“Soul reapers. Zanatos had claimed that he had captured some for some reason. He said that the mages helped him to do it, because naturally he couldn’t catch ethereal creatures like that. I had heard that he sealed them into two large statues to guard some very important treasure. I’m guessing that these are the statues that he was talking about,” Rain informed them.
“What, soul reapers!” Raza exclaimed in disbelief. How could that be? Soul reapers are from the Celestial Realm. They shouldn’t be here in the Demon Realm. The only way Zanatos could’ve gotten soul reapers is if someone from the Celestial Realm allowed them to come here, but who would do that? Unless there was some reason they did this. This is a powerful artifact, one that shouldn’t have been made. That alone is something to question, but for now it works in our advantage. I’ll have to talk to Zemnas about all of this, but for now that I know what kind of creatures they are, I can tell Alex the secret to beating them!
Raza watched as more and more of the stone got chipped away by the blades of darkness. He also saw more and more blood begin to drip from Alex’s arms. There were several wounds on his arms already, but now there were some on his chest as well, and blood was dripping from his lips. “Alex, stop the spell!”
“It’s working...don’t worry, I can handle it,” Alex replied in a strained voice.
“No, there’s another way. Trust me, you don’t want to destroy the statues. If you do you’d be facing something worse than these giants. Listen, I now know how to defeat them!”
Alex looked back at Raza, then back at the statues. He nodded and removed his hands from the ground, which ended the rain of blades that had been assaulting the stone giants. “I sure as Hell hope you’re not joking.”
“No, those things you are fighting are statues that have been infused with soul reapers. Soul reapers are very powerful beings that are used in controlling the souls of people who were consumed by evil. But first and foremost, they are collector’s of souls. They will hunt the ends of the earth until they have found the soul they are looking for. In this case, the only way to make them stop attacking you is to offer them a soul,” Raza declared.
“Wait, but that would mean someone would have to die wouldn’t it?” Shadow asked.
“Well, technically yes,” Raza admitted
“You’re not telling us that Alex has to die are you? If he does, what would be the point of him getting the dagger in the first place?” Aurora asked, outraged that Raza could even suggest something like that.
“Someone has to die. You have to remember that it was Scion who put all of this into place. He wouldn’t have minded sacrificing a life or two to get this item when the time came. Yet, the fact remains that he was a necromancer. Which means he could summon the souls of the dead if he so wished. Isn’t that right, Alex?”
Alex stood perfectly still as he reverted back to his human form. Everyone could feel the dramatic change in energy levels as Alex quit using the power of the crystals. His white hair covered his face, so no one could tell what he was going through his head. “What will happen to the souls if the soul reapers take them?”
“Don’t worry, they will be taken back to the Celestial Realm where they were supposed to go in the first place,” Raza assured him.
Alex nodded and knelt on one knee. The giants once again started moving toward Alex, getting ready to attack him. Alex placed his hand on the ground and said one more spell. “Tamashii no ano shindeiru kuru se ni watashi. No tame ni watashi setto anata jiyu!”
A light green colored portal opened beneath his hand. The portal looked like water, with the green light swirling around with the darkness. Alex looked up at the two giants before him. His face a cold mask. “You want the souls of the dead. Fine, you can have them,” Alex looked down at the portal and closed his eyes. “Go, be free. Go now to the place where you were supposed to have been!”
Several light green apparitions floated out of the portal. Everyone could only stare in awe and wonder as the room became filled with the screams of the dead. The green light gave the dark room and even more eerie appearance. The stone giants halted the instant the souls appeared. Both of their mouths opened at once, and immediately the souls were being drawn toward them. The souls were being absorbed by the soul reapers inside the statues the instant they disappeared through the stone mouths of the giants. After all the souls were gone Alex removed his hand from the ground, instantly dispersing the eerie green light. He looked up at the stone giants, glad to see that they had stopped any attempts to attack him. In a flash of light the stone giants crumbled to dust, and Alex heard the door behind him unlock.
Alex looked up at Raza. “What just happened?”
“You have not only freed the souls that you had taken, but also the captured soul reapers. Both of which are now returning to the Celestial Realm where they belong,” Raza told him. He then motioned to the door behind Alex. “Go now, and claim your prize.”
Alex slowly turned toward the door behind him. He could se the faintest light, glowing through the slim crack in the door. He hesitantly reached for the handles of the door, looking back to see Shadow and Aurora jump off the balcony and landing on the floor below with him. Alex realized the barrier around the balcony must have been made to keep Scion safe from the giants until he they absorbed some souls. He watched as Raion, carrying Raza, jumped off the balcony as well.
Alex took a deep breath before finally pulling the door open. A bright flash of light momentarily blinded Alex, the instant the door was opened. After the light subsided, Alex peered into the room behind the door. Their, mounted on a pedestal, and either by magic or by the powers of the dagger itself, it was being suspended in mid-air by some unseen force. Alex made sure the check the room before entering it. Fully aware that Scion could have laid one more final trap before someone could claim the dagger as their prize. Much to his relief, he couldn’t detect any visible signs of any traps inside the room. With that in mind, he slowly made his way toward the dagger.
With trembling hands he reached for the white polished handle and a surrounding gold finish. The moment his fingers touched the handle, he felt the blade pulsate at his touch. It was as if the blade had been waiting for him, and just by touching it he had awoken it from its centuries old slumber. Alex grabbed hold of the handle and pulled the dagger toward him. Once he did, he noticed that the blade was far from ordinary as well. Instead of just having one single blade jutting out from the handle, it had seven other miniature blades jutting out from the original one as well. Alex could tell, just by holding the dagger, that it did indeed hold an awesome power.
When Alex exited the room carrying the dagger loosely in his hand. He held it out in front of him as if he was afraid of it, yet at the same time he knew that he couldn’t be, because this was his only hope at being able to see Brittany again. Alex looked at Raza with nervous eyes. “So this is it, huh?”
Raza nodded slowly. “Yes, that is the dagger of fate.”
“So what exactly do I have to do with it?”
“You have to trust that it’ll take you to the Celestial Realm. That, and you have to have trust someone to stab it into your heart. Once it has been in lodged in your heart, you must focus on nothing but your love for Brittany. Do you understand?”
Alex nodded and grasped the dagger tighter. He then turned to Shadow. “I have to have someone I trust wield this dagger. That is why, I want you to do it. Here, take it.”
Alex handed the dagger out to Shadow, but Shadow quickly raised his hands up and shook his head. “Wait...are you sure about this? I mean, I just tried to attack you Alex.”
“If Kiba was here I would have him to do, but he’s not here. Shadow, I trust you with my life, as I do you Aurora. But I believe that Shadow, more so than anyone, knows what I am willing to do to see Brittany again. That is why I want you to do this. So please, do this one last favor for me,” Alex pleaded, holding the dagger out for Shadow to grasp once more.
Shadow hesitated for only a second, before Aurora grasped his shoulder. Shadow looked at her, and his heart he realized what Alex meant. He knew that he would go to any lengths possible to be with her, and it was for that reason that he knew what he must do. He turned back to Alex and nodded slowly, taking hold of the dagger in his hand.
“Now, are you ready to see Brittany again?” Raza asked with a smile.
“You better believe it!” Alex replied with a smirk. He closed his eyes and stood before Shadow. “Let’s do this.”
Shadow nodded and drew back with the dagger in his hand. He took a deep breath before plunging the dagger into Alex’s chest, right where his heart was. Alex winced in pain for only a fraction of a second before his body went limp and he fell to the floor. Shadow instantly reached out to grab him and gently laid him on the floor. He looked up at Raza to ask if Alex would be okay, but Raza had disappeared. Shadow was about to ask what the Hell just happened, but suddenly Raza’s voice echoed through the room.
“Watch over him. I must leave now, but know this. In ten days he will return, and then the final battle for the fate of your realm will begin.”
