Alex honestly didn’t have an answer to Brittany’s question. Sure, he could kill humans with ease in his human form, but evidently people could recognize him in that as well. Anyone who lived within this realm knew his demonic form, so that too, was out of the question. Alex didn’t know what to tell Brittany, but when he looked up to inform her of that he saw that she was looking around the room. Alex was afraid of her reaction to all the carnage he had caused, but instead she seemed not to notice it. It wasn’t until her eyes fell upon the dead body of Senka that her eyes lit up with excitement.
“That’s it!” Brittany exclaimed with joy.
Alex raised his eyebrow in question, wondering how Senka’s dead corpse could help them. Alex’s look of confusion must have given away the fact that he didn’t follow Brittany’s lead. She shook her head and laughed.
“You really are hopeless without me, aren’t you?” Brittany said with a giggle.
Alex chuckled softly and ran his right hand through his hair. “I guess I am. I’m almost afraid to ask, but I guess I better had. So, what’s going on inside that head of yours?”
Brittany feigned an expression of hurt before gliding over towards the body of Senka. As Alex watched her glide over, her feet never touching the ground, Alex’s heart felt heavy once more.
That’s right, she’s still nothing more than an apparition of herself. For a moment, heh, here I am dreaming about things that will never come true. At least, they won’t come true unless I continue what I have started. The more I look at her, the more I know I cannot go another day without having her beside me. How I’ve lasted this long is both a miracle and a mystery to me.
Brittany stopped and turned to look at Alex. As if she could sense what he was thinking she smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry so much Alex. You’ve got enough to worry about, without worrying about me. I’m fine as I am right now, just make sure not to forget about me okay.”
“Heh, how in the world do you think I could forget about you,” Alex replied. A tinge of sadness in his voice.
Brittany floated towards him and craned her neck so that she could look him in the eyes. “Hey, no sad faces okay. I saw enough of those the day I died. You don’t have to pretend to be strong around me Alex. I know you’re hurting. Remember, I can feel your pain. Still, as long as you do what you’re doing, the pain will only last a little longer. Only a little longer until we’ll be together again. Only a little longer till the pain will end.”
Alex nodded, but still couldn’t get rid of the feeling of dread that had captured his heart. When he looked back up at Brittany, he saw she was standing beside Senka’s body. Alex raised his eyebrow as she giggled with childish eagerness. “Okay, it’s a body. What’s so special about it?”
“The fact that this is the answer to your problem. Listen, regardless of who they are, they will recognize you if you go into your full demonic form, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Well then just don’t go into your demonic form. Stay in your human form no matter what okay? You should be okay, if you stay in your human form right?”
“Yes, but there’s still a chance that they might recognize me in my human form now. If it hadn’t been for the incident with the second battle against Scion I would be safe in my human form. Now however, there’s a good chance they might recognize me in it as well.
“Well, in that case all you have to do is conceal your face,” Brittany replied. Alex watched as she motioned towards the black wrappings around Senka’s face. “A mask like this would do well, wouldn’t you think?”
Alex’s eyes widened at the realization that her idea might actually work. Alex walked towards the deceased form of Senka. He examined Senka’s mask and after what seemed like an eternity, smiled with approval.
Alex looked at Brittany and nodded. “It shall do.”
Brittany beamed brightly at Alex’s words, but her mood suddenly changed. Her face became full of sadness, and before Alex could ask her what was wrong she looked at him and said. “I love you Alex, goodbye.”
Alex instantly became alarmed at her words and quickly wondered what was happening. “What do you mean goodbye? What’s going on?”
“I’ve got to go Alex. They’re calling me back. I can only speak with you for a little while. I must go now, but I promise I’ll come back to you soon,” Brittany said through tears.
“Wait, who’s calling you back. I don’t understand!” Alex shouted.
Brittany only shook her head sadly before starting to fade out from Alex’s view. “Please, don’t forget me Alex. Hurry, and bring me back as soon as you can. I will always love you.”
Before Alex could reply, Brittany disappeared within a blinding light. Alex tried to shield his eyes from the light, but the radiance of it was too overwhelming. Alex backed away from it, but in doing so he tripped over something and landed squarely on his back.
Alex opened his eyes slowly, looking out to make sure the blinding light was gone. He couldn’t explain it, but for some reason he felt extremely groggy. His mind worked slower due to this grogginess, but he quickly recalled what had just happened. He stood up and looked around the room, searching for any sign of Brittany. Just as he predicted, and as he feared, she was gone.
Alex rubbed the back of his head which was slightly sore from where he fell. There’s no way that was all just a dream. It was way too real, and way too creepy to be a dream.
Alex’s eyes fell upon the body of Senka and a cruel smile fell upon his lips. He walked towards Senka’s body and quickly began unwrapping Senka’s mask. The moment he was through unwrapping the mask Alex stared at Senka’s face for the first time. Senka’s black fur was matted with blood, his eyes were locked in a lingering gaze, and his mouth was fixed in a fulfilled smirk.
“Heh, that’s too dignified a pose for someone such as yourself. I’ll have to fix that for you,” Alex said coldly. He threw Senka’s face wrap, around his neck before starting to work on Senka’s body. Alex didn’t know why he was doing what he was. The body was dead, what was the use of damaging it further? Yet, despite this, he continued toiling away until he was satisfied.
Alex wiped the blood off his hands and then turned his attention back on the face wrap. Alex took off of his neck and held it in his hands. “Don’t worry Britt, I won’t forget about you. Soon, soon, we will be together. All I have to do is keep doing what I am doing, then we will be together.”
Had Alex been able to gaze upon himself at the moment he placed the wrap around his head, even he would’ve shuddered at the look upon his face. It was neither the face of the compassionate Alex, nor was it the face of the blood thirsty Razriel. The look on Alex’s face was not fitting for man nor demon.
As Alex finished the last wrap he felt as if an immense weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. Alex’s body began to shake, and with it, Alex began to laugh uncontrollably. His laugh filled the inner chamber of the cave. His voice echoed through the halls, and the humans who were hiding within the catacombs knew that, that, was the laugh of a Devil.
When Alex finally stopped laughing he smelled the air for the scent of the humans. He smiled, his fangs glinting within the darkness of the cave. “They once called me a Devil, and feared me for what I could do. Now they will call me a Devil and fear me for what I am going to do.”
Alex then turned and walked towards the back part of the cave, allowing the scent of the humans to guide him to his prey. Parts of his white hair flowed loosely beneath the black head wrap, but at this point it mattered little to him. He continued farther into the cave, until finally he stood in front of the entrance to the catacombs. He could smell the humans, they weren’t that far away. As he neared their hiding spot he could hear their frantic heartbeats, beating faster with every step he took.
Alex stood in front of the door the humans were behind. He knew that they were cowering like dogs. Each one fearing for his own life. Each one knowing that their own personal Angel of Death was coming for them. Each one, just now accepting the fact that their lives were about to end.
Alex tried to contain the chuckle that was working its way up his throat. Without a second thought to the matter, Alex slammed his fist into the door. The door shattered on impact, and Alex casually walked in to where the humans were. Twelve pairs of eyes were upon him. At first, due to the lack of light, when they saw the head wrap they thought it was Senka coming to save them. They were quickly corrected about their thoughts when Alex spoke.
“It’s time for you to die,” Alex said in a low raspy voice.
Even at the entrance of the cave, the sounds of screaming could be heard coming from within. The voices of several men were crying out, each one being silenced within a matter of seconds. Then, just as suddenly as the screaming began, it ended in deathly silence. A few moments later Alex walked out of the cave. He still wore Senka’s face wrap, and now he was carrying his bag over his shoulder once more. Alex looked towards the rising sun and smirked.
“Good, now towards the Central Realm.”
