Chapter 1

Aoi sat quietly at her desk, waiting for the bell to ring. School was almost over. Only one more hour and then it would be the weekend. She watched as the other kids in her class socialized and talked about their plans for the weekend. Parties, trips, clubs; the whole bit. But Aoi didn't have any plans. She never did. Her plans included staying home alone finishing up homework or watching television. On Sundays she would go to church with her parent, which she loved doing. There, she had some friends, or at least some people she could talk to and they wouldn't laugh at her. Not like at school, where she was constantly picked on by people that had known her since kindergarten. She had never been popular or well liked. Not that anything was wrong with her, but she had just always been in the “loser” category at school. She wore large framed glasses and never talked much. When she was younger, she had had a small speech impairment, and so every time she ever opened her mouth to talk, the other kids would listen attentively until she made a mistake and then they would laugh. She had then become used to not talking, even though since those times her speech had improved and was now perfectly normal.

She never tried to look glamorous like the other girls did. She was very plain. Her glasses circled her big, deep blue eyes. She wore her long ears back in low pigtails, and no make up. She wore the green and white sailor style school uniform with a short plaid skirt.

Before long, the bell rang and the class filed out into the locker-lined hallway. Aoi walked out, clutching her books in her arms across her chest. Before she had walked very far, she heard her name called from down the hallway. She froze in her tracks. It was him…it was his voice. She cringed in fear as she heard him walk closer.

“Oh no! God, no! Please not him…” she silently prayed.

She felt him come up behind her and lean into her ear and hiss,

“Hello, Aoi. How have you been?”

She turned for a moment to face him. He wore the black pants and tie-less shirt that all boys wore at school. His fur was dark brown and his eyes glistened a beautiful hunter green. He had a grip on her uniform at the shoulder. She yanked herself free and began to walk away,

“Leave me alone, Midori-kun.”

He smirked, “Well, well, well! Looks like the little mouse is learning how to talk!”

She kept walking, trying her best to ignore him. Suddenly, one of his friends ran in front of her, knocking her books from her hands, sending papers flying all over the hall floor.

“Better hurry and get your crap cleaned up, Aoi. You wouldn't want to be late for class.”

Midori said as he and his friend walked away laughing. Aoi stood in silence and watched them until they turned the corner. She knelt down and started picking her things up off the floor. Kids walked around her and her things, some stepping on the papers. But no one stopped to help.

The next hour dragged on. Aoi sat in class, taking notes and listening attentively to the sensei. When the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Aoi snuck quickly out and quickly made her way to the rack where he bicycle waited. If she could hurry home then she wouldn't have to face Midori. She unlocked the lock that held the bike in place, hopped on, and began pedaling away from school.

It had rained just the day before and scent of rain was still in the air. The ground was still a bit muddy, but the sky was now clear and the weather was beautiful. Aoi adored nature as she rode home by herself.

She rounded the corner onto her street, but quickly came to a stop as she saw Midori and his group of friends standing around on her front lawn. She jumped off her bike and behind a bush. The bike hit the street and made a loud crash. She shrunk behind the bush, hoping maybe they didn't hear it. She was scared to death of Midori. He was the meanest of all the kids that picked on her. They had been going to the same school since kindergarten and now they were 2nd years in high school and he had always been the cruelest to her. She had learned to not let his words hurt her anymore, but he still humiliated her by knocking her things out of her hand or tripping her in front of people. Every time she tried to do something to him it had been thrown back in her face. Pretty soon, she stopped talking to him or trying to get him back for things he did to her. She avoided him most of the time. But why was he at her house?

Midori turned his head at the sound of the bike. He saw it sitting in the street and chuckled. He began walking over to it. Aoi tried to not make any sounds, she even stopped breathing for a minute. Midori leaned over the bike and inspected it.

“Why, what luck! I needed a new bike!” he laughed.

Midori picked up the bicycle and lifted it over his shoulder. As he turned to walk away Aoi jumped out of the bushes,

“Ah…please don't take my bike.”

“I'm sorry! Is this yours?” he asked sarcastically.

She shyly nodded. Midori's friends laughed at her shy gestures.

“Here.” Midori said, tossing Aoi her backpack that had been on the bike. She winced as it hit her in the stomach, but she caught it.

“Hey, Mouse!” one of Midori's friends called, “You'd better hurry and get home to your mommy unless you want to `hang' with us tonight!!!”

Midori laughed and dropped the bike over into some mud. She ran and picked it up and started running to her house. The group of kids laughed at her.

“Yeah! Go on and run home!!!”

“See you at school. Jajauma!”

And they left.

Aoi slowly walked her bike up and leaned it against her house and walked inside. She wiped the dirt off her clothes that she got from hiding behind the bush. She sat up and walked into the kitchen.

“Welcome home, Aoi!” her mother chimed, “How was school?”

“Oh, no different.”

Her mom walked up and kissed her forehead. “I hope it was good.”

Aoi quickly shrugged. “I've got some homework. Call me for supper.”

“Okay, sweetie.”

“Hello, Aoi!” A deep voice called from the living room.

“Hello, Daddy.”

Her home was so warm and welcoming. It was only her and her parents, but she loved it. Her father was an architect and her mom was a teacher in primary school. They were always around, and Aoi loved having two smiling faces to come home to after such terrible days at school.

Aoi dragged herself into her room and collapsed on the bed. Why was Midori so mean to her? She almost started crying, but decided to get her mind off of it and started her homework.

“Good morning, Aoi!” her mother greeted her that Saturday morning.

“Huh? Oh, mornin' mom,” she mumbled.

“What would you like for breakfast?”

“Um…I dunno. Scrambled eggs.”

“Sure. You got sit on the couch and I'll have it done in just a few minutes.”

Aoi walked sleepily over the couch and collapsed. She watched cartoons on the television until her mom brought her a big plate of eggs. Aoi smiled up at her mom.

“Thank you!”

“If you don't mind,” her mom said, walking back to the kitchen, “I need a few things from the store, you wouldn't mind going after you're finished would you? I would go, but your father's not feeling too well, and I don't want to leave him here alone.”

Aoi gulped, “Um, sure. I'll go.”

She took her time finishing the eggs, thinking maybe if she took long enough, her father would suddenly be okay and her mom could go to the store herself. Alas, her ingenious plan failed. She got dressed in casual clothes and got the money from her mom.

“Okay, bye mom. Love you!”

“Be careful riding your bicycle across the street.”

“That's the least of my worries,” she mumbled under her breath.

Aoi got on her bicycle and rode down the street to the local grocery store.

“Well, so far so good. I haven't seen anyone from school,” she said aloud to herself. She propped her bike against the wall behind a coke machine and ran inside. “The faster I get it done, the sooner I'm back home.”

Aoi found all the things she was sent to the store to find. Just some milk, some ramen noodles, salmon and rice. (yum!) And then she headed back out to her bike. She checked the perimeter.

“Looks safe and sound!” she said, piling the groceries on the back. “Home is only a few minutes away, maybe I'll make it back safe.”

Coasting her way down the street, Aoi started to daze off, daydreaming off in her own little world (Like everyone does at some time or another) when a dog ran in front of her in the road. She swerved and hit the curb, flying off the bicycle and landing in the dirt.

“Just my luck…I work hard all day to avoid trouble and I bring it on myself.”

She looked up at her bike. The groceries were all over the ground.

“Oh no! Mom's food!”

She turned to get up, but something caught her eye. It was off in the trees. A shine…the sun's reflection off of something in the distance. She got up and decided to go see what it was before she went on home. As she neared the object, she noticed it was an iridescent purple and pink. It sat in a tree between two limbs. Aoi reached up and grabbed it. She was surprised to find a rock. A shiny stone, no different from any other shiny thing. But it was a little different; she'd never seen one like it, anyway. So she kept it.

“I hope no one minds.”

She glanced around and saw no one, she did see, however, the mailbox to the house of the yard she was standing in. It said “Hiroyuki.”

Hiroyuki! That's Midori's last name!”

Suddenly filled with fear that he might be watching her from any of the trees, she ran back to her bike. She quickly picked up the groceries and sped home.

That night, Aoi sat in her room on her bed and looked the stone over.

“There's nothing special about it, but it is so pretty!”

She set it on her nightstand. Then she picked up her Bible.

“Hmm, what to read tonight?”

Closing her eyes, she let it drop open and she pointed to a spot on the page. It was Psalms 5, and she began reading:

1Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. 2Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. 3In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation…11But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.”

She smiled. She shouldn't be so afraid of him…God was protecting her. She knew that.

With that, she turned out the light and turned over to go to sleep. From behind her sleeping head, the purple stone began to glow.
