The game

Jade was digging through her locker for a folder when Miles came up behind her. She didn't notice him and as he touched her shoulder she jumped at least a foot in the air and placed a hand over her chest as she frowned at him.

"What are you trying to do? Kill me before your big game?" She joked aggravated a bit as she picked up a few papers that had fallen from her locker.

"Nah, you're my good luck charm remember?" Miles said casually as he smiled to her. She grins to him and shakes her head slightly, pushing her locker closed slowly.

"You know I have a boyfriend…" She says, looking to him as she plays with some of her chocolate brown hair. He nods, rolling his eyes.

"Yeah, I heard he's been a real jerk to you too.." Miles noted skeptically to her.

"He has a job and I'm never on time either.. We are like perfect for each other.." She grins as she looks to him. "Speak of the devil.." She mumbles as she looks up and walks over to Marcus and kisses him on the cheek, Miles following slowly.

"Hey Marcus.. You know Miles right?" She grins to Marcus as he puts his arm around her possessively. "So the game is Friday night right?" She smiles to Miles. He nods to her and mumbles something about working on his fastball and walks off.

"What's with him?" Marcus asks as Jade shrugs.

They day seemed to Drag on forever until the bell rang and the students poured from the building, eager to leave. Jade made her way to the courtyard to wait for Miles. Miles and she had walked home together since they were in the first grade, and Marcus always had to go straight to work so Jade kept walking with Miles.

"Hey Jade.." Miles said, tossing and catching a baseball in his hand as he walked towards her.

"Hey Miles, ready to go?" She smiles warmly, grabbing her backpack from the cement sidewalk. Miles nods and they begin walking. "So what was that earlier? You just walked off…" She says after a bit of silence.

"I had forgotten coach wanted me to work on my fastball before practice.." He shrugs to her. "Why aren't you with Marcus anyway? Don't you have better things to do than hang with a loser like me?" He grins to her.

"I can't believe you would say that about me!" She exclaims, hugging her books to her as she walks. "Why would you ever say that?"

"Answer the question Jade…" He says simply.

"He has to work and he barely has time to drive to work after school… And I like walking with you.. You're my friend…" She smiles to him, frowning a bit.

"Yeah, your friend.." he rolls his eyes as he walks ahead as Jade pauses and stops.

"What is that supposed to mean Miles?" she asked, crossing her arms.

"It means whenever he is in sight you drop me like garbage and sped every spare moment with him when he is seeing that other girl!" He stopped, he hadn't meant to say that. Jade looked to him, stunned. She turned and walked off, ignoring any attempts for him to redeem himself, she was beyond words right now.

She made it inside her house and up to her room before she fell onto her bed in tears. She was so caught up in releasing her hurt that she didn't hear her window slide open or see Miles climb in. She let out a few more shaking sobs before taking a few deep breaths to calm down as he put his arm around her and held her against him to let her cry some more. She pulled away, wiping her eyes.

"You should leave." She said, biting her lip lightly.

"I'm sorry." His eyes were sincere, but she wouldn't let herself look.

"I said you should go." She repeated, taking a deep breath, she was still hurt.

"But Jade!"

"Just leave Miles!" she said, a stray tear falling down her cheek quickly before she could wipe it away. He was about to say something when he nodded and went back out her window, climbing back down the ladder against her house and up his on the house next to hers. She closed the blinds and sat on her bed, jumping lightly when the phone rang.

"Damn it Miles, I told you to go away!" she said annoyed.

"Hey there Jade, and it's not Miles, it's Marcus.." He sounded happy at her annoyance towards Miles.

"Sorry Marcus, I just had a fight with Miles.." Then his words came flooding back and she had to fight back an angry scream. "How's Brittany?" She asked softly.

"She's great, I swear she get hotter every d.." he trailed off, caught in his scheme.

"Nice to know. I'll see you around Marcus." She hung up before he could protest. She wiped her eyes and went downstairs, pulling a pint of chocolate-chip cookie-dough ice cream from the fridge and a spoon from the drawer, scooping a big spoonful and placing it in her mouth, letting out a soft sound of appreciation.

"Hitting the pint? What happened?" her middle-aged single mother asked, wiping a stray hair away from her face.

"Boyfriend." Jade said with a sigh.

"Gay?" her mom asked humorously.

"That might hurt less." She said with a giggle, taking another spoonful.

"Oh.. Cheating? You caught him?" Her mom asked carefully, watching her expressions.

"Miles let it slip that he'd been with another girl. I got him to tell me how he felt, and yes I'm fine." Jade finished before her mother could speak.

"I'll go wash your sweats then. You'll be wanting them soon, am I right?" she asked with a chuckle as she headed towards the laundry room.

"Yep. Is Shane out for the night? I want to use his punching bag." She asked, studying the spoon.

"He's staying at a friends house I think, and if he tries to say anything about it I'll ground him until he's thirty." She said understandingly.

"Thanks mom." She said, standing. She walked up the stairs and sat in her room, eating ice cream until she felt sick. Her mom came in a few hours later with a cup of water and the phone, covering the mouthpiece.

"Are you taking calls honey?" she asked softly.

"I guess." She sighed and took the phone, answering as her mother left.

"Hello Miles." She said, knowing it had to be him.

"Jade.. I'm sorry about earlier, I was angry and I said some stupid things and I want to make it up to you okay Jade?" he told her more than asked her.

"I'm fine Miles. It's over with him. Thanks for telling me though." She told him.

"I shouldn't have though. I hurt your feelings and I shouldn't have." He said sympathetically.

"Miles, it's okay! I forgive you already!" she said exasperated.

"You'll come to the game then?"

"Sure. Whatever." She replied boredly.

"No whatever Jade, you're my good luck charm!" he said genuinely.

"Okay! I'll come Miles, sheesh!" she scoffed lightly.

"Good. Now go eat more ice cream or something. I know you're still upset." He laughed some.

"What exactly did my mom tell you?" Jade asked as she cocked a brow.

"That you ate an entire pint of ice cream and that I better make everything better or I would be out a good luck charm." He laughed some
