“What did you do with the others?” Alex asked without turning around to face the fiend that stood behind him.
“Let’s just say I’ve made sure that we wouldn’t be interrupted,” a dark voice responded from behind him. “I’ll save killing them until after I’m through with you.”
Alex stood, waiting for the monster to come at him. After a moment of the monster’s continued silence Alex sighed and shook his head. “Come out! Your voice gave it away. I know now without a shadow of a doubt who you are. So show yourself, Kiba!”
The figure stepped out of the darkness, revealing the grey form of none other than Kiba. “Well lad, it seems you are not as dumb as I first thought. Ye seemed to have figured me out. I guess I should give you a little more credit. Guess that’s what I get for underestimating you lad.”
Alex twirled around to face his adversary and his friend. Alex’s lips were quivering slightly from withheld emotions as he faced Kiba. “Stop it! Stop pretending to be him! Stop trying to sound like him! I know you’re not him! You’re not Kiba. Kiba would’ve never sold his soul to Scion!”
“Not even to see the person he considered a son to him, just one last time?” the being known only as Kiba said with a sneer.
Alex’s face paled slightly as he lost some of his confidence. “No....”
“How doe it feel to once again be betrayed by the person whom you trusted more than life itself? How does it feel to know that your best friend and the only real father you ever knew, is now the reason for all your suffering?”
Alex froze. Something about Kiba’s words made him realize that he was right all along. This monster may look like Kiba, he may have Kiba’s body, he may have Kiba’s soul, but this monster is not Kiba!
Alex glared at the imposter. He clenched hi hands, which were trembling with mixed emotions that coursed through Alex, into a tight fist. “I have a father. His name is Alcadan. He is my real father, and has done more for me than I could have ever known. But the person from whom I considered more than a friend and the person for whom I considered to be like a father to me, that person was Kiba. I owe my life to him. For if it wasn’t for him watching out for me all those years, I wouldn’t be here right now. Kiba was more to me than anyone could have ever known. He was more than a friend, and far more than a father to me. I trusted Kiba with my life and still do. But you’re not him! So who are you really? What are you? How was Scion able to let you take over Kiba’s body?”
The imposter only smirked at Alex’s outburst. He suddenly disappeared from sight, only to appear crouched on a tree limb above Alex. “Since you seem to be so convinced as to what I am not, I will tell you what I am. That day, the day of your rebirth. The day that Razriel reentered this world after Alcadan removed your sel. The day of the last great war. On that day, Kiba died.”
Alex took into account what the demon had just said. “How? How did Scion bring Kiba back and turn him into...into you?”
The demon’s laughter echoed in Alex’s ears. “You can thank your mother for that. Your right hand will come down and smite you. When your battle with Scion cam to an end due to your mother’s interference, he summoned a soul that he had been keeping for quite sometime. As you now know, it takes the soul of a loved one to fully bring someone back from the dead.”
“You bastard! He used Celeste’s soul! Didn’t he?” Alex roared.
“Ah yes,” the demon sighed. “How sweet the love is between mates. Especially when a third soul is entered into the fray.”
“A third soul?”
“Heh, yes. A third soul, or rather a part of a third soul was also put into Kiba’s body. Due to the nature of the spell of course that brought him back, Scion was able to choose which of the soul’s would be dominant in Kiba’s body. I of course, took over, and thus managed to use Kiba’s personality to ensure that I would never be detected as anyone else but him. Not only could I get close to you, but I also got some interesting powers due to Celeste’s soul and mine own being fused with Kiba’s. Whereas only one soul was used to bring you back, two were used in Kiba’s. Meaning two unique powers were gifted to me.”
“And just who are you exactly?” Alex asked through teeth that were clenched in disgust.
“You still haven’t figured it out, have you? Scion’s right hand and your right hand will become one and strike you down. That is how the original saying went. Kiba was your right hand, but who was Scion’s right hand?” The demon’s expression was one of pure delight as he watched Alex’s facial expression go from confusion, to enlightenment, to shock, and finally to anger.
Alex’s vision was nearly blurred with anger as he glared up at the demon. “Zanatos!” Alex roared.
“Bingo,” Zanatos replied coyly. “And now that introductions have been made, it’s time for the game to begin!”
Before Alex could even react, Zanatos disappeared from sight. Alex’s eyes nearly doubled over as Zanatos’s feet came crashing into his chest, sending him flying.
Alex flipped with the blow, landing on his feet and transforming into his demonic form. “I’ve beaten you before Zanatos. You know that I can beat you again.”
“Ha, we shall see about that,” Zanatos challenged.
Alex rushed toward Zanatos, who much to Alex’s surprise didn’t even both to try and dodge his attack. As Alex’s hand came crashing down toward Zanatos’s face, Alex felt just a small ripple of Zanatos’s power. It was then that he realized why Zanatos didn’t bother to dodge his attack.
Zanatos stopped Alex’s attack with left hand. He watched as Alex winced in pain as Zanatos’s grip on his arm tightened to the point that Alex’s wrist broke. “You disappoint me. I was hoping that you would take this battle more seriously. Just because you beat me once before without using the power of the crystals, doesn’t mean you can do so now. You see, while you’ve relied on brute force your entire life, I have tried to become a master of my demonic powers. For eons I have trained until I have obtained complete mastery over them. Now, imagine what a focus shockwave of demonic energy could do to you if done properly. On second thought, I’ll just show you!”
Zanatos raised his right arm. Alex could feel the demonic energy pulsating off of it, and he couldn’t believe that this power was actually possible. Kiba’s grey fur suddenly exploded off of the arm, as Zanatos’s true form took shape. His arm was completely black at first, but then blue crystals began to form out of his arm. Covering the forearm in a protective layer of crystals and giving his right arm a more jagged look to it. Crystals also emerged from his shoulder blades and began to encase his chest. Before the transformation was complete, Zanatos slammed his fist into Alex’s chest. At the moment of contact, Alex felt a huge amount of demonic energy surge through his body like electricity. The after effect of the jolt sent Alex flying backwards. He flew too fast for him to try and stop himself, much less try to soften the blows as his body shattered any trees that came across its path.
By the time Alex had finally managed to slow down, he had cleared half the forest. He was laying in a pile of broken trees and branches. He was surprised by the sheer force and magnitude of Zanatos’s attack. When Alex managed to stand and look around, he couldn’t believe it.
That bastard knocked me out of the damn forest! I’m here by the lake. Is he really that powerful?
As if in response to Alex’s thoughts, another shockwave of demonic energy was sent hurdling through the forest. Alex watched in a mixture of shock and horror as the entire forest was decimated in the fraction of a second. There, standing in the middle of the now barren wasteland was the completely transformed Zanatos. Much to Alex’s distaste, Zanatos’s new form still resembled too much of Kiba for Alex’s own liking. The body still looked like Kiba, but now instead of grey fur it was covered by black skin and blue crystals. The crystals, covered Zanatos’s forearms, shoulders, chest, and face. The way they formed around his forehead made it appear as if he had horns.
“So, are you going to take me seriously now?” Zanatos asked with an amused expression.
Alex closed his eyes and activated the power of all three crystals. His demonic energy nearly double in strength, which manifested itself by a whirlwind of energy that encircled him. “What do you think?” Alex asked when he reopened his eyes.
“I think you shouldn’t take your eyes off of your opponent,” Zanatos declared just inches from Alex’s face. Alex wasn’t even able to move before Zanatos’s fist slammed into his face. Alex flew backwards, into the lake that right behind him. Alex skidded across the waters surface, barely having time to flip up and use his own energy to stand on it. The moment he stood, however, he received a foot to the chest, causing him to lose his balance.
Alex managed to look up in time to throw his arms out in front of him as Zanatos clasped his hands together and slammed them into Alex, sending him torpedoing underwater.
Alex’s feet rested on the lake’s bottom. His eyes glowed in the darkness of the murky water, allowing him to see Zanatos who was still standing on top of the lakes surface. Alex knew that any of the monsters that resided in this lake were nothing compared to the monster that faced him above the water. For that reason, he waited a second to gather his thoughts.
I’m no match for him. He’s too fast and too strong. An hour has yet to pass, so I must refrain from using my armor. If I lose myself to the armor, then there will be no way in Hell that I will survive long enough to kill him. I had said earlier that I was going to die no matter what happened, but now that my death seems assured, why now do I fear it? Lucia, your words gave me hope. Damn you. Your words gave me hope for living. Its for that reason that I can’t die by his hands!
Alex rocketed out of the water, right beneath Zanatos’s feet. His claws raked against Zanatos’s chest as he flew above him. Alex flipped away from Zanatos, landing on the waters edge, ready for his next strike.
Zanatos looked at Alex with shock for a second, but then resumed his calm demeanor. Alex quickly realized why to. His claws hadn’t even damaged the crystal armor, and the spots where the armor didn’t protect him were already almost healed.
“Nice try, but it’ll take more than that to defeat me,” Zanatos called out to him. “Why don’t you try it again?”
Alex roared with rage. In the blink of an eye he was upon Zanatos.
“You know, through my studies I have learned something. Just as we can turn the structure of water solid enough for us to stand on, if we properly channel our demonic energy through it, it can be used as an awfully good weapon. Take this for example.”
Just as Alex was about to lash out at Zanatos, Zanatos kicked the water out in front of Alex. Sending a splash of water toward him. Alex could see demonic energy crackling throughout the water, but he didn’t have time to avoid it now. The water collided with him like a hundred spears. Each droplet was as hard as stone and as sharp as a blade. Pain coursed throughout Alex’s body as the water washed over him.
Before he even had a chance to fully register the pain from Zanatos’s surprise attack, Zanatos launched himself at Alex. He spun in air, slashing at Alex with every rotation. With every rotation, Zanatos’s claws dug deeper and deeper into Alex’s flesh, sending spurts of blood everywhere. Alex fell to his knees, blood pouring out of him causing a small portion of the lake to turn a dark crimson color. Zanatos kicked Alex in the face, causing Alex to fall onto his back. Alex was tempted to just sink beneath the surface of the lake and hide beneath the dark waters until his wounds healed, but unfortunately for him, Zanatos wasn’t about to give him the chance.
Zanatos launched himself into the air. As he reached the peak of his jump, a whirlwind of demonic energy began to swirl around Alex’s body. Zanatos only laughed as he pointed his right arm at Alex. The whirlwind pressed Alex’s body against the waters surface, but instead of slipping beneath it, it was like his body was being squished against a stone tablet. Alex couldn’t budge an inch as Zanatos came crashing down upon him. His arms were arched back, ready to finish this with his next blow.
Alex struggled in vain against his invisible restraints. It’s no use. I don’t have any choice. Mom, please protect me once more. I need your strength if I am to beat him. I won’t be able to use it for long, not until the effects of Scion’s spell are voided. But for now, lend me your strength!
Right as Zanatos’s hands went to stab for Alex’s chest, two large red hands stopped his attack, holding him suspended in midair. Scion watched in shock as Alex’s arms went from their normal color, to being covered by the Devil Armor.
“No!” Zanatos cursed. A slight hint of annoyance and even possibly fear crept over him as Alex held him suspended in the air.
“Playtime’s over!” Alex roared. He effortlessly threw Zanatos back onto the dry shore. Zanatos slammed into a large rock pile, which turned to dust under the impact of his landing. Alex quickly took advantage of this and launched himself at Zanatos. Alex could already feel the mind numbing effects of the bloodlust that seemed even more powerful now than before. He knew he couldn’t keep this up for long, not until the curse had been completely removed. Still, he was about to make the time he did have count.
Alex launched himself at Zanatos. Zanatos flipped onto his feet, using the momentum to bring his claws crashing down upon Alex. Zanatos barely managed to stifle a curse as Alex managed to block both of Zanatos’s arms with his left hand. Not one to let an opportunity pass him by, Alex used his right arm to slash open Zanatos’s unprotected stomach. Blood poured from Zanatos’s wound, and even though he tried to repay Alex for his wound, Zanatos was unable to land a blow on Alex who managed to deflect everyone of his attacks.
Alex, however, landed blow after punishing blow upon Zanatos. His fists collided with Zanatos face. Alex knew his attacks were strong enough to shatter Zanatos’s bones, but due to the crystal armor surrounding him, he didn’t know just how much damage his attacks were actually doing. Zanatos tried to attack Alex once more, this time he aimed to backhand Alex with his claws. His attack succeeded in tearing the flesh off of most of Alex’s chest and the upper part of his right arm, but it also left Zanatos wide open for attack. Alex slammed his left fist deep into Zanatos’s stomach, causing Zanatos to double over in pain. While Zanatos was stunned, Alex made his move.
Alex grabbed hold of Zanatos’s face with his right arm. The jagged edges of the crystals dug deep into his flesh as he tightened his grip.
It’s all or nothing now, Alex thought as he ran several scenarios of what was about to happen. All of them didn’t end in his favor. I won’t be able to make it out of here alive, but I’ll be damned if I don’t take him straight to Hell with me.

Author's Note: Yep! I had to do it. Kiba, Alex's best friend, is now the demon who has been tormenting Alex...even though technically it wasn't Kiba...but still! What did you guys think?
