Chapter 7: The Tape

Weeks passed, while Andrew and Cassy became closer and better friends. The best of all was that Cassy was starting to become a member of Andrew's little "gang". Each guy enjoyed her company, especially because she was a girl and she could help them with their girl problems. Because of her gaining new friends, she seemed to enjoy school and talking more often than before. That bad part of this was that Candy Richardson and her popular group of friends didn't like this at all. Not one bit.

"Oh my god! That little know-it-all thinks she's cool just because she hangs out with Drew and his guys!" Lacey whispered to Candy angrily. Lacey was ticked because Cassy hung out with Will, the guy she had her eye on.

"Hmph! She thinks she can get with Drew, she's got another thing coming!" Candy steamed.

"I know! Here's the plan girls…." Lacey whispered to the little gang.

"Oh that's good!"

"I can't wait to see this!"

"I definitely can't wait!" Candy smirked, glancing over at the table with the five guys and one girl. They looked like they were having a blast, laughing their heads off at Kevin who was doing something stupid again. Candy eyed Cassy angrily and it looked like steam was coming out of her ears.

As Cassy and her new group of guy friends were laughing at Kevin, she felt someone giving her a cold stare. She turned her head to find Candy staring straight at her with what looked like ice in her eyes. She quickly turned her head back to face the group.

"Hey, what's wrong, Cass?" Brian asked.

"Nothing. I just have a feeling that Candy's gonna' do something to me. She was giving me an ice-cold glare a minute ago. She was smirking too," she answered quickly.

"Candy? Don't worry about her. She usually listens to me," Andrew stated, "Well, at least I think so."

"Yeah, don't worry about her and her group of friends, Cass," Josh said, "If she does something to ya' then we'll get her back for you!"

"Thanks you guys," Cassy smiled. Wow! So this is what it's like to have a real group of friends! Andrew's lucky to have cool guys to have his back for him. And family at that too, she thought quietly to herself. When she though about her family, they never had been there for her. Even if it was for just a simple family night out or even her birthday. Almost all of her life, she had wondered what it was like to have kind, loving parents. While Cassy was thinking about this in her mind, Andrew noticed something else was bothering her.

That night, Andrew and Cassy had their tutoring session at his house because her parents were having a business get-together and didn't want to get distracted with Cassy. It was planned for just business. Not meeting the family. That's what they thought in their minds.

"Wow! You have a neat house!" Cassy said out loud.

"Really? It's not as big as your house, but I still like it here."

"You probably won't believe me but I like your house better than mine. Everything seems more welcome. I like your parents too. They seem very nice."

"Thanks. Mom loves visitors."

"Yeah, I like your mom. This may seem mean, but I think I like your mom better than mine. To be honest. My mom's never home and doesn't seem to like me having the few friends that I have over," Cassy said sadly. Getting out of her sad state quickly she continued, "So, where do you want to study? It's your house."

"My room. It's quieter there and maybe I can think better too," Andrew said walking down the stairs. While walking down, he was thinking about what Cassy's mom was like.

"Cool! You live in the basement? This is so neat! Wow! You even have a water bed! I love these things!" she said as she hopped on to the bed, bobbing up and down from the flow of water.

"Thanks. So what page were we on?" Andrew asked.

"Oh yeah. I think page…"

"Well, see ya'! Thanks for the cookies, Mrs. Chammon! Andrew, keep working on those formulas, 'kay? Thanks again!" Cassy waved as she drove home.

"What a nice girl. What, are you two going to go out, Andrew?" Mrs. Chammon winked at her now blushing son.

"WHAT?!?!" Andrew stammered at the thought, "W-when did I ever say that?!"

"Oh, I saw that look as she said good-bye!" his mom grinned, "Oh don't worry! I'll keep it a secret." And at that, she winked again, going back to her cooking. The rest of the night, he was scared to look at his own mother.

The next day at school, Candy walked up to Andrew while he was at his locker. Secretly, under her jacket, she had a tape recorder.

"Hi Drew! Is it true from what I've heard? You and Cassy are going out?"

"What? Who said that? We're not like that at all! I don't like her at all that way! We're just friends. Well, not just friends. We're best friends. That way!"

"Oh. Well, that's good," Candy said as she batted her eyes and walked away. Boy, they way these rumor start! he thought to himself. Unknowingly, four other girls from Candy's group did the same to Josh, Kevin, Brian, and Will. With the tape recorder too.

That night, Candy's brother, Matt, had worked over on the tape until he got it exactly as Candy wanted it.

"Why are you doing this anyway?" the thirteen year old asked his older sister.

"Because I'm testing you're recording skills, little brother! We can see if this can play well or not and see if you cut the tape right," Candy smirked, "Thanks Matty-Poo!"

"Argh. You know I hate that name," Matt muttered.

"I know. That's why I use it."

Next morning, at her locker, Candy gave the tape to Cassy.

"You should listen to this. It gives you an inside look on how the guys look at you," Candy said, as she handed the tape to her.

"Er…thanks."

"No problem at all." After Candy walked over to her group of friends, Cassy pressed play on they tape player.

"No! Who said that? We're not like that at all! I don't like her at all that way! We're not friends!" Andrew's voice came up. The rest by the other guys said at least the same thing. How could this be true? Did they feel sorry for me or something and pretended to be nice to me? Andrew's just using me to get better grades? her mind pounded as she listened over and over.

"You guys. Listen to this," she pressed play for all them to hear, "Is all of this true? I couldn't believe it because Candy had given it to me. But truthfully…is it?"

"No way! You are our best…uh what's the other word for girl?"

"Female?"

"Yeah that's it! You are our best female friend!"

"Yeah! And Candy gave it to you? Why would you believe that?"

"I don't know. It's just that…the friends I have made in the past…have all done this to me…that's all….I didn't want it to happen again."

"Well, now you know, we think of you a totally different way. We aren't like those friends you've had in the past, okay?"

"Yeah. I should've known that, you guys. Thanks"

"Hey, Cass, can I see that tape? I've got business to attend to with that," Andrew asked. Cassy nodded, "Thanks."

Andrew and the others walked over to Candy's table.

"Hey Candy," Andrew muttered.

"Huh…oh hey, Drew!"

"Hi Will!" Lacey added!

"What do you guys need?"

"Candy, does this tape look familiar to you?" Andrew asked waving the tape in her face.

"What…er…no! N-not at all! Why?"

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. You know, you girls shouldn't try to tear friendships apart like that, "Brian said scowling at them all.

"Yeah, you shouldn't lie either," Josh included.

"I'm surprised that you would do that Lacey," Will added going along with the others. Kevin, sadly, was looking up at the ceiling, not noticing what was going on.

"Don't blame me! It was all Lacey's idea!" Candy said quickly, pointing a finger at her best friend.

"Friends don't rat out friends either. And then you wonder why I don't bother going out with you, Candy. Well, here's your tape back!" Andrew said as he and the guys left.

"But…argh! She told! That little bitch!"
