Part Nine

+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+

Syth sighed in exasperation and boredom. He was leaning against the open double doors in the music room, keeping watch on Amarette. Not a very exciting task. He sighed again, gazing longingly at the clear night sky.

"Why can't I go for a ride again?" he whined, slumping to the deck.

"Because you have to watch the girl," Sin returned curtly from the library.

Syth moaned. "And why can't you watch her?"

"Because," Sin closed the book he was flipping through and headed for the kitchen, "I hate her."

"Hate is a very strong word, Aniki," Syth chided. "Besides, you'll be yards and yards away from her," he attempted again hopefully.

"Nice try."

"Aniki!" Syth begged tearfully from his post.

"No," Sin cut in sternly. "Has she showed any sign of movement?"

Syth sighed in defeat. "Iie. She hasn't even so much as twitched for hours," he responded dismally. Then a thought came to him. "Maybe she's dead," Syth suggested playfully.

Sin walked past his brother wearing a coat and carrying a blanket. "That's not funny," he said as he walked out, heading for Amarette.

Syth sighed yet again. "Like I said, hate is a strong word," he whispered as he gladly slipped away from his post and went inside.

Amarette was still sitting on the sand, looking out at the dark waters. She was cold, but there was no way she was going to go back to that house. Nope.

These thoughts were interrupted however as something soft and warm was dropped on Amarette's head. For a moment she didn't move, then she sat forward, pulling the soft object from her face. It was a blanket. Looking up she saw someone she did not expect to see.

"Which one are you?" she asked with a frown.

"You're welcome for the blanket," Sin said icily, gazing out at the ocean.

"Ah, I see," Amarette commented with evident dislike. "You're that one. What do you want?"

Sin bit his tongue inside his mouth and kept quiet. To restrain himself from kicking the smart-aleck next to him, he sank down to the ground.

Seeing that she was going to get no answer from the boy, Amarette rolled her eyes and returned her gaze to the ocean. After a while she said, "I don't believe you, you know...Not in the least."

"I know," Sin responded simply.

"Then why are you out here?" she asked, pulling the blanket around her shoulders.

"To make you believe, at least a little," he said absently, also gazing at the water.

"You can try," breathed Amarette, ending the short conversation.

Sin bit his tongue again. He was really beginning to not like this girl. So he sat, thoughtful for a while.

"What do you imagine Hell to be like?" the question came suddenly.

Amarette looked up quickly, caught off guard. "What?"

"Hell," Sin repeated, "What do you imagine it to be like?"

Amarette frowned. "Is this a trick?"

Ignoring her question, Sin continued. "Truthfully, everyone has their own version. Fiery pits, empty abysses, so many terrors to choose from." He paused. "What was your family in this world like?" Sin asked out of the blue.

Amarette frowned again. What was this kid trying to pull? "Do you have a point?"

"I'm getting there," he said, still gazing at the ocean. "Answer the question."

Amarette let out a small sigh and looked out to the cold, black waters. "They were great. Until they found out I was freak. Now mommy's terrified of her little girl and daddy wants to lock her up to keep her quiet," she muttered finally, bitterness saturating every word.

"Siblings?" Sin prompted.

Amarette paused. "One," she said quietly. "Younger brother. He died a year ago."

Sin nodded. "I can tell from your tone that he was more important to you than your parents. So you know how it is to lose someone close to you?"

"He was the only one who didn't think I was nuts," was Amarette's response as she shifted uncomfortably under the blanket. "What's your point?"

Sin stayed silent for a moment, his expression darkening. "Once, a very, very long time ago, Syth and I had a family. A father, mother, and 12 older siblings, most of whom were girls. Out father, a king, was busy with work most times, and mother was always with the elder children, teaching them things like etiquette, and royal procession, and manners," he began, "Syth and I were the youngest, and also, there were two of us, so we were basically the babies of the family. All of the girls wanted to pamper us like dolls and all of the boys wanted to play with us like pets," Sin explained, not the slightest hint of disdain in his tone.

However, Amarette watched the boy in wonder. He seemed so calm and careless about what he was saying. But sitting right next to him she could feel the stabbing pain that was running straight through him. These were sad memories for him, very sad. And yet he put up an amazing façade, acted as though this was just another story to be told.

Sin smirked at the ocean. "We didn't mind though. However, we did have one sister, Yasuki, who never treated us like possessions. While our other siblings were at classes, or meetings, or whatever, she would talk to us, read to us, and teach us."

Amarette shifted even more uncomfortably. The boy's sadness was growing. She just wanted it to stop..."Do you have a point?" she asked for a second time, more severely now.

The boy's smirk disappeared from his lips and his blue-silver eyes regained their icy gleam. "Long story short, out entire family was slaughtered, Yasuki included. Syth and I just barely managed to escape. We were alone; we had nothing, no one. That's our Hell," he finished and looked up at Amarette. "You can feel that can't you?"

Amarette's response was that of silent shock. She stared with wide eyes at the boy. Was he toying with her?

"My point," he sighed, turning back to the water, "is that you can feel everyone's Hell. Be they human, demon, or even angel. You can feel it. You can feel it and you can help it. That is one of the possibilities of your existence."

She looked at him a moment longer before turning her eyes to the ocean as well. They sat together in silence for a while. Then Amarette shivered as a strong wind blew in from the water.

When suddenly a flame burst to life next to her, it was all Amarette could do to keep from jumping into the air. She stared at the warm light. It was strong and under control by some unseen force.

Sin began to laugh. "You're so jumpy," he said almost apologetically...almost.

"Well excuse me! I'm not used to hanging around with "celestial beings", okay?" Amarette rolled her eyes.

"I am NOT a celestial being!" Sin exclaimed, a notion of disgust written clearly across his young features. "I am a demon. An elemental user for you information."

"Elemental user, huh?" asked Amarette, not very impressed. "So, what, you control fire? Water? Wind?"

Sin kept quiet. She was mocking him, he could tell. Then a thought crept into his devilish mind as well as a matching smile to his lips. He nodded to the waters before them and suddenly a small tidal wave formed and crashed on Amarette's head, drenching her in freezing water.

Amarette yelped in surprise and leapt from the sand. "Oh! Whoa!"

Sin nearly fell over as he busted out laughing. That was better than kicking her!

Amarette calmed down enough to round on the boy. "You! You did that, didn't you, kid?!"

Sin got up from his sitting place by the fire, in much better spirits than he had been in. "My name is not "kid"," was his only response, then he turned his back on her.

Amarette glared at him a moment. "Hey kid!" she hailed, getting him to return his attention to her before shoving Sin backwards into the cold, black water. "Who's laughing now?" she chuckled and began to head back to the house.

Sin recovered from the shock of the water quickly, trudging to shore. He looked around and then summoned a small flame from the small fire. There was no way she was getting off that easy.

Sin blew softly on the little flame, extinguishing it. He grinned in reveling satisfaction when Amarette screamed in shock, as a wall of fire appeared to block her route to the house.

"You're a sore loser, kid!" Amarette yelled over her shoulder to Sin.

"My name is not "kid"," Sin reminded her again, appearing next to her. "And there's no need to shout," he finished, diminishing the firewall.

"Whatever," returned Amarette absently. "By the way, I still don't believe you," she said right before entering the house to run upstairs and lock herself in a room.

"Yes you do, just a little, you do. But in time you'll remember, and then you'll believe," Sin promised as he also entered the house. Then he noticed something. "The stupid bird is gone..." then he smiled and looked outside to the full moon and clear sky. "Well at least someone is enjoying himself tonight," he said as he headed for the library. Might as well get some reading done while waiting up for his brother.

+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+~*~+

This key, that key, all make tinkling melodies...

Sin's eye twitched in his sleep.

Across the ivory notes the fingers play an intricate dance...

Opening one, and then both eyes, the little demon prince looked around. He was in the library and there was a very large book in his lap. In the background, Sin heard the sound of the piano from the music room.

Sin got up, putting his book in his seat, and began to walk towards the music room, stretching and yawning. He knew the melody that was being emanated from the instrument, so he had a very strong suspicion as to whom the culprit was. When he reached the doors of the music room he found his suspicions confirmed as he watched Syth play away on the piano.

Sin refrained from going in however, and just watched his brother. Syth's head was bent in concentration as he sang to the song softly, each note coming out clear and bright. This was one of his only true weaknesses, for Syth only truly loved three things: Sin, his animals, and music.

Halfway through the third verse of the song, Syth's voice grew quiet and he frowned. The words, what were the words? Syth's head snapped up as he got an eerie jolt, hearing a voice nearly identical to his own picking up the song in soft, warm notes. He then smiled as his big brother came over and sat next to him on the bench.

They finished the song finally, Sin's enchanting voice dying away with the last note on the piano. After that they were silent for a while and just sat at the instrument. As they sat there, light gradually crept into the room form the brightening sky behind them.

"What's the matter, Aniki?" Syth finally asked after watching his brother in silence.

"What do you mean?" Sin questioned, puzzled that Syth had seen through him so quickly.

"You usually hate that song. You hate it because Sis taught it to us," Syth stared at Sin with concern.

Sin sighed softly, avoiding his brother's gaze. After a moment he answered, "I was dreaming about her. Guess I felt nostalgic..."

Syth leaned his head on Sin's shoulder gently. "Was I in the dream?'

Sin nodded. "Un. It was about our first public dinner. Do you remember?"

"How could I forget?" Syth asked with a small giggle. "We were better behaved than anyone else. Not to mention I remember having to escape all of the childless duchesses who wanted to smother us." After that he grew quiet and snuggled into his brother's shoulder.

"I'm afraid," Sin confessed suddenly and quietly.

Syth didn't look up. He wasn't really surprised; Sin was so easy to read sometimes. But he wanted to comfort his Aniki. Snuggling closer on the piano bench he asked, "Of what?"

"I'm afraid that we'll fail. That girl, she won't believe. And it's not like we can really explain things clearly. What if we can't get her to remember? What if she does remember and loses herself, or worse yet; what if she goes to the Archangels?" Sin asked helplessly. It wasn't like him to be so open and worried, but he felt that if anyone could understand it would be his brother.

Syth slid his arms around Sin. "It'll be okay, I'm sure it will be. You and I have never failed before. Let's not start now, when so many depend on us."

The twins sat at the piano in the growing light, both silent once more. Soon they heard noises of the strange girl upstairs, attempting to be quiet in her movements.

At this point, Sin was the first to speak, asking, "Do you promise?"

"Huh?" Syth looked up for the first time in a while, but kept his arms around his brother.

"You said earlier that everything will be okay. Do you promise?" Sin asked, turning to Syth with a pleading glint in his normally stony eyes.

Syth smiled comfortingly and hugged Sin. "Everything will be fine," he said, "I promise."
