To Remember...

A Xenogears Fanfic By Rune Grey

Disclaimer: I own none of these characters... I simply have the pleasure of drawing inspiration from such an exceptional game. As always... there are some spoilers in this story.

Mother...

What a twisted, convoluted term. It used to mean something to me... my mother loved me once, cared for me as her angel that would fulfill all of her hopes in the world. The worthy heir to my father, who worked hard to build us a life that we would love, that we would enjoy. But then I lost one 'Mother' for another, and in the end my world shattered... destroyed under the pressure of torture that few men, let alone one lonely child crying out for anyone to help him, could have endured...

What is it that twisted it? What is the constant abuse that we saw everyday in the streets of our town? The way Solaris raped the land, destroyed the very spirit of the people, without even allowing us to realize that we were fighting a losing battle? The fact that Solaris, the 'Mother' country of this world, had deemed its erroneous children to be anathema, fit only for slave labor and experimentation? That they dubbed us as 'Lambs', creatures to be guided and lead to the slaughter?

It was something else as well... the title of 'Mother' tore me from the one I loved most in the entire world. Sunshine and starlight, she was... perfect. 'Sophia' would become a symbol to the people, a symbol of hope and freedom that would inspire them to fight against Solaris. I saw that beautiful person, but unlike the rest of the populace, even Krelian, I could see the hidden pain behind her eyes as she lead the people. That each day a little more weight was being added to her shoulders, until one day she would break under the strain. But as long as she was 'Mother Sophia' she was above me, a simple painter who rode into battle alongside the leader Krelian, to hero Roni, the bravo Rene... always in the shadow of another, always wishing that you would smile upon me just one more time. That smile that made my world feel complete, yet tore it apart at the same time as I looked upon it... until I looked upon it for the last time.

Elly wanted to be a mother as well... wanted to be one more than anything else. But once again, that was taken from us by arrogant swine who believe that power and prerogatives were worth more than the happiness of a million people. That the ability to take life was more precious than the ability to give it... And in that arrogance, they took from Elly the one thing all of our science would ever be able to repair. And in the end, when we both managed to overcome even that obstacle with the creation of our daughter, they took her life. 'For the good of the people and the cause', they came for Emeralda, and in doing so they took the only thing I could never give her back... her life.
Mother...

'Miang'. The system that exists to guide mankind through the generations to our pre-destined path when we were to become one with our god. In both a symbolic and literal way, Miang was our mother. In the beginning, she gave birth to us, breathed the life into our flesh at the cost of her own being to allow us to flourish on this planet. And through the generations she guides us through history to ensure that we behave like good little children, living and dying when we are told. My nemesis. My love. My existence.

The dreams of men called Lacan, Kim, and Abel... to each of them the term 'Mother' had different meaning. All of them had cursed it in one way or another, seeing it as part of the misery of their existence. All of them repeated the tragedy of life time and again, finding that perfect love and losing it to the dreams and ambitions of others. None of them realizing the consequences of their ordained fates until far too late. Only realizing their power when Elly lay on the ground, the last of her life flickering away as she passed to another generation.

I have 'Father' to thank for helping me to avoid that fate so far. Father... Khan. Father... Wiseman.

Father... Grahf.

Through the loss of one Contact's sanity, he granted me the power to prevent fate from repeating itself once again.

Lacan's obsession with power transformed me, in ways that were often painful, into something different than what I was. 'Father' and 'Mother' fractured my mind, throwing my very being into chaos. And now... I am whole. And perhaps I am stronger for the break.

In the beginning, I was alone. And now, in the end, I must be alone as well. For my universe has always been one other person. Despite how she may have come into being, we have laughed, lived, loved, and lost so many times that it is no longer quite possible to know where one of us ends and the other begins.

This time Elly, 'Mother', I won't let you go alone. I will follow you to the depths of space, the ends of the earth, and the lights of the netherworld to be with you. For the first time, I have to means, the power to save you.

No matter what happens, no matter what the price, I'll never leave you again.

Because you are everything to me...

'Mother'...
