Archpriest Dostan glared down at the bowed head of the messenger. “What do you mean the second squad failed?” The man trembled visibly and shifted uncomfortably on the flagstone floor.

“They did not meet me at the scheduled rendezvous point upon gaining possession of the personage, nor did they send a message that they were still pursuing said personage. No meeting, and no message means they must be dead.”

Dostan nodded to the guards stationed at the door, and they moved forward to drag the man to his feet. The man looked around wildly. “My lord, what is the meaning of this? I did all that you asked!” Dostan narrowed his eyes and caught the gaze of the messenger like a viper would a small bird.

“You did not bring me the girl. I will not tolerate failure.” He flicked his fingers at the guards, and they dragged the messenger out of the chapel kicking and screaming.

Pulling a bell cord hidden behind the drapes of one window, the Archpriest made his way back to the dais, and seated himself. Shortly a thin shadow slipped into the chapel and knelt at the ArchPriest's feet. Dostan leaned forward and placed a hand on the Ninja's shrouded head.

“Find the girl. Do not encounter anyone. Report her actions back to me.” An unsatisfied gleam filled the black eyes that peered out over the thin slit in the shroud. “Once I have determined the proper course of action, you will bring her to me. Alive. What you do to her on the way here is of no concern to me, so long as she is in my grasp with body and skills fully intact. Understand?”

The unsatisfied glint left the Ninja's eyes, and was replaced with heated anticipation. The Ninja nodded shortly, and was gone in the blink of an eye. Not even a breeze betrayed his departure. Dostan chuckled to himself and could almost pity his former toy. Almost.
