rooftop was a severe contrast to the state of the rest of the Tower. Well, that was until Cyborg tackled through the door leading from the stairs, sending it flying off its hinges. The rest of the team followed after him, most of them gasping for breath at their run.

Beast boy was the first to speak, with a convicting tone in his voice directed at Robin, “Dude, I told you to get that door fixed.”

“Now's not really the time for that.”

Robin didn't even look at him as he said that, eyes fixated on Slade's massive ship that was floating menacingly over the burning city. He could still remember it, that fateful day when he and the others witnessed him fall to his death. No one else spoke for a while as the team took the time to catch his or her breath. Robin felt a warm hand over his shoulder, and looked back to see Starfire. Her green eyes pleading at him. No words were needed. He knew what she meant.

“Robin…”
Clasping his hand to the one on his shoulders, he spoke gently. “I know, Star, I know…”

Both of them got lost into each other, standing there like that for a few moments.

“Ahem, Not to be a move breaker,” Raven began in trademark monotone underneath her hood, “But there's still the issue of the `being over runned by an army of robots' thing going on.”

The two suddenly looked the other way, both blushing furiously and mumbling incoherent things.

“I, ah, um, er, Right.” They both stammered.

The distant sounds of the many robots echoing from the open stairwell seemed to grow louder by the second as the machines got closer. Cyborg pointed the sonic blaster to the floor and began another sonar scan of the building

“They're only 2 floors away now” Cyborg announced gravely, reverting the weapon back to his arm. “Robin, if you got a plan, get with it now dawg, `cause it's do or die, and I don't plan on- what the hell are you doing?'”

Robin was now on all fours, feeling the floor with his hands as if searching for a dropped contact lens. “Searching for our escape path. There's a secret elevator installed under the tiles that leads all the way down to the sewers. Bruce had it installed when Wayne Industries built this place. Batman's always ready for anythi-” He cringed as the entire team yelled into his ears.

“Why didn't you say so earlier!?”

Immediately, the team began to spread out across the roof, searching for the hidden elevator. They knew that each passing second meant the robots were getting closer. Beast boy was in the form of a bloodhound, sniffing the floor when he smelled something odd, letting out a howl to get the other's attention before transforming back to his normal self.

“Guys, I think I found it!” he announced on the communicator while knocking on a certain spot on the floor. It slid open, revealing a voice lock system. Speaking his name into the device, the floor in front of him split open and a rather large enough compartment rose from the gap. Beast boy gave a toothy grin “Yep, definitely found it!”

Robin's voice crackled from the communicator, fuzzy from the elctro field's magnetic interference. “Good job, beast boy, we'll be there in a second.”

Sounds of blaster shots erupted on the roof as the robots came streaming out of the stairwell, shooting at every direction. Cy raised his sonic cannon and tracked it at the nearest one, blowing a hole in its chest.

“They're here!”

Cy continued to return fire into the mass of machines, being joined by Starfire and Robin a few moments later. Red beams streaked past their heads, narrowly missing them as they made their way towards the elevator. Starfire was panting as she flung another star bolt into the face of an unfortunate robot. With a screeching battle cry, she sent forth a stream of green energy, clearing a straight line in the middle of the enemy ranks. She dropped to her knees as she fought for breath. That was it, she felt totally spent. “This is too much.”

“Come on!” Robin said, picking her up by the arm after throwing a birdarang that slashed deep into the body of a robot. “We're almost there! Don't give up, Star!”

“Just go on without me, Robin. I'll hold them-”

He grabbed her face with one hand gently and tilted it towards his so they would be looking eye to eye. “I am not leaving this place without you, Star! And I sure as hell won't let you treat yourself like this! What's the matter with you? We need you now, Starfire! I need you now!!”

She looked back at him, lost for words “Robin, I-”

“Would you two just keep moving please!?” Cyborg roared angrily as he stood protectively in front of his teammates, being chipped at by enemy fire and blasting away at the robots. A blast caught him squarely in the gut, not doing any serious damage, but he felt like he was just rammed by a tank. “Oooofff!!”

Staggering backwards, he was caught by the red haired Tamaranean as she and Robin sent a star bolt and birdarang barrage at the attackers direction.

“Forgive me for my foolishness, friends. Let's not keep Beast boy waiting.” She said, not stopping her barrage with a determined look on her face as the metal giant got back to his feet.

“Now that's what I'm talking about!” Cy said triumphantly as he joined the two in the frag fest.

Back on the elevator, Beast boy was pulling out all stops to defend it, transforming from one species to another to suit his fighting needs. One second he was a rhino, charging through the enemy ranks. The next he was a gorilla, banging metal heads together, then a snake, a ram, a velociraptor, a bull, a pterodactyl, a tiger, an ant, a bee, a shark, an elephant, a turtle... By god, he had lost count. Reverting back to human form, he stood gasping for breath on the massive elevator. There were still dozens of robots that were closing in on him.

“Exactly how many are you guys!!?” He yelled, jumping off the elevator as red beams crisscrossed the area he was just standing in. A blink of an eye later, he was a tiger, pouncing on a group of robots, then transforming into a bear, ripping them apart with his claws. A beep on his communicator got him back to reality as Raven's voice blared through.

“I'm pinned down, there're too many of them, I'm on the far side near the water tower, I need help, now!!” The transmission then turned into static.

“Oh shoot, no.” Beast boy began as he contacted Robin, taking cover around a corner. “Hey man, my hands are full, Raven needs help, pronto!! Do you copy!? Over!”

All he got was static.

“I said do you copy!? Over!” Receiving no reply, Beast boy growled and placed the communicator back on his belt. “I guess I have to do it then.”

Transforming into a cheetah, he rushed out of his cover and headed for Raven's direction. Beams ricocheted around him as the robots made hot pursuit. With a low roar, he had no choice but to back track and take cover behind the elevator, which was roughly around as big as his room. He was back in human form again as more shots peppered the elevator. Saying a prayer under his breath, he changed back into a cheetah, but before he could dash off, something on the side of the elevator caught his eye. Stopping in his tracks, Beast Boy turned back into human form and reached for it. “Well this is interesting…”

Being surrounded by dozens of the robots while being pinned back against the wall and being fired at by blasters, she decided it was time to get creative. Raven's eyes glowed white as she held her hands out, palms open, pointing at her attackers. “Azarath Metrion Zinthos!!”

At once, several robots were encased in a dark aura and were swung violently, bashing onto their counterparts. She was using her enemies as her weapons, sending robot parts flying all over the place. Shifting her focus to the pieces of scrap metal that fell on the floor, she sent them darting at lightning quick speeds towards another group of machines, shredding them into pieces. But no matter how hard she fought, more and more kept coming.

Raven winced as a beam narrowly missed her, feeling the burning heat as her cloak was singed through, catching fire. “Oh now you did it.”

Unclasping the scorching cloak and tossing it into the face of a nearby robot, Raven began dodging in and out of another wave of blind shot blaster fire. Using graceful acrobatics, she got close enough to it to deliver a spinning kick to the machines face as it was untangling itself, making the head twist 720 degrees on it's neck before ripping off. Grabbing one of it's flailing arms, she twisted the machine in front of her, using the decapitated body as a shield. The blaster fire of the dozens more intruders were making easy work of their fallen comrades armor, and Raven knew it wouldn't be long before it would give.

Closing her eyes in deep thought, she let go of the now mutilated machine, dropping it to its knees in front of her as she said. “Azarath Metrion Zinthos!”

A force field of dark energy warped around her as she focus all her concentration into it. She was now being fired upon from all sides, each resulting impact resonating around her. The blaster fire kept coming, becoming faster and increasing in number with each passing second.

“Where are you guys?” She whispered to herself through gritted teeth as her whole body shook from the pressure the battered force field was giving her. At that very moment, a series of explosions took hold of her attackers. A cloud of smoke surrounded the field and limited her vision. She could tell this much however, the robots seemed to have taken interest in another target.

The very roof shook with each powerful explosion, taking out at least half a dozen robots with each one. Deciding to take her chance, Raven dropped the force field and ran towards the silhouette of a group of 5 machines. Using her dark magic to clear a path in the smoke, she got into melee range of her targets and began to systematically attack each one. Jumping up to kick the first one twice in the head in mid air, she dropped to a crouching position on the ground in front of another one, which was about to fire, trailing it's blaster at her face. Rising quickly, she lunged forward and took hold of the arm holding the blaster, shifting her entire weight to the right. This caused the robot to stumble and sweep fire at the other 4 machines, dropping both as they were peppered full of holes to the neck and chest. Having served his purpose, Raven quickly muttered her incantation and the machine was enveloped in the all too familiar dark aura. Not a second later, the robot was propelled vertically into the sky, then it began to fry as it slammed back first into the electro field that surrounded the tower. The smoke slowly cleared as the fighting halted, giving Raven a perfect view of her `savior'.

Beast boy let out a sigh of relief as he unslung the two 6-pod rocket launchers from his shoulders. A 3rd one, empty with use, was hanging to its strap around his neck. He wasted no time to let the weapons drop to the ground with a light clank of metal on concrete. Across his the exhausted expression on his face was a slight grin. “Told you I got your back covered.”

“Umm, thanks…” replied an equally exhausted Raven, her sight was then turned to the now empty heavy artillery weapons that lay around Beast boy's feet. With a raised eyebrow, she asked: “So where'd you get these, Rambo?”

Beast boy gave a slight chuckle while shrugging. “Robin wasn't exaggerating when he said that the Bat was ready for anything.”

“Nice.”

“Let's go, the others should be waiting for us.” Beast boy gestured to Raven to come as he heard the sound of more machines coming with his heightened senses. He then realized Raven was without her cloak and that he had been staring at her skimpily costumed form for a while now. With a blush, he averted his gaze and stammered something about something even Raven couldn't quite make it out. When she did, she too began to blush and sheepishly attempted in vain to cover herself up.

Robin, Starfire and Cyborg had already secured a perimeter around the Elevator when they had arrived, keeping the machines at bay. At one point, the entire team actually thought they were winning, but their hopes were shattered when more machines stormed through the stairwell.

Robin twirled his bo staff in the air before whacking a couple of robots that were getting too close for comfort, sending them flying backwards. With a flick of the wrist, the weapon shrunk in length as he tucked it in his belt, replacing it with a two handfuls of exploding discs. He turned to Raven and Beast boy, relief showing on his face. “Glad you two decided to join us.”

Cyborg and Raven both acknowledged them in kind as they continued to rain at the enemy from their firing position on top of the large elevator. The perimeter they had created was slowly beginning to fall, and Robin noted this with a grim look on his face. It didn't matter however, with the entire team here, they had no other reason to stay.

“Titans!” He began as he tossed both handfuls of explosives on a timer fuse into the mass of robots “Into the elevator now!!”

The door of the elevator slid open and the Titans quickly jumped in, shooting back at their attackers until the door shut again. The elevator was blasted at on all sides by the robots, and for a second, they thought it wouldn't hold. Finally the elevator began to descend downwards at a rushing acceleration rate, the sound of gunfire becoming a distant background noise, and the shaking explosion from Robin's grenades as they went off, a final crescendo.

Tired and exhausted, the team took this momentary rest for all it's worth. Noticing her dilemma, Robin unclasped his cape and offered it to Raven, who took it with a quick “thanks”, semi blushing. She wrapped it around her like a makeshift skirt, and finally eased up her tension, taking a seat and began to meditate. Cyborg was leaning on another side of the elevator as he made a quick check on his systems and inserting a fresh battery into his sonic cannon, as the depleted one dropped with a clunk on the floor. Beast boy was lying on his back in the middle of the place, taking in a quick nap. All that shape-shifting was hell to his stamina. And Starfire sat at another corner, wrapping her arms around her knees. Robin approached her and sat next to her, giving her a reassuring smile.

She smiled back, but only momentarily as she looked at him again with those pleading eyes.

Robin cocked an eyebrow and looked inquisitively at her. “What?”

“Please Robin… Don't you dare go against Slade without us.”

He looked away from her innocent gaze and let out a sigh.

“Please?”

With a defeated sigh, he cupped he touched one of her hands and smiled. “I promise.”

The elevator began to slow down, and the rest of the Team stirred once more as it finally came to a stop. Slowly, the doors creaked open, revealing a long dimly lit tunnel that seemed to go for miles.

Robin took the first step outside, holding a bright neon green glow stick in one hand. “Titans, go!”
