Chapter Eight
Spell of the Songstress

The waking world came into her vision in a cloudy haze. Sala felt someone's arm around her and stiffen. When she felt her tunic against her skin, the young wolf woman let out a sigh of relief. Nothing had happened. She glanced next to her and saw Kale sleeping.
Sala rolled quickly away and was on her feet in one quick motion. Her breath came fast. What in the seven hells was he doing here?! Kale's eyes opened slowly. He focused on her glowering face and smiled softly at her.
"Why are you here?!" Sala demanded.
Kale sat up. "You asked me to." he said simply.
Sala paced around the room for a moment. "Why in the seven hells would I do that?!" she growled.
"Drunken moment." Kale smiled.
Sala stopped and glared at him. "Now why would I ask a worthless rat bastard like you to stay the night with me?" she asked in an acidy tone.
The young man shrugged. "You got the hots for me." he said laughing.
"HA!" Sala barked. "Dream on!"
Kale was on his feet and in her face now. He grabbed her shoulders and dug his claws into them a little. Sala winced but made no real sound in pain. A tiny growl passed between her lips as she glared at him.
"Breakfast!" Sathin shouted in their ears.
The two jumped away from him and tripped over each other's feet. Sala landed ontop of Kale with a tiny yelp. They sat there looking at the old man. He smiled down at them and jerked his head in the direction of his table heaped with food.
Sala climbed to her feet. "Grandfather, where were you?" she asked.
"Oh." Sathin whispered. "I...went for a walk."
Kale plopped down in a chair and gobbled down some roasted goose. Sathin and his granddaughter sat and also began to eat. Sala ate a bit of bread with blueberry jam. The old man sipped a cup of coffee, but touched none of the food. Sala glanced at him and decided to leave the old Wolf Mage be since he appeared so deep in thought.
"Eat faster." Kale barked. "We have to leave today."
Sala ground her teeth. "Shut up you sorry shit head!" she growled.
"Flea infested bitch." Kale shot back.
Sathin smiled despite himself. "Sala. Kale." he said softly.
Sala averted her face from Kale's and swallowed her piece of bread quickly. A heavy silence came over the room. It was too much for Sala. She sighed heavily and started to hum. Soon it turned into a lovely song.

This cold hate
Is burning up all inside of me
And will soon consume
Everything I am

You bring this
Icy blue flame to
Engulf all I am
And swallow me whole

It's not my fault
That I'm so different
Or that you're
So afraid of what you don't know

Kale stared at her as the last note fell away from her lips. He'd never heard such a voice. Only tales from long ago told of a woman who could enchant elements and men with her voice. Sathin smiled at the look on the young Draegan male's face. It was just as he thought it would be the first time Kale heard Sala sing. Now he was under the Traevakin's spell.
Sathin cleared his throat. "Time to go." he said.
Sala rose to her feet and moved towards the door. Sathin watched his granddaughter as she stood there in a bright shaft of sunlight. She was so like Gemma that it was so hard for him to do all of this to her. Kale rose and went to stand beside her.
"Remember Singer," he said, using her wolf name. "That little pipe I gave you will aslo come in handy should your voice fail you."
Sala nodded. "Yes, Grandfather." she said.
To Kale he simply said. "Peace."
Kale nodded slowly and turned on his heel. Sala stood for a moment more, staring into those deep grey eyes of her grandfather. He smiled softly and Sala turned away from him. She followed behind Kale, ready to be on her way. As they went, the young woman hummed a little tune to herself.
"Peace to you, my children." Sathin said to the fading figures.
