The House

"Alice," the Voice called. "Come along, Alice. It's not yet Time."

Broken emerald eyes half-focused on the nothingness before her.

"Time?" she questioned mutely. "Time for what?"

"No time!" called the Other. "No time!"

"Trust us. Follow us."

Pulling herself from the snow bank she rested in, her flesh a mixture of angry, burnt red and cold, deadly blue, she ran a blistered hand through chocolate locks, powdery white melting upon those unfeeling hands. Straightening her burnt and soaked nightdress as though nothing were wrong with it, she was about to turn to the burnt shell of a house behind her when the Voice shouted to her, "No! See that and we will lose you again! Just… follow us."

Alice nodded after a pause and began to take trembling steps away from the burnt shell, unfeeling and uncaring of the pain that shot through her body. The Voice and the Other crooned and called to her, drawing her nearer and nearer before a second house, a shell of a home just like the one she left, happened into view.

"This?" Alice questioned, no sound passing her lips.

"Yes, dear Alice," affirmed the Voice. "Here you shall stay until it is Time."

The house had two inhabitable stories, the roof collapsing in on the third. Black paint was peeling away creating Hell's halo in the snow. A pair of shattered windows peered down at her, seeming to reflect her very soul. The door swung from one rusty hinge, inviting Alice into its darkened depths.

"You mustn't dawdle, Alice," the Other told her. "Come inside and wait for it to be Time."

Alice nodded and approached the house, reaching up to push the door open and stepping back as the rotted wood almost fell on her. Inside the depths of the shell, for only a flash of a moment, Alice almost saw what could have been a toothy grin and a flash of gold - like that from a pocket watch - and she smiled, dropping to her knees in the darkness, knowing that this was the House to wait in until the time came.

Alice collapsed to the floor and it was there that she was found two years later in that same comatose state, flesh still a blistering, angry red - never healing - broken eyes seeing a world beyond the realms of reality and sanity…

Wonderland.
