Remus stared. That was all he really did now a days. He stared.
Even poor miserable, mousy Tonks at least blinked. Shifted in her chair, sighed.
Remus just stared.
Molly watched him, thin lipped. She was happy to have him in the house, but she wished he would cheer up... The only time he ever even took his eyes from the fireplace was when someone all but yelled in his ear. Then he would look away, baleful blue eyes waiting, expectantly to see what they wanted.
Most of the time he was left alone.
Fluer liked to talk to him sometimes. Bill joining in. If Charlie happened to show up the two of them had wonderful conversations.
Fred and George even came, with the sole purpose of testing a new joke on him. Not the dangerous or painful jokes, of course. The kind that maybe... if they were lucky, would crack a smile on him.
If they could, the joke was most definitely a moneymaker. Needless to say, not many of their jokes got true smiles out of Remus Lupin.
The members of the Order, tried not to pay him much mind. They knew he was hurting, but all being friends, they worried for him.
Only one person ever had the gall to talk to him about it though.
"Really Lupin, stop your sulking." Snape muttered, as they stood alone in a meeting room, waiting for the other members.
Remus was standing by the window, looking out into the squalid street. Sunlight catching his obscenely long hair. He hadn't bothered to cut it in a long time. The werewolves didn't care how long his hair was, and honestly, neither did he.
He didn't answer Severus though, which served only to annoy the former potions master.
"You and Nymphadora. You're no good when you're moody all the time."
"Oh, Severus..." Remus sighed. "If only you would heed that advice yourself."
Snape narrowed his dark eyes at the werewolf. "I am not the one who sit about sighing all the time."
"That's Tonks." Lupin replied softly. He heard as Snape stalked closer.
"I'm talking about you, Lupin." The smarmy bastard snapped. "Why don't you both just get over yourselves?"
"Because they left me behind, Severus."
The gentle statement threw Snape off balance. He blinked for a moment and looked at Remus, whose head was hanging, and he was hiding behind the curtain of his hair.
"What in blazes are you talking about?"
"James and Sirius..." Remus actually choked. His cool composure broke for a moment, and his shoulders wracked once with one dry sob. "They've left me behind again."
"What are you---"
"First James married Lilly, then he died... Then Sirius went off to Azkaban." Remus whispered, his forehead thunking to the cool glass of the window. "Now they're both dead..."
Severus had never felt so awkward in his entire life. He hated Sirius and James. What did he care where they were! But looking at the shell of a creature before him, he couldn't bring himself to hate Lupin, though he desperately wanted to. He put an arm around the smaller man's shoulder.
"You don't need those prats." He muttered.
Remus looked up at him, pale eyes shimmering imperceptibly.
"They made me human."
"Don't be foolish..." Snape tried to sound snappish again. "You are human."
The blonde shook his head. "Before them I was nothing but a werewolf."
"Not true." Severus sighed in exasperation.
"I---" Remus began, but never finished as Snape pulled him into a full hug. Well, it was an awkward hug... Snape was trying to do it without actually touching Lupin. So he sort of had his arms around him, but his elbows moved out, away from the small werewolf.
"You're one of the... better... humans I know." Severus mumbled grumpily, not looking at Remus. That statement of his wouldn't have meant much... but to Remus... "So, stop moping."
"You're right, Severus." He said quietly. "Thank you."
"Not at all. And if you don't mind, don't mention this to anyone."
"Of course, Severus." Remus smiled.
They pulled apart after that, Snape taking a seat, still waiting for the other members of the Order and Remus turning back to the window.
