“What do you mean?”
“I mean, you have lost your will power, and due to the strong amount of remorse you feel for all those you have wronged, your soul will be continually tormented by the dead. Before you can enter, you must battle with your inner demons. In your case, it will be a little more literal than for most.”
Alex looked at Lucia as if he was crazy. “And just how am I supposed to go about doing that?”
“Your soul will be tried by all those who you have killed,” Lucia stated.
“What do you mean?”
“The souls of the slain will enter your body and torment your soul. You will be put through the worst pain that you could ever imagine as each person who has fallen by your hands will have their chance to torment your soul as they see fit until you have felt the pain that they have. What they do to you will not only affect your soul, but your body as well. Without your demonic powers you will be as weak and frail as a normal human. Only when those you have slain have had their vengeance and find you faultless for your crimes will you be able to enter the main part of the Celestial Realm. In other words, you must accept your crimes and accept their deaths and not allow them to torment you anymore.”
“Right, sounds like fun,” Alex stated with a frown. “How long will something like this take? As you know, I am on a time limit.”
“Well, it depends mainly on the persons will power and their remorse for the crimes committed. A man with a weak will power that has killed one person, it could take up to a day for the person’s soul to be cleansed of evil and for the souls that he has killed to be sedated.”
“And a person with a strong will power?”
“A person with a strong will power, such as yourself will be after you get it back, that has killed one person, could very well purge his soul of evil and sedate the soul that he has killed within a matter of minutes.”
“Well that’s a relief. That sounds more like it,” Alex said.
“There is, however, another requirement for the amount of time it takes to remove the evil and finish this. And that, is the number of men that the person has slain,” Lucia said slowly, already predicting Alex’s outcome.
“We might have a problem there,” Alex said with a sigh. “So, calculating my strong will...and the fact that I’ve killed...well...a lot of people, how long do you think it would take?”
“It’s hard to say exactly. There are many factors that could change it, but roughly I’d say nine days,” Lucia stated.
“Nine days! Are you sure it couldn’t take less? I mean, what if it takes longer, I’ll be stuck here! Isn’t there someway that we could cut off some of the time it would take?”
“No, and don’t fear about taking too long. I wouldn’t have brought you here if I thought you would become a permanent resident here.”
“Still...that will only leave me one day with her. Not to mention the time the council meeting will take up. I’ll barely even be able to see her.”
“Even if you do, it is not guaranteed that she will remember you, but don’t worry. Remember, this will be more time than you would’ve gotten to spend with her. Also, there is a chance that I might be able to persuade the elders of the council to bring her back to life.”
Alex let what Lucia told him sink in before finally nodding. “Fine, then let’s do this.”
“Good. Once I start and can actually see the spirits of those you have killed I will better be able to judge the amount of time needed to complete this.” Raza waved his hand, and suddenly both him and Alex were teleported to a place that looked like they were standing on top of a cloud. A cloud that expanded infinitely in all direction. The place was barren as far as they eye could see. “This is where the test shall take place.”
Alex nodded and closed his eyes. He took several deep breaths before opening his eyes again. He grabbed hold of the necklace that he had given Brittany and silently whispered a prayer. “Please my love, wait for me just a little longer.”
“Very well, let us begin.” Lucia took his staff and slammed the bottom of it to the ground. Their was a bright flash of light, and suddenly, their entire field of vision was filled with the souls of those that Alex had slain. They went on as far as the eye could see in every direction. Both Lucia’s and Alex’s eyes widened in shock as they looked at the nearly infinite numbers of souls that had gathered in front of them.
“So, about that whole quantity thing. I think I might have killed one or two more people than I had originally thought,” Alex said with a nervous laugh as he stared at the hollow and dead faces of those he had killed.
“Judging by the...vast numbers of souls...nine days might not be enough,” Lucia muttered, still shocked by just how many people Alex had slain.
“Seven days....”
“What?”
“I’ll do it in seven days,” Alex stated.
“That’s impossible! There’s no way you would ever be able to...,” Lucia yelled.
“Seven days, that way I’ll be able to spend some time with Brittany and my child before I have to leave. Now, let’s go ahead and start,” Alex said without a care in the world. The only thing he was focusing on was being able to see his family again.
Lucia was shocked at Alex’s actions, but at the same time he had predicted as much. He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair. “Fine, then let it begin.”
Lucia stepped back, away from Alex. The souls moved aside to let him pass. Once he was a few steps away from him, he snapped his fingers. Alex closed his eyes as one by one the vast number of souls flew into his chest. One by one they entered, and what usually took under a minute for a normal person’s crimes, took close to twenty minutes for Alex. After the last soul had entered him, Alex turned to Lucia with a look of wonder.
“Is that it? I would have thought....” Alex’s eyes widened in what only can be described as a mask of pain. Before he could say anything, he began to violently cough up blood. His skin became pale and his eyes nearly doubled back into his head. He fell to one knee while blood poured from his mouth. He held his hands out in front of him for support to steady himself. Even so, Lucia knew that this was only the beginning. Still, he had to admit that Alex was far stronger than he had given him credit for.
Now we shall see how strong he is without his demonic power. He’s doing well so far, as well as can be expected anyway, but I want to see your inner power. That is what will truly decide whether or not you will become a permanent resident here.
Lucia turned to walk away, just as he heard Alex fall to the ground. Just as he was about to leave, a scream of utter pain and agony erupted from Alex’s throat. Lucia hesitated to leave, but he knew he must. He quickly disappeared into the white fog, but not before leaving Alex with some parting words.
“If you hope to see Brittany again, find peace, and do not let the souls make you feel rage or hatred toward them. Grieve for them, and they will sense your humanity and allow your soul to be purged, but if you harvest hatred in your heart for them, then you will never succeed.”
With that, Lucia left Alex alone to face his demons. Alex’s screams of agony still filled his ears moments later when he was once again standing before the council.
“You do realize that this test could kill him?” Shimera asked.
“Yes, but trust me. I have spent a lot of time with Alex before this, I know him. He is too stubborn and too prideful to die. He claimed he would be through within seven days time,” Lucia replied calmly.
“That arrogant fool,” Tristan stated. “He has no idea what a Hell that will be on him.”

Author's Note: Alex is in for a rough time. I mean, out of all the torture that he's taken he should be use to it, but this is worse than phsyical or even mental torture. This is torture of the soul. Having the souls of all those you have killed infiltrate your body...especially considering just how many people Alex has killed.
