Fan Fiction ❯ The Four Emeralds ❯ A New Name ( Chapter 2 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
A/N: Well, another chapter up and a very tired author. :-P I never knew writing could be so exhausting! But enough about me. I'll let my imaginary fans read the new chappie. Here it is.

“And this is Mrs. Starns room. Try to get a seat in the back this time and we can pass more notes.”
Ellie walked down the halls with Lolli chattering away beside her. She smiled, amused that someone so perky actually existed.
Lolli gasped and whispered to Ellie, “There he is! Oh my gosh, he's so cute! His name is Kyo*, and he's in the 9th grade. Have you ever seen a finer boy?”
Ellie just laughed and kept walking, then turned around and pulled Lolli with her when she wouldn't stop drooling. “You know, you should just go up and say hi or something if you like him that much.”
Lolli rolled her eyes and said, “Easier said than done,” then added under her breath, “much easier.”
Ellie just shook her head. She walked over to the afore-mentioned boy and stuck out her hand. “Hi, my name is Elizabeth. I'm a new student here.”
The boy looked kind of shocked, but he shook her hand and said, “I'm Kyo. Welcome to our school.”
He is kind of cute, Ellie thought to herself. But not that cute.
He had brown hair, but it was so light it was almost a sandy blonde. His green eyes held hers for a moment, before Lolli came over and tugged on Ellie's shoulder.
“Come on, Ellie. We're going to be late.”
With that said, Lolli marched off to the Math room.
“Bye. See you around,” Kyo said before walking off with his friends.
Ellie followed Lolli's path and looked around the Math room. It was identical to the English room, but with math posters instead of grammar.
Don't they have any originality? I mean, gosh, it's like deja vu.
“Ellie!” Lollie said, running to her from where she had been talking to some of the other girls and grabbing her shoulders. “I can't believe you actually talked to him!”
“What? It's not that big of a deal.” Ellie shrugged her off and found a seat near the back. Lolli sat down next to her and whispered,
“Okay, maybe to you it's not a big deal, but it is to me. I can hardly talk to guys I've known my whole life! Well, ok, that's not true. If they're ugly, I have no problem. It's the cute ones that get me.”
Ellie just laughed and unpacked her books.
“Excuse me, are you a new student?”
Ellie looked up. What she saw made her want to puke, and she didn't even know why. The girl had short brown hair and light blue eyes. Her jean skirt was so short, mini didn't even begin to describe it. She wore a light blue tube top that only reached halfway down her stomach, and some hind of cross between high heels and platform shoes with strings that criss-crossed halfway up her legs. There was only one word to describe this girl.
Slut.
“Uh, yes. I am a new student. My name is Elizabeth.” Ellie tried to smile at the whore in front of her, and managed a small smile. The girl scowled.
“Well my name is Leiko and Kyo is my guy. Keep you hands, and eyes, off of him.” With that, she turned on her heel and strutted away.
Ellie sat there, gaping at the incredibly rude girl who had just walked away. “Oh. My. God. She is so rude!”
Lolli looked at her apologetically, “I'm sorry! I forgot to warn you about her. Seriously, Ellie, don't mess with her.”
The teacher walked in just then and wrote the bellword on the whiteboard. Lolli raised her hand, and when Mr. Starn turned around, he nodded for her to speak. “Good morning, Mr. Starn! We have a new student. Her name is Elizabeth.”
Mr. Starn looked at Ellie and frowned. “Elizabeth? I see you still have your English name. Well, it is one of our school policies for every student to have a Japanese name that reflects their personality. But don't worry, as this name is only used in school.”
Still, Ellie was worried. A name that reflected her personality? What if she got a name like pig or idiot? “Um, sir? Would it be okay if I just kept my English name?”
“Absolutely not! If all of the other students have to have a different name, why should you not?”
Ellie just blushed and looked down. Maybe she should start kissing up so that she wouldn't get stuck with a bad name.
“I will allow you to choose a name out of a list I will give you. The list will have the Japanese name and its meaning. The names I put on the list will reflect what I see in you.”
Now she was really panicked. How could he tell what her personality was on the first day of school? He didn't even know she was part demon!
“Oh, and one more thing. You must take that jewelry off right now.”
With that, Ellie fainted.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Ellie? Are you okay?”
As she opened her eyes, Ellie saw the class gathered around her where she was on the floor.
“Ugh, just a few bruises.”
“Good,” Mr Starn said. “Now take off that jewelry.”
Ellie stood and hesitantly unclasped the bracelet and necklace.
Suddenly the room lit up with a fiery light. It surged in to swirl around her body, then exploded and streamed out. When the students looked back again, the new student was different. Where before she had regular ears, her ears were pointed and almost elf-like. But that wasn't the worst of it. She also had a tail. A cat tail.
As they rubbed their eyes and looked back again, they saw that it had not been a dream. In front of them was a…what was she anyways?
“Hey, Lolli! What happened to your ears?” a girl cried out from the other side of the classroom. Mr. Starn was so caught up in gawking at Ellie that he didn't even scold the girl for not using Lolli's Japanese name.
The class looked at Lolli and saw that she too had changed. She also had a cat tail, but instead of just pointed elf ears, she had cat ears! The students looked at one another in amazement. They had never seen anything like this.
Mr. Starn cleared his throat and said, “Well, Elizabeth, I knew you were part youkai the moment I saw you, but I had no idea you were elven too!”
Now it was Ellie's turn to gawk. “You mean you knew I was part demon and still ordered me to take off my concealment charms?!?”
“I never said I knew that those trinkets were concealment charms. Concealments come in all different shapes and sizes, and it seems as if yours were particularly powerful. They managed to break Kioko's spells.”
“Kioko?” Ellie asked, looking around. Only then she saw Lolli's ears, as before she had been to occupied with worrying to notice how her new friend had changed.
“Yes, Kioko,” Mr. Starn went on. “That is Lolli's school name. It means `happy child', or `one that meets the world with happiness'. She received this name because of her…happy attitude.”
“I see,” said Ellie. “And did she too receive this name on her first day of school?”
Mr. Starn nodded his head and said, “All new students receive their Japanese names on their first day of school. Their name is given to them by either me or another teacher that has the right talent or talents.”
“Right talents?” Ellie questioned. Man, this guy is weird, she thought.
“I have the talent of discernment, which means that I can tell your personality right now. Other teachers have psychic talents, meaning that they can look into the future and see how a certain name might affect you. Putting our talents together, we help to find you the most appropriate name. When Kioko first came here, she was shy and sad, but I could tell that this was not normal, and gave her a name that fit her personality and not her current mood.”
“I think I'm beginning to understand,” Ellie stated. Now she was almost eager to see the list of names she could choose from. “So when to I get to choose a name off of the list?”
“Right now, if you want. Your first hour teacher, Mrs. Both, has a psychic talent and we have put together a list of names that would suit you rather nicely. You might be surprised and even discouraged by some, though. Consider Leiko. Her name means `arrogance'.”
At this, Ellie started laughing uncontrollably. She gasped for air and broke out into another fit of giggles. When she finally settled down, she said, “I could have guessed that! Her name fits her perfectly!”
With that statement, something dawned on her. That list of names held her future and reputation. That one little list could make or break her. Ellie's face paled and she became more serious. “I would like to see the list, please.”
Mr. Starn pulled out a piece of folded paper from his pocket and handed it to her. He then told the rest of the students to take their seats and begin bellwork. Obviously the subject of concealment charms and their effects had been forgotten or just postponed for the moment. “Ellie, for bellwork, all you have to do is choose a name. Good luck. And put your jewelry back on for today. I'll write you a note for the rest of your classes, but you need to get new concealment charms by tomorrow.”
Ellie put the necklace and bracelet back on, then sat down and looked at the paper in her hands. She hesitated before opening it, and breathed a prayer to the gods that she would find at least one good name. Then she carefully unfolded the paper and looked down the list.
Takara: treasure; precious object
Emiko: blessed; beautiful child
Kimi: She Who Is Without Equal
Kimiko: child of truth, beautiful child
Maaka: true beauty
Megami: goddess, Japanese for Ellie
Kumiko: eternal beautiful child
Maemi: smile of truth
Mickiko: child of beauty; the righteous way
Taka: tall, honorable
Tsuyu: morning dew
Kaori: fragrant beautiful girl
Mine:(pronounced Me-neigh. Neigh rhymes with weigh) a resolute protector
Naomi: pleasant one; above all; beauty
Sakura: cherry blossoms
Yasuo: peaceful one
Etsu: delight
Keiko: the beloved or adored one
Ren: water lily
Ellie gasped as she saw the last, and most important, name:
Seiko: child the world depends on
Why would that name be on the list? Child the world depends on? How can that be? Nobody depends on me. I'm just Ellie. Nothing more. Maybe Mr. Starn or Mrs. Both made a mistake. That's it, they made a mistake!
Ellie stood up and walked to the front of the room. “Mr. Starn, I think there's been a mistake. Why is the name `Seiko' on my list?”
Mr. Starn smiled at her. “I knew you were going to ask about that one. I think you forget that Mrs. Both has the psychic talent. She saw something, and told me to add `Seiko' to the list. That is all I know. But, please, think about this carefully. The name Seiko only shows up on a student's list once in a blue moon. Honestly, I've never had a student with that name on their list before.”
“B-but, I'm just Ellie. I'm not special…the world doesn't depend on me. No one depends on me!”
Mr. Starn looked Ellie in the eye. “Elizabeth, you are no ordinary teenage girl. You are going to be something, or do something, that will change the world. Whether or not this `something' will be good or bad, we don't know yet. I think when the time comes, it will be your decision.”
Ellie just looked at the teacher. I was right. He's definitely a weirdo.
