Zanatos’s body sunk to the bottom as Alex walked into the very middle of the lake. “Come out, come out wherever you are!” Alex called in a devilish tone.
There was a sound of rushing water beside Alex, but before he could block it, a vortex of water hit him full force in the chest. Concealed within the force of water, was Zanatos. He spun along with the vortex of water, his claws slicing through Alex’s flesh and bone before he dived back into the murky depths of the lake.
Alex gasped in pain as blood dripped from his new wounds. He realized that the water itself had been hardened as before, that along with Scion’s attack had inflicted even more unneeded damage to his already broken body. Just as Alex got a chance to catch his breath from Zanatos’s first attack, he once again heard the sound of rushing water coming from behind him.
Alex quickly turned to face the onslaught of water that awaited him. He tried to lash out at the water with his claws, hoping to somehow manage to strike Zanatos in the process. Alex was surprised to learn that the water had hardened even beyond his capabilities of destroying, thus once more the water came crashing down upon Alex. The water felt like tiny blades slicing through his skin. It kept him from being able to dodge Zanatos’s attack, which was the main source of damage.
Every time that Alex got a chance to move and to get out of the lake, Zanatos launched his attack. One vortex of water after the next came crashing into Alex’s body. By the time Alex had taken enough damage to cause him to fall to his knees, the water was no longer a dark blue, for it was now a dark scarlet color that matched Alex’s own skin. The blood from his wounds mixed in with his skin’s own blood-like color, thus making it hard to tell just how much damage he had taken. But Alex knew that he could not take much more of this.
Alex was panting hard, blood dripping from his lips as he did so. His body hurt everywhere, and he knew that Zanatos had the upper hand as long as he could manipulate the water like he did. What’s the point of having all this newfound power if I can’t use it? I can’t even hit him. I’m as good as dead unless I do something quickly.
Even as Alex thought this, Zanatos silently emerged from the water behind him. He let the crystals on his hands to form into large spikes, as he prepared to decapitate Alex from behind. The moment he moved to lob Alex’s head off, Alex suddenly fell beneath the surface of the lake.
“No!” Zanatos cursed as he missed his chance to end this battle quickly. Alex didn’t make him wait long to find out where he had went. He wasn’t submerged but for a split second before he launched himself out of the water, uppercutting Zanatos as he did so. Zanatos fell back first onto the water’s surface. Blood dripped from his face from where Alex’s fist had cracked his jaw. He watched as Alex continued to glide in the air.
Alex seemed to halt in mid-air. He extended his arms out to either side of him. In a flash of light, both his arms erupted in flames.
“What! You can use magic in that form!” Zanatos exclaimed. Trying to buy time for him to retreat to the bottom of the lake.
“This isn’t magic Zanatos. When you mess with the Devil, you should be prepared to be burnt by Hell Fire!” Alex raised both his hands over his head, and dark orb of fire appeared in hands. He made sure not to give Zanatos a chance to retreat before he launched the flame at him. There was a large explosion the moment the fire ball connected with the lake. The heat from the flames evaporated most of the water in the lake, what was left of it was sent straight into the air by the sheer force of the explosion. The only thing left in the now water-less lake was the charred form of Zanatos.
Alex landed only a few feet away from Zanatos. The steam from the water made it hard for him to see, but he could tell that Zanatos was barely able to move. That was how badly injured his body was. Alex slowly walked over toward the figure that was still covered by the thick amount of steam that covered the lake’s floor. With every step that Alex took, his body seemed to ignite with fire. His feet left fire indentations in the ground. For the flames had not only consumed his arms, but his feet, and his hair as well. His hair was now a flame that descended down his back and his feet were more like torches.
Even with Alex’s new demonic appearance, he feared that this battle was far from over. For if Zanatos managed to last much longer and was able to heal himself, the tides would once more turn in his favor. It was for that reason that Alex knew he had to hurry and defeat him.
Blood trailed behind Alex with every fiery footstep that he took. The flames of his body and the blood from his wounds mixed with the steam from the evaporated water. Alex finally made it to the form of Zanatos, who hadn’t moved an inch in the time that it took Alex to reach him. The steam was still impeding Alex’s vision, along with the blood that continually dripped into his eyes.
“It’s over Zanatos. You will perish by my hands once more,” Alex said without any hint of emotion in his voice.
“No, it is far from over. I will kill you. These wounds are nothing more than a minor annoyance. It would take far more than this to stop me from completing my goal,” Zanatos said.
Alex still couldn’t see him, all he could do was make out Zanatos’s form in the steam of the water. “Stubborn til the end. Fine, if that is your wish. I will end your life while you are still in the denial of your defeat!”
Alex went to slash at Zanatos, but the moment he did the steam that surrounded him disappeared. Revealing that instead of attack what he thought was a severely injured Zanatos, he was instead attack the unconscious form of Shadow.
What the Hell? Shit! These were the only thoughts that were able to course through Alex’s mind before pain coursed through his body. Zanatos’s claws dug into Alex’s back, tearing the flesh off it with brutal intensity.
By the time Alex had managed to turn around, Zanatos had once again disappeared into hiding.
Great, I’ve taken away the water from him only to have him hide in the aftermath of my attack. As long as he stays hidden I won’t be able to fight him. I’ve got to draw him out somehow, the only question is how do I do it.
Alex once again saw the form of someone else. Through the steam he couldn’t tell who it was, but whoever it was, they were moving. Alex didn’t even say anything for fear of giving away his position. Instead he launched himself at the figure, realizing that friend or foe, he was going to ensure that they wouldn’t move ever again.
The instant Alex launched himself at the figure, it fell into a heap on the rocky floor. Alex’s claws missed the figure by centimeters. He quickly turned around to face his opponent, only to realize that his opponent had yet to get back up. He cautiously neared the figure. His stomach tightened and his muscles tensed. He was at full alert. He would be ready this time if Zanatos tried to pull something. As Alex neared the body he realized that he was now staring at the unconscious form of Aurora.
Alex heard something behind him and he quickly turned around, ready for Zanatos’s attack. Just as before, however, Zanatos managed to lash out at Alex’s back. This time his claws raked over Alex’s already tender flesh, digging his claws even further into his back.
Alex roared in pain. He twirled around, ready to face his foe. Yet all he saw once more was the unconscious form of Aurora. I don’t know how he’s doing it, but he’s really starting to piss me off! I can’t take much more of this. Already I’m starting to feel a little light headed from all the blood loss. I have to take him out quickly.
Alex moved through the dried up lake without fear of attack. He sped through the bottom, forgetting completely about stealth. At this point it was all or nothing. If he didn’t find Zanatos soon he would be as good as dead anyways.
Alex had just about come full circle when he once again saw the moving form of someone, hidden in the steam of the water vapor. Alex launched himself at the person, this time purposely missing so that he could flip behind them and have an open shot at their back. The moment he did so, the person he attacked screamed.
That voice, Alex thought as he landed. The steam gave way to his foe, to reveal a shocking sight. The person standing before was wearing a white dress. Her eyes were full of fear and worry as she gazed into Alex’s eyes.
“Alex?” Brittany whispered.
Alex took a step toward her. Lowering his guard for only a fraction of a second as he stared at her in complete shock. A cruel smile crept across her lips, reminding Alex all too well about Zanatos’s other power. Alex’s mind quickly informed him that this was not Brittany. This was none other than Zanatos himself. In the split second that thoughts coursed through his mind, he realized that it was also Zanatos the times before this. Shadow and Aurora were probably God only knows where. The people he had thought were his friends were really just Zanatos.
Alex tried to bring his arms up to block, but his mind worked just a second too late. Brittany’s arm transformed into a crystalized sword, one that was stabbed into Alex’s chest. Alex roared in pain as blood flew from his mouth. His hands were clutched tightly around the sword as Brittany came in closer to him.
“Scream for me lover,” Zanatos, still disguised as Brittany told him. Zanatos then returned to his normal form and added. “You’ve done everything else for me. Killing all those innocent people. Now you can die for me as well!”
Zanatos slid his sword through Alex’s chest, cutting him deeper and further across his body. Alex’s vision was blurring and he knew that any second he was going to pass out from the pain. His hands gripped Zanatos’s crystalized arm, but the blood that poured from his chest made his grip slippery. Alex’s eyes rolled back into his head, and it took everything he had to focus them once more.
“It will not end here,” Alex whispered. “Not like this.” Alex knew his strength was ebbing fast, for Zanatos’s wound had been a fatal one. But he also knew that he couldn’t die before killing Zanatos. Alex mentally blocked out the pain in his body. He knew that would only be a temporary solution, but after eons of practice at doing this, Alex knew that it would at least give him a few more minutes of life.
“It’s not over yet!” Alex roared as he shattered Zanatos’s crystalized blade. Zanatos flipped backwards away from Alex, only to have Alex right on top of him.
“No more hiding! Fight me like a man!” Alex yelled. Zanatos wasn’t able to dodge the clawed hand that sliced across his chest. Not only did Alex’s claws cut Zanatos, but due to the flames that had consumed his arms it also burned him as well.
Zanatos hissed in pain, but Alex wasn’t letting him get away. Alex skid to a halt, ramming his left fist into Zanatos’s chest. Zanatos tried to strike out at him, but it did little. Alex dodged Zanatos’s attack with ease. He quickly got behind Zanatos and stabbed both his hands into the back of Zanatos’s shoulder blades. Zanatos didn’t even have time to scream before Alex summoned more of his demonic energy to his hands.
Flames licked at Zanatos’s back, melting the flesh from it without remorse. Alex charged his demonic energy and lifted Zanatos into the air. Zanatos managed one feeble curse before Alex’s hands launched another fireball, this one originating in Zanatos’s back. The explosion sent Zanatos flying out of the steam filled crater and back onto the destroyed forest, exactly where Alex had wanted him. Before Zanatos hit the ground, the fiery form of Alex appeared out of the lake. His flaming hand grabbed hold of the back of Zanatos’s head, searing the flesh from it, and drove his head into the rock hard ground with surprising force.
