Chapter Twenty-Nine
Dying Light
The laugh that cut through the air came as a surprise to Sala. Frax flung his head back and laughed even louder. Sala crouched and withdrew her daggers. She spun them through her fingers, smirking at her former companion and friend. Frax stopped laughing as abruptly as he started. Sala chuckled softly, stopping the spinning of her daggers and gripping them tightly.
"What's so funny to you?" Frax asked.
Sala shrugged. "Not sure yet." she said. "Just thought it would be nice to laugh with you one last time."
Frax nodded slightly. "Are you really sure that you should be fighting in your condition?" he asked.
"Condition?" Kale asked in puzzlement.
Sala sliced the air with her daggers and growled. "Forget that!" she ordered. "Just fight you cowardly bastard!"
Frax bowed to her mockingly. "Very well, Lady Sala." he said, placing mocking emphasis on her title.
Sala closed her eyes and crossed her daggers in front of her. As she moved, so did the angelic figure behind her. Frax, however, stood motionless. Sala flung her arms open suddenly and slammed them together so that the daggers hit one another. Then angelic creature that hovered high above her made the same motions, a beam of silver light shooting from his fingertips as his hands met one another. Frax closed his eyes as the beam came towards him.
A smirk crossed his face and Frax opened his eyes. The beam of silver light froze midair. Sala staggered backwards, staring in horror at him. How could he stop her light? Frax raised his arm and sliced the air before him. The bright light beam flew away from him and hurtled towards Sala. A scream of agony escaped her lips as the silver light seared her flesh and pierced her heart.
"NO!" Kale screamed. "SALA!"
He ran towards the young woman and caught her as she fell to the ground. Kale hit his knees and skidded to a stop at her side. Frax laughed evilly. Kale looked up at him, felling his stomach twist at the sick, twisted look that covered Frax's face. Kale rose to his feet, but before he could move, Frax was gone.
"Kale?" Sala asked, her voice weak.
The young man grasped her hand, bringing it to his lips. He kissed it gentely and closed his eyes. Sala's free hand moved to the Orb of Light. Kale opened his eyes, watching her remove it from around her neck. She held it out to him. Slowly, the Draegan male took the glowing Orb from her hand. Above them, the angelic man burst into tiny balls of white light and entered the Orb.
"Good-bye, Kale." she said.
"Sala!" Kale yelled. "Sala, please don't leave me!"
Her hand fell from his and hit the ground. Kale looked down at her body and his grip on the Orb tightened. Slowly, the light writhing the Orb of Light died. Kale fell onto Sala's lifeless body and felt something flitter within her stomach.
"You couldn't have what you wanted anyway." she had told him.
"Should you really be fighting in your condition?" Frax asked.
Kale rose to his knees and looked down at her body. Could it be? He lay his head down on her stomach again and felt the same little flitter of something moving. Kale jerked up once more and scrambled away from the body of his beloved. She was dead and so was his... child.
