Prologue
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About four-thousand years before our story began, the god of the Eastern Sea, Niklo, was given a sacred girt from the mother of the universe. History calls this holy object the "Star Of Hope," for it shines as bright as the stars in the sky, and has the power to keep peace throughout all the worlds. But this immense power can also be reversed. Darkness, death, and hate can also be brought upon the worlds, should the Star fall into evil hands. Luckily, Niklo was a gracious god, and would only use the star to help his people, not for his own purposes. The other gods accepted that Niklo had received this wondrous gift, while they had acquired nothing. They knew that Niklo was of purity, and that no matter how hard they tried, their souls would want to use the holy object in an ill manner.
After some time, however, one of the gods began to reconsider his acceptance of the situation. Kustan was still young to existence, and did not yet have his own people. He usually had good sense, but an evil force had begun to overcome him. Kustan began to have thoughts as to what he could do with the Star, and his dreams were filled with total domination. Taking the form of a human-being, he traveled to the eastern half of the world Humia, where Niklo was worshipped by all.
Being a god, Kustan had immense powers, and was able to imprint human minds with thoughts of rebellion. These rebels thought that Niklo had taken the Star from the unknown god Kustan, so that he could stop them from becoming the most powerful force in the world. These possessed peoples became known as the Asdinolentians, or, in their tongue, the "true leaders." The Asdinolentians were great in number and killing power, yet they had no direction. No one was there to give them orders. But not for long...
Kustan went about his becoming a people god subtly. He sent messages to the intelligent ones during their sleep, telling them that the almighty one was to come and descend upon them, and guide them to their conquering of the world. After he had made sure that the men knew that he was coming, he carefully scheduled a time and place to make his appearance. There was a rally in a wide open field on a day when the clouds filled the sky, and the sun had not even the slightest peek through. (Kustan had set it up that way; he was wanted to make a true impact.) Then, just as one of the leaders began to address the crowd, the clouds began to part, and the light shone down on the top of a hill that all could see. There stood Kustan, in all of his glory, decorated from head to toe in glittering jewels.
He spoke, his voice echoing over the vast meadow, "Behold, I have come to lead thee in thy quest to take back the Star Of Hope, and place it in the hands of its rightful owner. I am called Kustan, and I have consented thee to worship my mighty being and power. From this day forward all shall call me Kustan, God of the Asdinolentians."
And all that were present cheered with such blind infatuation, that it could be heard in the far off mountains of Kordania. They obeyed and tended to his every whim, while he constructed his plan to take the Star Of Hope from its resting place.
It was perfect. Niklo was a very caring and trusting god. If he had only guarded himself and the gift more carefully, history would have been totally rewritten. But, alas, Niklo had no reason to distrust his people. So, when a disguised leader of the Asdinolentians came to Niklo, begging him to help some farmers whose fields were being burnt by a horde of horrible monsters, the god rushed to help his people. He left hastily, to reach the farmers before any more damage could be done. He ordered his guards to follow him, thinking that they could help him find the beings responsible for the terrible act. Thinking that the man who had come to tell him of the incident was honest and true, Niklo left him alone in the presence of the Star Of Hope.
Remembering his new god's orders, the man in disguise quickly pulled an object out from underneath his robes. It appeared to be a simple steel sphere, the kind one would use as a weight when fishing, but it was much more. He laid it upon the pedestal, next to the glowing orb-like object. Immediately are leaving his touch, the ball began to gleam a crimson red. It expanded, and engulfed the Star within its evil aura. Finally, it shrank back down to its former size and returned to its dull metallic color. The Star Of Hope was now trapped within the seemingly insignificant sphere. The man howled with cruel laughter, and rushed out of the palace.
With the holy object now in his possession, Kustan began changing the world. These changes filled Humia with hate and suspicion. He gave man the ideas of such awful things as slavery, racism, perversion, plotting, and greed. Doing all this would provide distraction in the rest of the world, so that he could use the Star to wipe out all people, and have the Asdinolentians populate the entire world. But Kustan had not known that the other gods could sense the Star Of Hope when it was being used. They began forming armies of the people they had taken into their care, wanting to return the Star Of Hope to its rightful owner and restore balance to the world.
This was when the mother goddess, Masda, began to take notice of what was happening. She could see all of her sons and daughters encouraging their people to take back the gift she had given to Niklo, and at any cost. Being the caretaker of all, she could sense that this would only bring more dearth and destruction upon a world she had tried so hard to maintain. She could also see that destiny had another in mind, when it came to the restoration of Humia. Masda knew that if she tried to explain this to her children, it would have no effect. They were just too enraged, too set on delivering the Star Of Hope back to Niklo. She had only one choice.
The Mother Of The Universe conjured up a single thought within her mind. As soon as she was done making her wish, all of the gods and goddesses in existence flowed out of their physical forms, and drifted back to their homes in the heavens. They could never interfere with their people again. Once the most powerful beings in the universe, they were now forced to just sit and watch helplessly as their peoples destroyed one another.
Knowing very well that her children were infuriated with her, all Masda could do was sit alone, waiting and watching for something to happen. She also prayed, which may seem odd for the ultimate goddess to do. She didn't pray to beings like herself, however, but to a power even greater than her. The entity that had shown he the truth: Destiny. As she looked down upon the people of the world that had been destroyed, she could only make one wish...that the Chosen One would be stronger willed than her.
