by Konran no Tenshi

Author's Note: Ok, this was totally and completely random. It's just a small WAFF-y scene I came up with while listening to this awesome song… but ok. Now to the important stuff. This is an AU vignette of a yet-to-be-named series that deals with angels and demons. The original series idea belongs to Chishio no Tenshi, but all the AU versions are mine. The character Konran no Tenshi, the Angel of Chaos, is mine, and I came up with her before I ever met Chishio. Vertigo, or Ataru Himashima, belongs to the wonderful and ever-sukebei Akki no Tenshi. Arigatou for letting me snitch him. ^_~ That said, enjoy the 'fic, minna-san!

Hey now

All you sinners

Put your lights on

Put your lights on

Hey now

All you lovers

Put your lights on

Put your lights on

The night was soft and dark, a lingering warmth remaining in the air even in the absence of the sun, although a few struggling rays still remained in the sky. The lone man dressed in a trenchcoat wandered the streets, bathed in the eerie reddish-purple twilight. The sun was dying, soon to give up its rule over the skies to its sister the moon.

"Moonlight... moonlit memories..."

His jaw and eyes hardened and he looked away, refusing to let the thoughts continue. He raked thick black bangs out of his face, pushing them impatiently out of his intense blue eyes. Soon it would be completely dark, with only the streetlamps and lights from the buildings to illuminate his wanderings.

He hardly slept anymore, some sort of nervous energy keeping him always awake and active. It was like being a vampire, without all the fun.

Hey now

All you killers

Put your lights on

Put your lights on

A small, humorless grin tugged at the corner of his mouth at the thought. Maybe he should try being a vampire. At least it would be better than his life now.

But even as the thought crossed his mind, he knew he wouldn't. Not for fear, not for squeamishness - for the memories.

"I was an enemy before... what would it matter?"

Something inside just wouldn't leave him alone though. He gritted his teeth, curling his lip back to show abnormally pointed teeth. Maybe if he killed something he would feel better. But then his conscience would start in too. Even though he still retained some of the tendencies that went with demon blood, his human half was usually dominant.

Although tonight the bloodlust was unusually strong. Possibly because once he had spilled blood, the numbness would come. The terrifying numbness that would take over and leave him a mere observer as it controlled his body, unable to act but unable to feel.

Hey now

All you children

Leave your lights on

Better leave your lights on

He ran his tongue over his teeth, feeling the sharpness, contemplating letting the berserker half of him run free. His easy stroll had led him to the bridge, lights starting to come out and shimmer over the water. A few stars coming out in the sky left stardust in the dark water, as well as the wavery white crescent that was the moon.

Sighing, he leaned on the rail and stared out over the city, ignoring the comments made by some women passing by wearing too-short skirts and skimpy tops. Their type didn't interest him.

He stubbornly squashed the thoughts that line of thinking led him to.

A straggler to their group, moving to avoid a gang of rough-looking guys in leather and chains, accidentally knocked into him from behind. "Sorry," she muttered, and moved on.

Out of the corner of his eye he caught a flash of silver.

'Cause there's a monster

Livin' under my bed

Whisperin' in my ear

And there's an angel

With her hand on my head

She's sayin' I got nothin' to fear

"That voice... but no... It couldn't be..." He froze for a brief second before jerking his head around to stare after the person. Knee-high boots... black leather miniskirt... same material sleeveless shirt... silver hair...

He felt as if he'd been punched in the stomach. Gasping for breath, he stood there dumbly. Then, coming back to his senses, he realized that she was disappearing into the crowd of people on the sidewalk. "Wait..."

He felt himself move without consciously willing it. Before he realized what he was doing, he was running down the sidewalk after her, jostling people aside regardless of the protests and dirty glares.

Panting for breath, he stopped for a second to look around. She was nowhere to be seen.

There's a darkness

Livin' deep in my soul

That's still got a purpose to serve

"Dammit!" He clenched his fists, trembling with the force of his rage and disappointment. "She did it again!"

Head bent, he walked back the other way, feeling the by now all-too-familiar sharp sting in his heart.

"It probably wasn't her anyway. I mean, how many times now have you done that? Moron."

He reached the bridge again, his favorite spot to contemplate. And then he blinked, trying to clear his vision, for he couldn't possibly be seeing what he was seeing.

The same silver-haired girl was standing near the rail. He couldn't see her face because her bangs shadowed it and the light was at the wrong angle, but all the same his heart began to beat a little faster.

He stepped up behind her, heart racing, mouth dry. Almost afraid to speak, he started to reach out a hand, but then stopped.

The girl didn't turn.

"K-k-konran?" He could barely get the word out.

He saw her go stiff, and nearly stopped breathing. Slowly, too slowly, she started to turn. Facing him, her head still bent, he still couldn't see her face. After a second, she tipped her head up, and he felt his world burst into white light that filled his vision.

So let your light shine

Deep into my hole

God don't let me lose my nerve

Don't let me lose my nerve

"Vertigo." Her voice was breathy, soft and husky just as he remembered it. "I thought it was you. Who I bumped into I mean. So I came back." Her liquid-silver eyes were large and shimmery in the low light.

He swallowed painfully. "It's Ataru now," he corrected her. "Ataru Himashima."

"Ataru." She nodded, accepting the change.

"So, what?" He crossed his arms, his voice going bitter. "Thought you'd stop in, chat a few hours, then go back to your happy little job and your happy little life again?" Inwardly, he was screaming, "No! I didn't mean it! I love you! Please!" But he just couldn't choke the words out.

A flash of... anger? defensiveness? no... hurt... flickered in her eyes, almost too fast to see. "No. I - I just wanted to see you."

"And what made you think I would want to see you again?" Which, of course, was the exact opposite of what he was thinking.

Hey now

Oh hey now

Hey now

Hey now

All you sinners

Put your lights on

Put your lights on

Hey now

All you children

Leave your lights on

Better leave your lights on

"I see." She nodded slightly, eyes going distant and cold on him with that look he hated to see. "Sorry to trouble you. I'll be going now." She turned and began to walk, flipping her hair, her beautiful silver hair, over her shoulder with a toss of her head.

Ataru squinched his eyes shut, nearly ready to cry. "K-konran... no..."

She stopped walking but didn't turn, waiting for him to finish.

He sucked in a big gulp of air, shakily exhaling. "I don't want you to leave me again. I wanted to see you, I wanted to see you so bad I couldn't even think. I missed you, I nearly died without you, I-"

He cut himself off, opening his eyes in shock, as he felt a feather-light touch drift across his face. Konran looked like she was stuck between tears and a smile, her eyes glittering up at him. "I'm glad," she said softly, and slipped her arms around him.

'Cause there's a monster

Livin' under my bed

Whisperin' in my ear

And there's an angel

With her hand on my head

She's sayin' I got nothin' to fear

Ataru froze for a second, then suddenly pulled her close to him and held her tightly, burying his face in her hair. Words were spilling out of her, choked and full of anguish as her body shook with sobs.

"I'm sorry, but I was scared... I thought I could leave and I'd be okay, everything would go back to the way it was... but it just wasn't possible. It hurt too much. I'm so sorry, please don't hate me..."

He stroked her hair, calming her. "Shh, it's okay. I don't hate you, I could never hate you." She sniffled and burrowed deeper into his chest, but he held her away for a moment and just looked at her. "God, you're beautiful."

She hiccuped and grinned weakly. "You're not bad yourself."

He favored her with one of his dazzlingly sweet smiles, then slipped a hand around to cup her head, leaned down, and kissed her. She slipped her arms around him in return, returning the kiss.

After a few minutes, he broke it, smiling down at her again. "Come on. It's getting late."

She nodded, smiling too, a purer, happier smile than he'd ever seen from her before.

He slipped his hand into hers and they walked down the street together, the streetlamps just beginning to flicker on.

She says

Ahhhhh

You're shinin' like a star

Ahhhhh

You're shinin' like a star

And then you fade away
