“Commander? Do you think that this war will be worse than WWIII?” “Yes, probably will be Sparkey.” I replied. That war lasted 37 years. That was the beginning of the end for the United States. It’s been 3 years since this war began, I thought as I looked away from the window of the spacecraft. We were patrolling around Jupiter because there was supposedly Alphen activity. I looked over at my team; four of the best-trained fighters. Five if you counted me. They were hand picked by my father to be under my command. When we were introduced at first they were skeptical. I mean who wouldn’t have been, I was the daughter of Mr. Falcon and could have had anything handed to me. I had been in military training since I was 16. Now I’m 21. I may have started off young, but it was all worth it. I’m always telling my team that we’re the best, so none of us will die. So far that’s kept them all motivated and alive.

“Commander! I’m seeing explosions to the right of the craft!” Ray’s voice bellowed over the intercom from the control room. We all rushed over and looked out of a window. Sure enough there were explosions, which meant battle. A lump formed in my throat. “Ray are there any distress signals being sent out?!” “No,” he shouted back. “Okay team, Ray you stay here and notify the nearest Falcon base of our location and request backup! As for the rest of us, suit up!” I ordered. We all went back to the cargo room and put on the thin space suits over our clothes. I led the rest of the team to the scorpions (a type of piloted machine). we all got in the cockpit and got ready. “Ray open the hatch!” against the far side of the room, 2 doors opened leading to open space.

I just stood there taking in the site. “Commander, you ready?” “Yeah,” I replied. “Team move out.” “All right let’s rock and roll baby!!! Bring on the Alphens!!!” Sparkey yelled. “Oh please,” Karen murmured under her breath. I always tense up right before a battle, not out of fear, but excitement. I love fighting, that’s what I do, that’s what we all live for. “We all need to stay off of this line and keep all communications to a minimum.”

This war has lasted 3 long years. That may not seem like too long, but at the magnitude that it’s been fought at, most were beginning to think that it would never end. All of the battles were getting longer and extremely intense. There were numerous battles everyday. At this rate, one side or the other is going to have to give in because neither can sustain the casualties. As Sparkey looked out of his window he could actually see the figures firing at one another now. There were about 7 Alphens and 3 Falcons that he could see of.

“Stop,” I whispered. I could hear my heart thumping away in my chest. I watched the Alphens for a moment before we made our final approach and noticed that these soldiers were obviously amateurs. Otherwise they would have known that if their buddy next to them were to get hit and blow up, it would cause a chain reaction. That’s why you were supposed to spread out. “Dirk, do you think that you can take out the 2 on the near right with your blaster?” “Yeah no problem,” he replied in a confident tone while getting out his blaster. “All right, everyone else on a frontal assault.” Karen, Sparkey, and myself began to move forward. “Dirk come and join us when your done with those 2, don’t stay out there and give them a clear shot of you.”

We moved towards the raging battle with Sparkey on my right and Karen on my left. Now there were only 2 Falcons left in the distance. “All right Dirk... take aim,” sweat was dripping from his forehead. “Come on Dirk you can do it,” I whispered. Dirk was the best aim when it came to long range battle, but he still got nervous every time. Then there it was... a bright blue streak heading straight for the Alphens from behind me. It hit the Alphen closest us and exploded taking another one nearby with him. “All right you da man Dirk!” Sparkey yelled. “You know it!” he replied triumphantly. “Like I said... amateurs,” I whispered and moved forward.

The other soldiers just stopped and stared in amazement as we approached. “They’ve got re-enforcements!!!” shouted one of the Alphens. They were suddenly confused on where to point their guns. Afraid to turn their backs on the 2 remaining Falcons, but not daring to disregard us. Dirk stayed behind and destroyed another one with his blaster. “Come on Dirk get your ass up here!!!” I shouted before turning my full attention to the Alphens ahead. We all started firing at the same time.

The Alphens were losing badly and getting desperate and it was only 3 minutes into the battle. There was only 2 left and Sparkey was sword fighting with one of them. “Where’s Dirk,” I whispered. I looked back and there he stood pointing his blaster towards the waging battle.

“What do you think you’re doing Dirk?!! You were ordered to come back when you were done taking out those 2!!!” There was no reply. I gave you a direct order Dirk, now you had better follow it. “No wait just a second Commander, I think I can get one more.” “Karen and Sparkey can handle it now get over here!” But there was no changing his mind, for some reason or another he was determined. He fired his blaster which narrowly missed Karen and the Alphen that she was fighting with. “What the hell!” Karen yelled turning around. Dirk immediately began towards the battle.

In retaliation the Alphen fired back with his magma ray. At that close range Dirk wouldn’t be able to dodge the blast and a direct hit from a magma ray would ensure his death. Before I realized what I had done I jumped in front of the blast.

Space... so empty, so lonely. What’s really out there has been the question of many. And that question has driven so many of us to look for something that simply will never be found, or merely for that of which we’ve looked for, to find us.
