Alex tried to keep himself calm as Magnus, along with several other mages walked up to him. "I'm sure you know why we're here." Magnus said coldly as he sneered at Alex, not bothering to hide his contempt.

"Yes. Zanatos wants to know how I can use magic, so he sent his dogs to find out for him." Alex replied calmly. "Come, I'm not sure what good talking will do, but at the very least inside the castle I can assure that I won't be attacked from behind."

"Still sore about the lightning. You really are a whiner. I was only doing what my Lord asked me to do. Surely you could understand that, that's if you ever did anything you were told." Magnus responded with a smirk.

"True, but seeing as how you've turned out by doing everything anyone asks, I'd rather keep my pride and respect than become someone's lap dog. So shall we?" Alex asked, being as polite as he could muster as he indicated the doorway to the castle. Magnus tightened his grip on his staff as if contemplating what he should do. "Remember, you are on my land, which means you don't have Zanatos to protect. I suggest you not make any rash decisions that could cost you your life."

"Threats mean nothing to me coming from one as lowly as yourself." Magnus replied as he turned and started towards the doors, his mages following him.

"Those were not threats, they were promises." Alex said beneath his breath as he followed them into the castle.

Brittany paced about in Alex's study as thoughts raced through her mind. What's going on down there? Why doesn't Alex want me to hear what they're talking about? As soon as the mages arrived Alex's whole demeanor changed. Well, I guess I might as well use my time wisely. I'll make sure to get Alex to tell me what's going on later, for now I guess I'll just study that spell book. I wonder, if that spell I used was so dangerous why wasn't there a warning or anything on it?

With this Brittany went to the bookshelf and opened it with the spell. She took out the archmage's spell book and sat down at Alex's desk and began to study.

"Do you honestly think I know how I am able to use magic? All I know is that I can, end of story." Alex said angrily as Magnus glared daggers at him.

"Do you honestly believe we are that stupid?" Magnus asked in a mighty tone.

"Do you really want me to answer that?" Alex challenged as he looked back at him. I don't know why, but this guy gets under my nerves worse that Zanatos sometimes. I swear its like he's taking lessons from him.

"I noticed you didn't waste anytime teaching the girl magic. Strange, that spell I saw her use when we came up...that seemed an awful like a spell that the archmage had created. A spell that someone like you shouldn't know." Magnus said as he gazed at Alex with intense eyes. "So, how exactly did she learn how to use that spell?"

"What are you insinuating?" Alex asked, immediately becoming defensive.
"I'm not insinuating anything, or at least anything that I don't believe to be true. The only way for her to have learned such a powerful spell as that would be for either the archmage to teach her, or for her to have one of his spell books. Seeing as how the first one is impossible, that leaves only one explanation." Magnus continued, never once did his gaze waver as he studied Alex.

"Heh, whether I do or not is none of your concern nor is it your business. But to put your mind at ease, no I do not have one of his spell books. I'm sure that someone such as yourself who leeched on to Alcadan for all he was worth would have realized if a spell book was missing. The spell she used was a powerful one a Cleric taught her, nothing more." Alex replied calmly. His composure was icy calm, making him hard to read. Finally Magnus looked away in disgust.

"On the subject of the girl, just what is she to you?" Magnus asked with an evil gleem in his eyes.

"My lady?" Rylus called as he knocked on the study door. Brittany looked up from the book and placed a bookmark in it to keep her place as she went to answer the door.

"Yes, what is it Rylus? Is everything okay?" Brittany asked, her immediate concern was that the mages had done something to Alex.

"Oh yes everything is fine. The Lord has requested your presence downstairs so I came to fetch you." Rylus said brightly. "Sorry to disturb your reading though."

"Oh, it's okay." Brittany said with a wave of her hand. "No big. Alex wants me to go downstairs, but he told me to stay up here?"

"Well, one of the mages told me to come and get you. They said that the Lord wanted you, so here I am." Rylus said with a shrug. "Still, you might want to come down just in case. If the Lord really does want to see you, it'll be my neck if you don't come down."

"Yes, your right. I'd feel awful if something were to happen to you on my account. Let me just put up my book and I'll be right there. Just wait outside it won't take but a second." Brittany replied as she headed towards Alex's desk, picked up the spell book and walked towards the book shelf. "Oten..." Brittany stopped in mid phrase as she realized that Rylus was still standing in the door way. Shit, Alex would've had MY neck if Rylus had found the special case. I'll just have to leave it on his desk until I can come back and put it up. "Actually, on second thought I think I'll read this later so I'll just leave it here. If I put it back on the book shelf I'll never find it."

"True, very true. With as many books as the Lord has it would be near impossible to find just one." Rylus agreed with a chuckle. "So, shall we?"

"Yes." Brittany said brightly as she and Rylus walked out of the room together.

"What do you mean by that?" Alex asked. He could feel his demonic side lashing at him mentally. He struggled to control it, even though he knew it would be pointless.

"Simple, you had to bring her here for a reason did you not? Could it be that the demon lord who has resisted feelings for anyone other than himself would actually fall for some pathetic human girl?" Magnus asked."Do you really care about her? Or is she just something for your amusement?" Alex's eyes flashed for a moment at these words as he held back a snarl. Magnus's words hit a nerve within Alex, a nerve even Alex himself had been denying.

For all this time, I have never taken a mate for the simple fact that having one would be my greatest weakness. I tried to resist her as long as I could, but after my body was so badly injured all my demonic energy went to healing and recovering leaving nothing to stop my human emotions. Now, what am I to do? He can't know that I might have feelings for her, for if he does I'll be putting Brittany in more danger. I can't risk that for if anything should happen to her, everything I've worked so hard for would perish.

"To answer your question Magnus. I honestly didn't think you'd be stupid enough to fall for my act." Alex said in a cold tone. "You'd have to be an idiot to believe that I could fall for something as pathetic as her, much less have any feelings for her. The only thing she is to me is my vessel. I have need of her, that is all. Personally, the only reason I keep her around is for personal reasons, nothing more. Humans are frail and weak, ruled by their emotions. As long as I have her believing I care about her, she is mine to control."

"So, your saying the only reason you keep her around for is sex? You truly are pathetic. Even a demon as lowly as yourself could get anyone you wanted just because of your title. Why on earth would you ever want to be with her?" Magnus asked with a disgusted look on his face. Magnus, watch your tone! Even you have over stepped your boundaries. You were supposed to get information from him, not do this! What you are doing right now is beneath you. How could you do something like this to him? Alcadan asked. His voice was full of anger and worry over what Magnus was plotting.

Do not fear. Everything will work out in the end. Soon neither this pathetic excuse for a Lord, or his human woman will be a bother to us or to Zanatos ever again. Trust me. Magnus replied as he looked back at Alex, waiting for his response.

"To tell you the truth she disgusts me. It takes all I can to keep from ripping that bitch to shreds. But as I said before, she is my vessel. I'm sure someone like yourself can understand. She is nothing more to me than a sex slave, but as long as I pretend to care she will never know anything else." Alex said with a wicked grin. I can't help but hate myself for every word I say. It is necessary for what I must do, for that reason I shall continue to play his little game.

"Oh I can understand just fine. Its nothing that should surprise me coming from someone such as yourself. Using an innocent girl for your own reasons. Leading her on and breaking her heart. You truly are a monster." With these words Magnus's look of disgust took on a new form. He smiled evilly at Alex, as if tempting him to try and guess what he knew that Alex didn't.
"What are you talking about Magnus?" Alex asked, confused by what was going on. He was also worried by the sinking feeling he had at the bottom of his stomach and at how uneasy Magnus's grin made him.

"As I said, I understand. The question is...will she?" Magnus said as his grin got wider and he looked at the door behind Alex. Alex paled as he turned around. The door was cracked open and he knew then that Brittany had heard every word he had just said and that he had no one to blame but himself.

"You bastard!" Alex growled, not even bothering to look back as he ran out of the room trying to find Brittany.
