Chapter Twenty-Six
Silence of Sorrow

Just let me stay in this oblivion where no pain can touch me. Sala pleaded with her mind.
As she slid through the darkness that her sorrow had brought her to, the Draegan saw blurry visions forming before her.

Her mother and father were there and Sathin stood some feet away from her. He looked down at her with a disgusted look in his eyes, but it vanished when Sala ran to him and buried her face in his robes. For a moment he made no move to pick her up. Then when she held her arms up to him, Sathin sighed and picked her up.

"Little pup." he whispered. "Soon you will be of use to me."

Sala giggled and shoved her hands into his long beard. She pulled it hard, making the old man grunt. He pulled her away from his facial hair and held out his left hand. The child stared down at it for a moment. When a ball of fire appeared in his palm, Sala reached out to touch the dancing ball of flame. Sathin stood watching her, making no move to keep her from burning herself.

"Father, don't let Sala touch that!" Gemma ordered.

Sathin growled lowly in his throat and closed his hand around the glowing flame. Sala looked at his empty palm and began to cry. Sathin bounced her on his hip in hopes that it would quiet her. The little girl continued to cry as he bounced her up and down. Gemma began to sing lowly and her husband began to play a tiny reed pipe.

Sala became silent and started to hum along. Gemma stopped singing and allowed her child to sing. Soon Sala began to sing in a perfectly pitched voice. Sathin looked at the child as she began to sway and sing in her lovely voice. He looked down in time to see a tiny rose grow at his feet. Sathin held the child away from him and stared at her.

"The Keeper.." he whispered.

"Father?" Gemma asked.

Sathin shook his head and smiled at Sala. The little girl giggled, pulling on his beard once more. Sathin continued to smile at his granddaughter.

"Soon." he whispered. "Soon you will be of use to me."

NO!

Sala's eyes shot open and she shot up off of the ground. She couldn't give in now. Far too much had been accomplished for her to give up. Frax laughed evilly and stared at the lovely woman.

He held his hand out to her. "Stand by my side and all will be well for you." he said.

Sala closed her eyes, tears squeezing through her tightly shut lids. She shook her head vigorously
and backed farther away from Frax, his father, and her grandfather. She could never be a part of his evil. No part of her could give in. Slowly, Sala reached for the pipe in her belt and brought it to her mouth.

As the soft, lamenting song filled the air, all of the Orbs began to glow. Very slowly, they removed themselves from having any contact with her body and came to hover before her. She heard Kale rise to his feet behind her, but knew she couldn't spare him a glance at this crucial moment. Her silence of sorrow may have robbed her of some of her powers, but not all of them.
