Chapter Sixteen
Fire Inside

A cold shock ran through her body. Sala opened her eyes, seeing a dark grey cloud hovering overhead. Smoke. She sat up quickly and looked around the room. No flames consumed the room around her. Smoke filled the air, but nothing more than that. A tiny flicker caught her eye. Sala looked towards the hearth. Among the ashes of a fire long since burned out, danced a feminine figure.

Long, orange locks flowed out behind her as she twirled within the grey and black heap of burnt pine wood. Sala shook Kale and pointed towards the hearth. The young Draegan male rubbed his eyes, yawning loudly. When his eyes adjusted to being open once more, Kale's mouth dropped.

"The Fire Spirit." he whispered.

"I see that, you clod." Sala shot back.

The woman in the hearth was oblivious to her audience.

Kale climbed slowly out of the bed. "I have to warn the others. You capture her and meet us outside." he said, dressing quickly.

Sala nodded. Kale left the room swiftly and silently. Still, the flame woman took no notice to Sala. The wolf woman climbed out of bed and crawled to where her clothes lay, discarded in favor for other activates. Sala jerked her reed flute out of her pocked and brought it to her lips. As she inhale, the dancing flame woman whirled in her direction and sent a ball of fire hurtling towards her.

A cry of pain escaped Sala's lips as the fire ball burned her reed pipe to cinders and leapt back from her. Sala fell back, staring at the lovely fire woman. Blue, flaming eyes stared back at her. A sinister smile crossed the woman's lips as she continued her little dance.

"You can't capture me that easily." she said.

Her voice sounded like flames hissing after a raindrop hits it. Sala crawled backwards towards her daggers. They had her power. They could help her fight this fiery bitch. Sala felt the hilts in her hands and tore them from their sheaths. The woman laughed coldly.

"Fool." she spat. "No one can beat, Firixa."
Firixa walked smoothly from among the ashes and stood on the wooden floor. Beneath her feet, flames flickered to life and began to burn the wooden floor. Sala leapt to her feet and brandished her stardiamond daggers. Firixa laughed softly in that hissing tone she had.

"Burn, child!" she shouted, sending another fire ball at Sala.

Sala fell backwards, the flaming ball catching her temple. She yelled in pain and grabbed at the burnt spot on her face. Draegas feared fire more than anything else. A tear escaped the corner of her eye as she lay writhing on the floor. Firixa laughed and sent more fire balls at her. All around Sala the room caught fire.

"See me when you're worthy, you foul little beast." Firixa said and her body turned to ash.

She floated out of the window and disappeared from view. Sala lay on the floor, holding her temple. She crawled to all fours and scooted to her daggers' sheathes. Placing them back into their sheathes and belting them around her calves, Sala ran at the opened window. As she leapt from blazing room and into the chilly night air, Sala realized that her clothes were back in the room, burning.

Sala hit the ground and rolled for a little ways. People murmurred when she was up on her feet again. Sala looked up to her burning room. She had leapt out of a second story window with only one burn on her temple to show for it. Kale, Yent, and Frax ran towards her.

"Sala!" Frax yelled. "Are you all right?"

She nodded. "Yes, but my...pipe..." she said, her voice faultering.

"Forget the pipe!" Frax shouted. "You could have died."

Kale pulled off his tunic and tossed it to Sala. "You fucking idiot!" he growled. "That pipe was the only way for her to capture the Orbs. Now how is she going to get them back?!"

Frax was silent. In the darkness, Yent smiled. Sala caught sight of it. She knew that the little man hated his master, but this smile held something elst to it. Yent turned to a woman, wrapped in only a blanket. Her hair was in disarray and even in the cold weather, she was sweating.

"Yent?" Sala asked.

The Giggat looked at the young harlot then back at Sala. He gave another sly grin. Kale let chuckled, dispite the grim situation. Frax looked at the three to them, ignorant of what was going on.

"Looks like you got more balls than you master." Kale said, putting a mocking emphasis on the last word.

Sala tossed her blue locks behind her shoulder. "C'mon." she said, walking towards the forest.

"Where are we going?" Frax asked.

"Wait and see." Sala said, not even bothering to look back at him.

Kale shook his head. "Leave it to Sala to leap out of a burning building, naked, and save only her weapons." he said, laughing as he followed after her.
