Chapter 2

As the doors opened Crystal's brothers each took one of her arms. As one all three siblings took a step forward.

For a moment none of them could see, for the light that reflected off the clean floor. Blinking, they looked at all the people that were watching them.

Crystal immediately became nervous. How she hated being noticed. Walking alongside her brothers she kept her eyes down cast.

Darin looked at his sister's head and sighed quietly this always happened at gatherings. She would get nervous and think she would do something wrong or upset father, making him hate her.

"Hold your head up, Crystal" Darin whispered casually, as he looked around the room. Taking note of who was where and doing what.

She looked up at him as he smiled. "You are the daughter of Lady Jasmine, one of the most stunning woman in Borton and Lord Damon one of the strictest and kindest men besides our King. Even if he has the shortest temper." The last part was a mere mumble on his lips, but it made Crystal smile anyway.

They descended the stairs grandly and watched across the ballroom under the watchful eye of the court. As one they reached the King and Queen who were seated upon their Throne on an upraised platform.

The Queen was a grand lady who had an air of elegance and grace surrounding her. She wore the bright gold and red of her status, and had a beautiful gold tiara on her head. The tiara set off her emerald eyes and shiny dark brown hair.

The King wore the same colors but darker. His crown was solid gold and shown brightly, in the middle was a large ruby. His dark eyes and light brown hair was hawk like in appearance as he sat in his chair.

Standing behind the Queen, on her left, was the Prince. He was a boy of 17 and stood looking down on them his air, that of arrogance. He had his mother's emerald eyes and his father's light brown hair. He stood in his red trousers and his gold tunic was trimmed in red frills.

David and Darin bowed as Crystal curtsied, "Your Majesties." They said together as was required before straightening up. The King nodded his head in acceptance and they were dismissed.

Crystal let out a quiet sigh before turning and looking for her parents. This time had gone far better then the gathering 4 years ago. The year before she had gotten into a fight with some of the other noble boys. After that and a grand lecture from her father she had to stay in her room. This time she at least made it to the Banquet. They reached their parents with no incidents at all.

"Very good Crystal," Lord Damon told her his eyes shining with pride.

"Thank you, Father," she whispered back tiredly.

"Now, I want you to mingle and try not to draw too much attention. Not like last time" Lady Jasmine told her children, glaring pointedly at Crystal.

She gave her mother a hesitant laugh before taking off in the opposite direction. She headed for the balcony trying to avoid as many people as possible. She was about to reach her destination when a voice stopped her.

"Hello Crystal, how have you been?" She turned to look at the person who was addressing only to sigh with relief.

"Oh Tania! It's just you." Tania smiled, she was an old friend of Crystal's. Whenever they got together mischief always followed. They caused both their parents trouble when they were younger.

Tania was a tall girl who was the same age as Crystal. She loved to shoot her arrows as much as Crystal liked getting into fights. She had long, bright, black hair that made her gentle gray eyes glow. She wore a dark purple dress and her hair was tied back in intricate knots.

"Why Crystal, I'm surprised that you made it this far, and you have even kept that wild temper in check. I am impressed." A giggle escaped her as Crystal glared.

"I'm not that bad."

"You gave the 2 boys you were fighting black eyes and you broke one of their arms!" she laughed. "And where were you headed off to in such a hurry? Not trying to escape I hope."

"Of course not, Tania, whatever gave you that idea?"

"Your halfway off the balcony," she stated monotonously.

"I don't want to embarrass my parents this year. So I'm going to stay in the garden till dinner. Want to come?" she asked.

"Mmmm, think about it," she tilted her head "weigh the consequences, and make a decision. Okay, I'll come," Crystal laughed nervously.

Tania is always like that, How could I forget? She's always taking to herself. These thoughts ran through her head as she and Tania jumped over the balcony. Landing with a bent knee, they stood up and brushed the few clinging grasses from their dresses. They entered the large and lush gardens of the royal family.

"Lets see the rose gardens," Crystal suggested.

"Why do we have to go see the rose gardens every year. You know they don't change that much, right?"

"Yeah, I know but I just love the white roses."

"What's this? The famous Crystal has a feminine side. Oh no! The world's going to end!"

"Oh, Please. You know very well I do, I just don't show it that often is all."

"Yeah, Yeah, I know. Let's get going and see them. Or we won't be back in time for dinner.
