A scream ripped through the night's stillness, shattering it into a million pieces, startling a flock of birds into flight. Even the beating of their hundreds of wings could not mask that sound of mortal agony.

 

In the clearing below lay the figure of what was formerly a man. Hair, which had once been as golden as the sun was now bleached a stark white, shimmering silver in the waning moonlight. Eyes that had been blue as the sky were now a deep burnished copper, glinting with a hidden fire. From the man's upper lip jutted two small fangs, dripping with saliva as the scream went on and on.

 

Once all the forest creatures had been frightened away, the only witnesses to the man's change was the moon, and a white wolf, which howled mournfully from a nearby hilltop. Eventually the screams deepened into an animalistic howl, and slowly faded into whimpers.
