Chapter Thirty

What Now?

 

Kale stood beside the pile of earth that hid his beloved and their child from the world's eye. His hand went up to the dead Orb of Light. Then it fell to the pipe in his belt. Her pipe. Slowly, Kale withdrew the pipe from his belt and began to play. A light wind picked up.

 

As it caressed his face and passed his ear, Kale heard Sala's sweet voice singing to him once more. He pulled the pipe away from his mouth and tilted his face to the sky. It was turning pink as dawn approached. A tear slid from the side of his eye and landed on the mound of earth.

 

Deep in his heart, Kale knew that he had to hunt Frax. How could he kill the man when not even Sala, with the help of the Orb of Light, could do it? His hand went to the Orb once more. Somehow he had to finish this. He had to take the life of the man who had robbed him of his beloved and of his... child.

 

It was easier for him to think of her as being above him rather than buried in the cold ground below him. Slowly, Kale descended the mountains and came to stand in a small meadow. The wind continued to blow around him and bring Sala's song to him. Her voice sank into him. Through his flesh, into his heart, and touched his soul.

 

"I will join you soon, my love." he said to the brightening sky. "But not today."

 

With one glance back at the mountains, Kale started towards the North. Frax would continue to go North and Kale would find him.

 

"I'm coming for you, Frax." Kale growled to the raising sun. "The Spawn of the Black Moon with kill you."
