After two hundred years of the best skills backed up by the best of luck, he had to have of known that eventually that luck would run dry. It seemed this was the week that it did.

Now, he’d never minded being blamed for things he didn’t do much; it made people fear him that much more, but this particular assassination was proving to be a sink hole of bad luck for him. He’d lost over half his crew in the first half of the week, his just recently repaired ship in the other half, and now, now, of all things, he was under UGF custody.

Whoever the son of a bitch was that had killed Whinston Gern was going to pay. And Ray only traded in two forms of currency outside of the universal credit. Power and blood.

“Do you think it’s really him?” One of his prison guards whispered loudly to his mate.

Ray didn’t smile, although he was amused. Which was something hard for him to be after having every single weapon on his person confiscated. Even the stuff in his hair, which made it fall a little oddly around the back of his head. He’d never felt like this before. Vulnerable, although not completely defenseless, he wasn’t in the same kind of endless backup weapon situation he usually was.

“Shut up. No talking; remember?” Came the whispered reply.

There was silence for a minute; Ray shifted his feet very slowly, placing them both on the ground. The guards were jumpy- they glanced at him anyway.

“What’s he doing?” The first guard asked again; obviously unable to follow even such simple orders.

“Does it look like I know?” The short reply snapped.

Ray crossed his ankles and leaned back into the wall, lacing his fingers in his lap and closing his eyes.

“Is he sleeping?”

“I don’t think so…”

“Hey, Davey?” The first guard whispered again.

“What?”

“Do you know why the commander wants two guards on him?”

“Think about it, stupid.”

Chapter four. Not a hushed conversation.

I had Ray Nexus put in the most secure, isolated prison on my whole ship.

I set ten guards on him; two right outside his cell, another two at either end of the corridor his cell was in, another two outside the door of the corridor, and the final two in the air vents of his cell. There was a camera in ever corner of the room and my captain of security had strip searched him for weapons.

I had even watched the search; William had gone so far as to run his hands through every strand of Ray’s hair in the search for concealed items. You wouldn’t believe some of the things we found. Stealth cloaking chips, a small laser shield generator, another small generator for something I wasn’t even sure the use of. He had anti-tracking bands around his wrists, a spare clip of bullet ammo around his inner thighs, and the energy sword at his belt I knew to be a priceless antique that he had stolen from the Bejilin king Re’druni eighty years ago. His belt had cans of tear gass, acidic gas, liquid ice; a photon baton under one arm. And in his hair…

A two hundred meter long invisible wire; a pack of explosive gum; anti teleportation discs planted on his scalp; one meter of garrot wire; miniature photon grenades. Collapsible bow-staff (which I had thought to be a twig until William hit the button on the underside and it folded out into a staff). And small sharp blades that weighted his hair, making it able to slice from hitting people.

Now, I could give you the complete list, which I had a copy of sitting on my study desk, but I was still in shock that I’d caught him to think about it all. It was a miracle that he could walk around; just the accumulated weight of everything would make a normal person buckle at the knees.

I was ready to interview him in half an hour. I was just composing myself and getting some questions ready. I had no idea what to start with he had a list of offences so long that it almost covered a whole hard drive.

He started his escape after he had finished pouting. Of course, none of these people could read his expressions, it took a special kind of human to do that, but he was pouting a little like a spoiled brat who’d just had all their fun taken away from them.

First, he hacked into the computer system and started raising the temperature in the cell and surrounding area, three degrees a minute. There was no visible sign of his hacking- he connected remotely using his chromatic eye. There was a reason they were illegal.

Then, after a little while he released some pheromones into the air. He’d had all his weapons confiscated, so he was down to his chromatic eye, natural abilities, and the few defensive items that were undetectable to ninety-eight-point-three forms of detection. Which was the small pheromones capsules under his nails and sleep gas in a slightly more private position.

The guards were shifting back and forth again, obviously starting to feel the heat. Nexus waited until a few more minutes had passed before he very slowly started to undo his suit. Of course, they turned around, hearing the zipper at the back opening.

“What are you doing?” One of them shouted nervously. He hardly needed to shout, Ray was only a few feet away.

“I’m hot, so I’m taking my shirt off. Unless you wanted to do it for me?” he licked his lips, being sure to press his fingers to his chest, letting the liquid pheromones touch his body- a move he would have to wash himself off for later- and smear over his skin. It would look like sweat to the casual observer.

Ray wasn’t terribly good at seducing people, unlike his brother; he couldn’t change his sex to accommodate people’s taste. And he couldn’t fake human emotions to boot.

But he was attractive. Attractive enough that men and women doubted their sexual urges around him. Attractive enough that with the pheromones in the air and the high temperature Davey- who had a wife and kids- was starting to notice how gorgeous Ray’s hair looked all rumpled up. And Ray knew that he could do this to humans. It was a form of power to him. Anything that mattered was power to his mind.

The temperature rose some more, he wasn’t sweating, he could handle much hotter before he started to sweat- unlike the humans, who absently wiped sweat from their eyes. Ray slowly approached the bars, swaying his hips like a woman would. Oh, he knew the hips would catch attention, he knew there’d be a moment of confusion-just there- when they focused on his groin, and then the eyes would unfocus again, looking at his hips, or his hair. Only one in ten men wouldn’t be completely turned off by his groin- the rest tended to deny it, which was why he swayed. The more womanly he looked, the more they let their guard down. Besides, he was so small and so girly looking anyway, what could he possibly be doing?

Ray moaned, slipping his zipper lower and running a hand over his neck, the other through his hair. “Does anyone have some water? I feel like I’m in a desert.”

“No… no… feeding the… prisoner.” One of the men gasped out the words.

Ray pulled his zipper lower, leaning against the bars now and slipping his suit off one shoulder. “Damnit, but I’m so hot!”

“We’re all a little hot…just… oh damnit. John, I’m going on a toilet break.”

“Hey, you can’t leave me here alone!”

“High Councilmen man, it’s an emergency. He’s… fuck… just…” And Davey fled the room.

Ray moaned again, forcing John’s attention back to him. He was close enough now that the pheromones were strong in the air. Even Ray could feel the effect, his groin was tight with artificial desire, and he was in trouble because he had the crap all over his body. He’d never had to do this before. He’d note down the side effects and try and find a different one next time.

“What about you? Anything I can do to get some moisture?” Ray murmured, leaning his forehead against the bars. He didn’t try putting any emotion into his voice; it wouldn’t work anyway, which was what the pheromones were for.

“No…” John yelped; he was moving closer to Ray regardless, gun swinging uselessly around his neck.

Ray moved closer still, twisting his hips like a girl would. “Not for anything?”

John was at the bars now, hands reaching through stupidly to grab at Ray’s body. Ray would have smiled, if he were able, and took the butt of John’s gun, turned it and shot the idiot with it. There was the sound of the photon entering the body at such close range, followed by the thunk of John’s body hitting the ground. Ray quickly pulled the gun through the cell door and waited for anything to move. There was a scratching sound in the vents. Cloth over metal. Ray rolled to the side and fired into the grates.

I was just writing down my third question when I heard the alarm go off. High councilmen! What now? I sighed and turned from my computer, bringing up my phone to the bridge.

“What is it?”

“It’s Ray Nexus, sir! He’s escaped!”

I growled and stood up, slamming my pocket-computer onto the desk and heading for my door, switching the phone to my ear-piece. “Where is he now?”

“He’s… fuck… he’s heading for docking bay eight…”

“What have we got in there?”

“At the moment the small fighters are on standby and repair because of the search for the pirates. There are almost thirty still in the bay.”

“Personnel?” I moaned. How the fuck had he gotten out of his cell?

“Fourty techies, ten pilots… oh fuck, the cameras in the docking bay have been cut.”

“Watch your language private.” I was in the lift, heading up to the bridge, I hit the speed increaser button. “Send four squadrons down to detain him.”

“Only four, sir?”

“No, send six.” I’d seen how fast Nexus could move.

By the time I’d gotten to the bridge, the first squadron had engaged Nexus.

The bridge was a whirlwind of movement. Captain Horus was barking out commands to get the cameras re-established, because they kept going out. The main viewer showed the battle as it happened. Ray Nexus, had two photon guns, one in each hand. He was strafing around a corner, shooting the weapons like he already knew exactly where the guards were, and where their vulnerable points were exposed. And then he’d killed three men and was letting the guns cool for a moment, leaning against the side of the wall. The first squadron was down to one man, who had been smart enough to take decent cover the moment he could.

I watched as the second squad came up from Ray’s rear, grimacing.

Ray’s head whipped around very suddenly and he knelt, facing his rear. Like he could tell they were coming.

Could he hear them? They were still several corridors away.

The screen froze and the techie in charge of it groaned in frustration. “Damnit! What kind of virus is this? It’s like it just keeps coming back!”

I frowned. The techie was quick to get the cameras back. And I saw as Ray quietly snuck up on the one remaining member of squadron one. The muzzle was against the man’s head before he could even blink.

Ray glanced up, looking directly at the cameras; he gave a little salute and blew the guard’s brains out.

“Get those squadrons down there!” I bellowed.

Kill my crew would he?

“Sir! Squadron two have encountered a door that won’t unlock.” William told me from his post.

“Get it open then!”

I found myself digging my nails into the seat-rest as I watched Ray Nexus walk down the hall. He hit the door for the docking bay, gun firing straight into the security officer that had been waiting for him there.

It was all I could do to watch as the bastard casually killed a few more people and hijacked one of the fighters. How the fuck had this happened?

“Sir! The… virus… has…”

Fuck! I slumped, waving a hand for the lieutenant to silence. “Just… let him go.” I sighed.

“But sir!” Horus choked.

“Horus, he’s hacked into the computer, we’ve already lost twelve personnel, and he’s wanted alive. Short of actually killing him… we can’t stop him escaping. We know how to track him. There /will/ be a next time.”
Horus was glaring at me but he wasn’t going to argue.

“Recall the squads. Get the medics down there.”

I watched as Ray Nexus drove /my/ fighter away into space until he left sensor range.

He was going to pay.

Sweet notes: Finally finished this chapter. Heh, go Ray! *Pets him* I know, he’s got an unfair advantage, being the authoress’ favourite. But what am I going to do about it? *le sigh* Reviews?
