Chapter Twenty-Three
Tremors
Far blow the surface of Ravika, the earth trembled. Sala opened her eyes and stared up into the darkness that surrounded her. Slowly she rose to her feet and crept to the door. A shiver ran up her spine as her hand hovered over the door knob. Sala grabbed the door knob and step out into the swirling snow falling.
The snow danced around her as she moved over the freshly fallen snow. As she stood there, shivering, she began to make the figure of a man. He neared her slowly. When he was a few feet from her, Sala could see his strong features. His eyes were an earthy brown as were his tattered clothes. Finally, the young man stopped three feet from her and began to chant in a deep baritone voice.
He stood there, staring at her as his lips brought a strange, yet beautiful sound to her ears. Abruptly, the earth beneath her feet began to tremble violently. Sala fell to her hand and knees, looking up at the stranger. A look of violent anger washed over him as he looked down at her.
"No it's your turn to fear for your life." he whispered.
The earth roared and began to lurch beneath her. Sala let out a scream as the earth beneath her
opened to revealing a dark pit. She felt her stomach give a sickening lurch of its own as she fell into the yawning maw. Her hands clawed at the air and finally found solid rock to grab hold on.
Near the edge of the pit, the young man appeared over head. Sala looked at him and then at the empty blackness below her. She knew what this man was. The Draegan woman looked up at him and her face clouded with anger.
"The Earth Spirit!" she said softly.
"Terak." he said. "I hold you life in my earth worn hands."
Sala's eyes widened as she gazed up at the young man. Would he really kill her? The look in his eyes left no doubt in his mind that he probably would given the chance or even the smallest reason to do so.
"Let me up!" she shouted.
Terak laughed. "Only if you can give me the answers I want." he said.
Sala felt her heart sink. No amount of battle skill could save her here. She hung helplessly staring up at the young man.
"Fine." she said. "I'll do anything you wish."
Again Terak laughed. "That's what I wanted to hear." he said.
