Alex spent the next few days in his study thinking and contemplating. With Kiba taking charge of the wolf demons there was little need for Alex to interfere with their training. Every morning Kiba would have the demons training, leaving the castle empty all except for Alex and Brittany. As Brittany had predicted she wasn't able to fully heal Alex's wounds, but this mattered little due to his healing ability. Despite the numerous things running through Alex's mind he and Brittany enjoyed their time alone together. Alex hadn't lost control of himself, and seemed to to be getting better at suppressing it. Both of the young lovers found themselves drawn together as they gave into their desires. Despite their best efforts to conceal their actions while the wolves were training, both the lovers knew that they were found out when Kiba, Holly, and Shadow walked into their bedroom with smirks on their faces.
"My Lord what exactly have you been doing while we've been busy?" Kiba asked with a knowing smirk upon his lips. Alex and Brittany exchanged glances, each one trying to conceal the blush that was creeping onto their faces.
"What do you mean? I've been doing research." Alex replied calmly. At his statement the demon's could no longer keep a straight face and broke into laughter.
"Yes doing research on Brittany!" Holly teased. Brittany's blush intensified at the comment. Alex was visibly shocked by Holly's comment but still retained his composure.
"There's no point in denying it my Lord, we already know." Shadow added before Alex could respond. "We came in earlier to get some bandages and wraps. Even without our enhanced hearing we knew what you two were doing. From the way it sounded you might have gotten more of a work out then we have."
Everyone laughed as Alex's face soon matched Brittany's crimson appearance. "I am allowed to do whatever I want in my own castle." Alex responded. He faintly glanced at Brittany before continuing. "Frankly I could care less wether or not you know what we have been doing by now it shouldn't come as a surprise to any of you. Still, I have been doing some research concerning the mages. Also, I've been preparing Brittany and teaching her the few remaining spells that I know."
Kiba bit back a joke about Alex preparing Brittany as he grew serious. "So why have you been researching the mages? Surely you don't intend to take on the mages my Lord. Even your luck will run out eventually my Lord. Going against the mages would be suicide." Kiba cautioned.
"I have no intention of fighting them though I am confident that we will have to engage them eventually." Alex said as he casually eased himself into a chair and rested his chin on his hands while looking at the others. Brittany sensed what he was about to tell them and moved over to his side, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"What exactly are you planning my Lord?" Kiba asked, noticing the glances that passed between Alex and Brittany.
"Simple, I plan on paying a personal visit to the mage's realm. Something that happened to me during my battle with the wraiths, as you are all well aware of, allowed me temporary release from the seal that binds my power. That alone gives me enough reason to want to checkout the mages. The fact remains that whoever loosened my seal also knew the spell to make wraiths flesh and blood. In my knowledge there was only one man who possessed the knowledge of that spell. That man is supposed to be dead."
"Your speaking of the Archmage." Shadow concluded." The Lord of the north held a funeral in his honor after his passing. It was supposedly quite impressive. The entire realm mourned his passing on Zanatos's orders."
"I was not aware of that. I knew of supposed passing while I was in exile, but I did not know that Zanatos had given him such an extravagant funeral. Especially considering that Zanatos hated Alcadan." Alex mused.
"Now that you mention it, the Lord of the north ensured that new of the Archmage's death was no secret. I didn't put much thought into it until now, but you'd think that with all the event leading up to the Archmage's death, the chaos of a new Lord of the south and the punishment of his killer, that he'd want to keep the Archmage's death a secret until things cool down. Instead he proclaimed it to everyone." Holly added. She then looked at Alex apologetically for bringing up what had happened. "Sorry my Lord."
"Even though the only reason he pretended to care about the Archmage was so he could train under him, I was still surprised that the young brat Magnus wasn't upset. No one really knows how the Archmage passed away. Everyone just believed that all the magic he had used over the years began to take its toll on him." Kiba revealed. Alex shook his head lightly as he responded.
"No, Alcadan was not one how took his magic lightly. He was the most powerful mage and chosen to be the Archmage because of that fact. The reason that he was so powerful was because he was the very first of his kind. He was the very first mage and therefore was second to none. He wouldn't have died from using magic, that fact I'm certain of."
"My Lord, how do you know so much about the Archmage? I know the Archmage was the most powerful mage, but I had no idea he was the first. You weren't even born yet when the Archmage was first officially given his title. So how do you know this?" Kiba asked.
"That is something that I overheard when I was under Silva's command. As you might not be aware of Silva was one of the last remaining dark world demons he was telepathic. Therefore he knew things that the original demon Lord kept secret. In his prideful arrogance he revealed to me some of the secrets he had stolen from the original Lord." Alex stated.
"Dark world demons, but I thought they were all destroyed." Shadow announced.
"Okay, I know a little about the dark world demons...very little. So what exactly are they?" Brittany asked looking down at Alex.
"Dark world demons are supposed to be an extinct race of demons that once populated the realm. They were in essence some of the very first demons. Silva was one of the last of his kind even though no one knew it. No one knows what the dark world demons looked like, that?s because by the time we came around they were supposed to have died out long ago due to a disease that affected their cerebellum and killed them. Dark world demons were not physically strong, but their minds were very powerful. They had telepathic abilities which allowed them to control the weak minded and, if they are especially powerful, they had the ability to read others minds." Alex informed her. "I have a feeling the original demon Lord knew about Silva's gift, and that is why Silva became one of his four generals."
"So then if the Lord knew this, why didn't he know that Silva was reading his mind?" Holly asked, skeptical of Alex's explanation.
"I'm not sure. Me and Silva were never that close, and the only reason I found out what I did was because he was too proud of himself not to tell anyone. Still, that's not the point." Alex said. "To get back to the main subject of the conversation. In two days me and Brittany will leave to go to the mage's realm."
"What, just you and the lass my Lord?" Kiba asked shocked that Alex was going to take Brittany away from the safety of the castle. Alex knew what Kiba was thinking and was about to explain his reasoning when Brittany spoke for him.
"The mages only weapons are magic. I'm the only one here that can use magic without any repercussion. So I'm the best chance of getting us out of there alive if they decide they don't want us to leave." Brittany said proudly.
"That's understandable, but are you sure you don't want any other help?" Holly inquired knowing that they could use all the help they could get.
"That will be quite alright Holly. We'll be fine. It will be better if I'm the only demon that goes. They will be less apprehensive about me mainly because Magnus doesn't see me as a threat. I will talk to them and see what I can find out. The war is not far off. You can sense it in the air. If I am right about Alcadan's death being nothing more that a cover up to keep his presence a secret, then we might have found a powerful new ally. However, if I am wrong, then I am tipping my hand and revealing my plans to the mages who are devoutly loyal to Zanatos. It's a risky gamble to take, but if I'm correct then we have nothing to fear." Alex said calmly. It was easy to see the doubt and worry on everyone's faces as the solemnly exchanged glances.
"Listen, we'll be fine." Brittany assured them."Alex has taught me a lot of new spells, and I have faith in him. Don't worry about us, just worry about making sure everything will be okay when we return."
Kiba nodded and smiled weakly. "Aye, we will do just that. My Lord, do you want us to contact Rire and the elves?"
"No, I will wait until it is absolutely necessary to call for his aid. The less activity the better. Still, I want you to send a messenger to prepare the clerics for what is to come. We will definitely need their aid for what is to come." Alex advised. Kiba nodded as he, Shadow, and Holly bowed slightly and took their leaving sensing that Alex and Brittany needed some time alone.
As soon as they were gone Alex sighed softly and looked up at Brittany with love in his eyes. "Two days we will go to the mage's realm which is located in the very center of this realm where the four adjacent realms connect. That means we will be fair game for anyone. I won't lie, I'm not looking forward to this, but it has to be done."
Brittany wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered into his ear. "Don't worry, things will work out. They always do. You're a great leader and everyone has faith in you. Relax, things will happen as they are supposed to."
"As long as you are by my side I can't help but look forward to the future. I want to reunite the realm, but that will cost many lives to do so. We need to gain the mages, if I can talk to Alcadan their might be a change to do just that. If we can't gain their trust then the only other option would be freeing the elves from Zanatos's control. Either way, it's not going to end well."
Brittany moved and sat on Alex's lap, kissing him gently on the lips as she looked into his eyes. "I know, but you've got to take your mind off of it. At the very least take a break and enjoy what time you have before we have to leave. I don't want to spend these two days brooding over what is to come. You're the one who told me not to worry about the future, to just let it come at its own time."
Alex shook his head in frustration but soon smiled softly as he pulled Brittany close to him and kissed her. "Fine you win. There's something I need to get from the treasure room before we start enjoying ourselves. I'll be right back okay."
Brittany pouted a little as she got off of Alex's lap to let him up. Her eyes lit up with excitement as a coy smile spread across her lips. Alex reached for the door to leave when she called out. "Just how are we going to enjoy ourselves?"
"The same way we have been." Alex retorted as he turned to look back at her with a devilish smirk on his face. He winked and laughed as he shut the door behind him. These times should be cherished. Once we go and confront the mages there will be no turning back. From this point on everything we do will lead up to one thing...war.

Author's Note: Yay! I'm finally back! Granted I'm still working off of my laptop, but I've mangaged to send most of what I've done onto it. I've got enough written for about fifteen more chapters, and I'm getting close to the ending. I won't post all that I've written at one time though, I'll try and post at least two chapters a day to stretch things out. Hope you enjoy it, bye.
