Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Heart of the Realm ( Chapter 12 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Aurora yanked her arm free and was about to reply to Alex’s retort, but a sudden change on Alex’s face caused her to stop. Even though the rain had stopped, water still fell across Alex’s cheeks. Aurora tried to look at Alex’s eyes, but couldn’t see much due to his overlapping hair. “Are those tears, or just the rain water?”
“Crying never helped anyone. Tears are a sign of weakness, therefore I have no use for them,” Alex replied coldly.
Aurora took a deep breath before angrily continuing. “If they were tears, no one would consider you weak because you miss the one you love. Seeing as how you have no need for tears, I guess you have no need for love either. The only reason I came out here to get you is because I knew that’s what Brittany would do. Hell, she’d have drug you back inside whether you wanted to or not!”
“Don’t even make me laugh by trying to compare yourself to her,” Alex replied in a voice as cold as death. Aurora took a step back as a cold chuckle left Alex’s lips. “No one, no one, could ever be like her.”
“No ones trying to be like her. Everyone here is just trying to make sure that you don’t do anything stupid!”
“I can no longer sense her presence.”
“That doesn’t matter, what matters is...wait...what did you say?” Aurora asked, taken back by his sudden change of topic.
Alex sighed and turned his back to Aurora. He continued to survey the deep ravine as he explained the meaning behind his words. “Even after she died, I still felt connected to her. It was as if a part of her soul was merged with mine. At first I didn’t understand why I felt that, but now I believe it was due to the magic of the necklace I gave her.”
“So is that why you thought you could bring her back with necromancy, because you could still feel her presence?” Aurora asked, unable to comprehend why Alex was suddenly telling her this.
“Yes, for the first few days I couldn’t bear to look away from her. I could still feel her beside me, and I was afraid that if I looked away, I might lose any chance of getting her back. It was then that it hit me, if I could still sense her spirit, then maybe I could use necromancy to bring her back to life. Even I don’t know the full powers of the necklace that Alcadan created. He never would tell me what all it could do. All he told me was that no matter what happened, if I gave it to the woman I loved, we would be connected forever.”
Aurora suddenly saw Alex’s action’s in a whole new light. At first she had believed him to be simply overreacting to her death. Who wouldn’t want a chance to bring their love back to life? She knew Brittany’s death had been Hell on his mind and body, but to be able to still feel the one you love, that was torture upon his very soul.
She looked towards the ground and bit her lower lip, trying to decide whether or not she should press Alex for more answers. A part of her felt that she shouldn’t pry into the matters of his heart, but another part of her sensed that Alex wouldn’t tell her unless he needed to. When she had finally gained enough courage she asked, “Can you still feel her?”
“No, after the mages left I went up to my room. When I did, it was like a void suddenly appeared in my heart. The part that Brittany’s presence use to occupy just simply vanished. It was like a part of my soul got ripped out leaving nothing but emptiness. I still can’t feel her, I can’t feel anything now. It’s like I used to be complete, but now that a part’s missing, my soul is desperately seeking to find that missing piece.”
The wind picked up again, blowing the leaves around them and moving Alex’s hair from his face. The moment Aurora got a good look at Alex’s face she felt warm tears begin to fill her eyes. Alex’s eyes were red from tears, his entire face was wet from where tears continually streamed down his face. Alex noticed the change in Aurora’s expression and quickly tried to wipe the tears from his face. Alex wiped the tears away with one hand, only to have more take their place. His face was soon red from where he had tried to wipe away the seemingly never ending trail of tears. Finally he turned his head and roughly snapped at Aurora.
“Quit looking at me like that!”
“Looking at you like what?”
“With pity in your eyes! I already told you, I don’t need your pity!” Alex roared. Even as he did so the wind began to howl and pick up speed once more.
Aurora locked eyes with Alex for only a moment, but that moment seemed to last for a lifetime. Aurora gasped as waves of emotions washed over her. Each one was stronger than the first, each one expression a different emotion. The winds seemed to interact with each new wave, growing stronger by the second, matching the intensity of the emotions. Aurora was almost knocked over by the emotions that flooded her mind and soul. She didn’t realize what was happening until a thought entered her head.
I miss her, and nothing I can do will ever change the fact that she’s gone. She is lost to the darkness while I am living to join the darkness. Now, this pain, these emotions that hurt worse than eternal scars, I shall lock them away. A Devil has no use for emotions, not when they only cause you pain.
Aurora looked back at Alex, falling to one knee as she did so. Her eyes glazed over, and for a second she felt as if she was about to pass out. Finally, she managed to find her voice amidst the chaos that surrounded her. “You keep everything locked inside. All your emotions, all your pain. There’s so much pain and sadness inside of you. More than I or anyone else even realized. No wonder the world weeps. It is because someone who deserves happiness, does not cry even though they should. The heart of the world is crying because you won’t!”
“What did you say?” Alex asked in a soft but harsh tone.
Aurora’s face was full of confusion as she looked at him. She shook her head, unable to remember why she had just said what she had.
Before Alex could question her further, a familiar black form came crashing through the forest.
“Aurora!” Shadow called. He landed beside her and pulled her into an embrace. Aurora was trembling lightly in Shadow’s arms, and Shadow raised and accusing look at Alex. “What happened to her?”
“I don’t know. She suddenly just collapsed. She was muttering something, but it didn’t make sense,” Alex stated. He turned his back to them and stared into the darkness. “The heart of the world is crying.”
Shadow’s ears perked up at Alex’s words. Even though Alex had whispered them, Shadow’s keen ears were still able to hear them. “What does that mean?” Shadow asked roughly. It was apparent that he still was upset about the way Aurora was acting and that he blamed Alex for it.
“It’s nothing, just something Aurora said before she passed out.”
“It seems the death of your mate has affected you more than you care to realize,” a voice said from behind the trio.
Alex and Shadow both turned to face the mysterious voice. Both instantly tensed at the unseen threat and were ready to fight if a fight is what the person was looking for. Alex couldn’t see the person to whom the voice belonged to, but he could sense powerful magical energies being emitted from the person. Out of the corner of his eye Alex saw Shadow start to lower the unconscious form of Aurora towards the ground, readying himself in case of attack.
“Shadow, break your stance,” Alex ordered.
Shadow looked at Alex with confusion. “Why?”
“Do not leave your mate unprotected!” Alex answered with much more emotion than he had originally planned. Shadow was shocked by Alex’s sudden outburst, by nodded in reply understanding where he was coming from. Alex returned Shadow’s nod and turned back towards the woods. “If it’s a fight this bastard’s looking for, he sure as Hell picked a bad time to test my patience.”
“I did not come here seeking a fight. I actually came as more of a bearer of advice and knowledge,” the voice replied.
Alex saw a man step out of the woods. The man was wearing grey robes and had spiky red hair and emerald green eyes that sparkled with mischief. Alex glared at the mage before him, easing his stance only slightly before speaking to him. “What are you doing here Raza?”
“As I said before, I am here to give you some helpful advice. I have no intention of fighting with you,” Raza said softly.
“For a man who claims he doesn’t want to fight, you sure are prepared for one. If you didn’t want to fight, how come you’re wearing demon bone armor beneath your robes?” Shadow questioned.
Raza was unfazed by this question. His gaze never once faltered as he locked eyes with Alex and answered. “You have sharp eyes Shadow. I wore this, because I didn’t know whether or not I would be welcomed as friend or foe. Seeing how our earlier encounter turned out, I felt it would be best if I prepared for anything.”
“Why did you come out here? What is it that your master wanted you to tell me?” Alex asked, growing more irritated by every passing second.
“First off, my master, as you call him, did not send me. I came of my own free will. I came in part, because I felt something that I had never felt before. Something that by all rights should never even be able to happen.”
“What are you babbling on about?”
“There was something my grandfather told me long ago. At the time I believed it to be nothing more than an old wife’s tale, but now I’m starting to wonder if what he told me was actually true,” Raza mused. “You see, it is said that every world has a heart of its own. It beats to own beat and thus dies when the world dies. It would take either a being with great power, or a being with great emotions to affect the heart of the world.”
“What does this have to do with anything? If you’re going to waste my time with foolish nonsense I’d suggest for your own well being you get the Hell out of my sight!”
“This has everything to do with everything, of that, I can assure you,” Raza calmly stated, undaunted by Alex’s wrath. “When I first sensed the sudden change in the weather, I also sensed a very strong magical and ethereal energy being emitted from this spot. I knew that as the Demon Lord you had great power and great potential, but I had no idea how much until this very night. That girl right there must have some of the abilities of a medium to do what she did. She not only could sense the world’s pain, but she was able to somehow connect with the feelings of your dearly departed.”
“Wait, are you saying Aurora somehow channeled Brittany’s sprit into her?” Shadow asked confused by all that was happening. He looked down at the still unconscious form of Aurora and then back towards Raza.
“I’m not sure exactly, but one thing is clear,” Raza said focusing his attention back on Alex. “For a moment, when you had lost all hope once again, you believed Aurora to be Brittany. It was in that moment that the storm subsided. You forbid yourself to feel any emotions, thus all your pent up emotions that you deny to express, channel themselves onto other things. You first channeled them into the heart of this world, hence the reason the storm bent to your will. Then, when you were angry with Aurora, you channeled your emotions into her. Although I have no idea how this happened, it did.”
“That makes no sense. Channeling emotions into people, a heart of this world? All that is nothing more than foolish talk. There is no heart of a world and the fact of channeling emotions into something is sheer lunacy!”
“Maybe Torin was right. Maybe that girl is better of dead than being with a stubborn monster like you,” Raza said coldly.
“What did you say?” Alex roared. He took a step towards Raza, who was smiling brightly as the wind began to pick up speed once more and the sound of thunder could be heard in the distance.
“I was saying, you and this world are connected. Your heart and the heart of this world beat to the same tune. Therefore your emotions seem to affect the physical aspects of this world. Evidently the tragedy of your mate’s death affected all of you more than you first realized.”
“So you came all this way just to tell me that. Now you’ve not only wasted your time but mine as well.”
