Life and Death
-4-
Zelda decided to finally run up the stairs to visit the distraught looking Impa. She heard quiet sobbing coming from Impa's room and she suddenly ran as fast as she could down the hall and knocked hard on the door.
"Impa?!" she shouted.
"Come in Zelda," she heard her father saying calmly. Zelda gradually opened the door and slid her head into the room to see Impa lying on her bed, face down into a soft white pillow; Harkinian was sat in a chair next to her bed stroking her back trying to calm her. Zelda slowly approached Impa.
"What's the matter?" she asked in a whisper.
"Melody died this morning," Harkinian replied, "from a fatal injury formed in battle."
"I am so sorry," said Zelda, "should I go and tell Faith?"
Impa nodded her head.
"Tell her-tell her to-come home," Impa said in between her sobs.
Zelda ran out of the door and dashed into her room. She rummaged through some potions and picked up a pink-blue bottle with dust in it.
"I have no time," Zelda said dabbing some dust to her finger and smashing it at her, "Kokiri forest." Automatically she was transported to the Kokiri Forest. Zelda sprinted towards Link's house.
Meanwhile, Link and Faith lay in Link's bed snuggled up to each other; oblivious to anything else around them. A rude knock at the door interrupted them; Faith shot up and wrapped the blanket around her body.
"Come in," she shouted.
"Faith," said Zelda, "I have some bad, bad news."
"What is it?" she asked confusedly.
"Your-your mother has died," said Zelda lowering her head.
"I thought it would be soon," admitted Faith, "that's how I ended up at the castle. I didn't want to come, but I am glad I did because I have met many new friends. My mother was already dying at the blow of the sword. She was bleeding internally and she is stubborn and wouldn't let the doctors just kill her, not nastily but with a suicide pill. Anyways, I was the only one who knew she was actually dying. The blade penetrated her side and pierced a lung."
"I am sorry," said Zelda, "but Impa is upset and wants you back home." Faith nodded her head. Zelda left the house and sat on the balcony.
Faith quickly got dressed and kissed Link goodbye, who was already asleep, and then walked onto the balcony. She stood next to Zelda.
"You ready?" she asked. Faith nodded. Zelda threw more dust over her and Faith and said, "Hyrule Castle." They were soon there inside the entrance hall.
Both girls ran as fast as they could to try and get to Impa's room. They opened the door and saw Impa was now calmed down and sitting up in her bed, Harkinian still sat where he was. Faith ran up to Impa who was distressed.
"I'm sorry," she said hugging Impa.
"You knew," Impa replied angrily. Faith was taken aback and tears swelled in her eyes.
"I am terribly sorry," Faith cried trying to hug Impa. The stubborn Sheikah gave in and hugged her niece tight. "I'm sorry," she repeated.
"It's ok," said Impa, "you do realize that you'll have to stay at the castle now." Faith nodded and smiled at the same time.
* * * *
Three whole months passed and both Faith and Zelda were becoming to act as if they were sisters, considering what had happened between them.
Faith woke up one morning, like any other morning, and did her morning routine; dressed, washed and wake Zelda, but some times she'd already be awake. On this particular morning Zelda was awake, unbeknown to any living being, today would change the course of Faith's life. Zelda looked at her door as Faith walked in, Zelda looked gloomed.
"What is it?" Faith asked walking toward her; Zelda sat at her window seat.
She sighed and finally said, "There's a routine doctor check every three to four moths and today we have one; I hate them."
"Nothing is going to go wrong," said Faith.
A couple of hours later Faith walked out of the small room that the doctor had her office in. Faith had tears starting to slowly run down her face, she ran for her room and pushed the door open. She slammed the door behind her and flung herself onto the bed and cried even harder into a pillow that she grabbed.
"I'm pregnant," she wailed, although it was muffled.
After a couple of moments of crying, Faith slowly brought herself into a sitting position. She rubbed her hand over her swelled stomach and sighed. She had no choice. Faith got up and slowly made her way to the door, she slowly opened it and made her way down the hall. She saw Zelda's room and passed it and sidled into the room next to it, Impa's room. Faith opened the door and gave a sigh of relief as she saw that Impa wasn't there. It was now or never, she thought. She walked up to Impa's desk and picked up a dagger that lay there. Faith quickly shut the door and ran to her room.
Faith was sat on her bed; she caressed her stomach once more before she examined the blade that she would use. It had a sharp blade with a strong wooden handle. Faith tensed both of her wrists to see which one would be best to use, it would be the left one. She exhaled deeply and placed the blade right up to her left wrist. She slid it across smoothly and blood oozed out of her fresh cut. She dropped the blade with the shock and held her wrist. The blood was a rich red that started to drip down onto the floor. Faith began to sway about, her head felt dizzy and she couldn't think straight.
Footsteps came along the hallway and Zelda then entered Faith's room.
"Faith!?" she screamed.
"N-n-no," Faith said, she could hardly get the words out.
Zelda shook her head frantically looking for a thick cloth to cover Faith's wound. She couldn't wait any longer and just decided to use her blanket. Zelda held it close to the skin and looked into Faith's fear filled eyes.
"Stay still," said Zelda calmly.
Zelda shot up like a bullet and ran down to the doctor's office, her dress trailed behind her.
"Help me," she said as she opened the door. Zelda didn't even stop she just ran back to Faith's room, the doctor in trail.
Both females entered Faith's room. The doctor pulled the cloth that Zelda had put on Faith's wrists and wiped the dried blood around the wound while fresh blood still trickled from it. Faith winced as the wet cloth hit her skin by the open cut. Quickly, the doctor removed a needle from her satchel and along with some cotton; she acted fast not for Faith to loose anymore blood than she already had.
A couple of minutes and she was done with the surgery.
"Why did you try to kill yourself dear?" asked the doctor putting Faith to bed.
"I-I didn't want to through with things any-anymore," Faith stammered.
"But your going to give birth to a child in six or so months," said the doctor smiling. Zelda gasped.
"Link will be so happy," said Zelda almost crying with joy.
"I-I'll tell him," Faith said, "call him over here late-later." Zelda nodded and went over to Faith's side.
"You look after her now," said the doctor. Zelda and Faith both only smiled at her.
The female doctor left the room and back down the hallway to her office, Impa saw her. She was curious to why she had left Faith's room in the first place. She was sure to find out. Impa made her way slowly to Faith's room; she slowly opened the door to see Faith in bed and Zelda sitting next to the bed. Impa pulled her hand up to her mouth.
"What in the name Din happened here?" she asked.
Faith and Zelda both explained the whole story between them. Some of it disturbed Impa to hear, but she still listened, every now and then her ears would prick up.
"Are you going to tell Link?" Impa asked Faith. She nodded. Impa left the room and shut the door behind her.
"Later though," she said to go with her nod of the head, "Some Warrior I turned out to be."
"How did you become the Warrior of the Sheikah clan anyway?" Zelda asked.
"Every time a Sheikah is born with emerald green eyes instead of red, they are unique," Faith replied to Zelda's question, "there is only ever one warrior at one time. It is my turn until I die or live until I am twenty-nine, once pass that age, my eyes become as a normal Sheikah. Impa, believe it or not, was the warrior before my mother. My mother was twenty-eight when she got pregnant with me, and then just turned twenty-nine when I was born, so I then would become the Warrior of the Sheikah."
"Wow," said Zelda in amazement, "the history of the Sheikah sounds very interesting."
Many hours past and Zelda never left Faith's bedside. Suddenly Zelda jumped up and smiled at Faith.
"Do you want me to go and fetch Link?" she asked. Faith nodded. Zelda hesitated to leave the room but then did.
Zelda ran into her own room and fetched the same pink-blue bottle with dust in it.
"Kokiri Forest," she said clearly. Again she was quickly teleported there.
Link sat outside and he saw Zelda run toward him.
"Come with me," she said grabbing his hand, before he could ask any questions Zelda said, "Hyrule Castle."
Back in Faith's room, Faith stood up and looked at herself in a mirror. Her face was paler than ever and her bright emerald eyes were now dull and lifeless. She turned around quickly as Link and Zelda entered her room. Link ran up to Faith and pulled her into a tight embrace and then held his hands on her shoulders and Faith was arm length away from him. Zelda left Faith and Link to be alone.
Zelda walked down into the Castle Library where she saw Dylan.
"Hey Zelda," he called, Zelda looked at him.
"Hi Dyl," she replied giving him a hug. "You may not believe this but," she started, "Faith's pregnant and she tried to commit suicide not many hours ago."
"How far is she?" asked Dylan.
"Three months," Zelda replied smiling a bit now. Dylan took her hand and held it.
"She'll be fine," he reassured her. Zelda's reply was just a small nod.
Back upstairs in Faith's room, Link stood with Faith.
"What happened?" he asked seeing the blood on her sleeve from the wound on her left wrist.
"You're going to be a father," she said to Link.
Link had tears in his eyes as he was so happy. He looked deep into Faith's eyes and caressed her cheek.
"Why would you want to kill yourself then?" he asked in a calm voice trying not to upset her.
"I thought I couldn't live," she cried. Link pulled her in quick for another hug.
"We'll get through this," said Link, "don't you worry about it."
Faith nodded. Link put her to bed and didn't leave her side until she had the color back into her fair skin and was feeling really up for it. He held her hand as he sat next to her and smiled as she slept.
