The start of Junior year...

Kay trotted across the High School's grounds, her bookbag in her arms. Kay waved to everyone as she walked back, but they could only stare. Today, Kay wore slim blue jean capris, a baby blue Billabong sweatshirt, and the same sandals she was wearing the night she dumped Michael, and met Kenny. Her legs, slim, smooth, and nicely tanned were the object of all the men's attention. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she saw someone waving frantically. Kay squealed, and smiled, running over to Kenny. He hadn't changed much...just maybe gotten a little taller.
"Kenny! It's so good to see you!" Kay said, smiling up at him. Kenny grinned back at her, his blue eyes filled with happiness. Suddenly, Kay heard a voice behind her, and turned around.
"Kay?!"
"Michael! How pleasant to see you." Kay said icily, smiling coldly.
"You look lovely, Kay. I'd like you to meet my finance, Iris." Michael said, smiling down at a small, petit girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She smiled wickedly at Kay, and Kay snarled at her.
"I can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to marry you." Kay said, turning around on her heel, and walking off. Kenny bit his lip to keep from laughing at Michael's embarassed expression. Iris growled after Kay, pulling Michael away. Kenny sat back down on the school benches, studying dutifully.

Kay burst in to the tiny coffee shop sobbing, and sat down at the counter, head in her arms. Luckily, there was no one in there except the owner, a middle aged woman with jet black hair and green eyes. The woman, with a nametag that said Treena, looked down at Kay sympathetically, and patted her head.
"Old boyfriend?" Treena asked. Kay nodded, sobbing. "Eh, they're all jerks anyway." Treena said, chuckling bitterly. Kay laughed a little, looking up.
"Hey, I object to that."
Treena and Kay looked over to the door, and saw Kenny leaning in the doorjamb. Kay and Treena laughed.
"Kay, this is my mom, Treena. We call her Treena." Kenny said, sliding into a seat beside Kay. Kay looked suprised.
"Really? Did you just open up?" Kay asked Treena, or Treena. Treena nodded sadly.
"Yes, and I haven't had one customer." Treena said bitterly. Kenny patted his mother's shoulder. Kay smiled understandingly and then turned to Kenny.
"Did you follow me here?" Kay asked. Kenny swallowed hard, and glanced away, nodding slightly. Treena decided that this was a good time to go check on the muffins that were baking in the back, and slipped out.
"Kenny, that's so sweet." Kay said, offering him a smile that melted his heart. Kenny swallowed again, and tried to smile back.
"It's just that...I didn't want to see you hurt, or anything. He's a big jerk anyway. I felt guilty letting you just walk off, so when Michael and his toy left, I grabbed all my stuff, and took off after you." Kenny said, fumbling with the zipper on his jacket.
"You're so cute, Kenny, when you're nervous." Kay said, chuckling. Kenny blushed lightly, and twined his fingers together tightly, as if forming an emotional wall that he knew would come down. Kay slipped her hand over his, and unlatched his fingers to lace hers together with his.
"Thank you for being a good friend. I really appreciate it. Maybe friend is the right word for now, but maybe not in the future." Kay said, smiling secretly, and leaning forward. Her perfect lips brushed across his cheek, and she slipped from his grasp, walking out. When the door closed behind her, Kenny nearly fell off of his stool, feeling faint. Treena came back from the bake room, saw Kenny's expression, and patted him lightly on his cheek (not the one Kay kissed, to his relief).
"Kenny, my boy, you have got to learn how to handle women. It's written all over your face how bad you've got it for her. She seems very nice, and is very pretty." Treena said, chuckling as she sliced carrots for a salad. Kenny growled lightly at his mother, placing his chin in his hand. He thought about Kay's last words, "Maybe friend is the right word for now, but maybe not in the future."? Was she suggesting something? He scolded himself for thinking ahead of the game.
"I don't know, Mom. She's like a little safe, all locked up. I just can't find the key." Kenny said, frustrated.
"How long has this been going on?" Treena asked, looking up. Kenny's cheeks flushed lightly.
"Most of the summer. We've been calling each other and talking online the whole summer. Just about little stuff. Nothing personal." Kenny hurriedly explained. Treena chuckled.
"Maybe you've already found the key, but you just don't know how to use it." Treena suggested. Kenny raised an eyebrow, and Treena slapped him lightly on the shoulder.
"Don't be wise with me, buddy. Hey, isn't the Homecoming Dance coming up this week?" Treena asked. Kenny nodded, not catching on. Treena smiled slyly, and Kenny frowned.
"Why don't you ask her?" Treena asked. Kenny's eyes widened.
"Mom! Are you crazy?! She'd probably look at me and laugh. I don't think I could deal with the humiliation." Kenny said miserably.
"You never know until you try!" Treena insisted. "When you work up enough guts, just do it. Don't wait." Treena said.
"Are you saying I don't have guts?" Kenny said, frowning. Treena chuckled, and walked into the back of the restaurant. Kenny growled, scowling. Suddenly, a shriek ripped through the late afternoon haze.
"KENNYYYYYY!!!"
Kenny bolted up, almost falling over his stool as he scrambled towards Kay's voice. He stumbled outside to find Kay being carried away by a strange, tall man, holding her over his shoulder. She pounded his back mercilessly, screaming Kenny's name at every third pound.
"Kay!" Kenny exclaimed, and Kay's head shot up.
"Kenny! Kenny, help me!" Kay yelled, breathless. The man holding Kay turned around, scowling at Kenny. Kenny stood his ground firmly, and clenched his fists to keep them from quivering with anger.
"Put her down, and fight me the right way!" Kenny demanded. The man chuckled, and set Kay down none-too-gracefully. Kay bolted towards Kenny, and crashed into his chest, grasping at his shirt. He could feel her body quivering slightly as he held her tightly, and he snarled with anger.
"You sonofa-" Kenny started, fisting his hands. He was interrupted when Treena stomped out of her shop, brandishing an .18 milimeter. The man's eyes widened as she loaded it smartly.
"Now you get yer sorry ass outta here before I call the cops on you, or I'll blast yer nuts off." Treena thundered.
"Now, listen lady. I was jus' lookin' for some fun. No harm intended. See ya!" the man said quickly, scrambling off.
"Just lookin' for some fun, huh?" Treena growled. She turned to Kay, who was still buried in Kenny's chest. "Are you ok, Honey?" Treena asked softly, gently touching Kay's shoulder. Kay took a shaky breath, and nodded, smiling a little.
"You sure do brandish a gun well, Treena." Kay said, her laugh a little quaky. Treena chuckled, and Kenny smiled. She sighed, and laid her head back down on Kenny's chest, not willing to come back to the real world yet. The threesome walked back into the coffee shop, Treena putting up the 'Closed' sign on her way in. Kenny sat on one of the chairs, lifting Kay into the chair beside him gently. He held her hand protectively, and she looked around warily. Treena slid next to them, resting her chin in her hands, and Kay looked at her.
"What happened, honey?" Treena asked sincerely.
"I was walking home, when all of a sudden...BAM! I felt something hit me on the back of my leg. That guy's one of Michael's friends. He had thrown a rock at my leg, and of course, when I stumbled and fell, he walked over, picked me up, and slung me over his shoulder, carrying me off. I was absolutely stunned for a minute, but then I started screaming Kenny's name at the top of my lungs. I hurt all over. Michael's probably pissed at me for dissing his fiance like that today." Kay said, sighing. Treena patted Kay's cheek softly, comfortingly. Kenny bit his tounge to keep from asking why Michael would do such a thing as to hurt Kay and scare her half out of her wits.
"I know, honey. It'll hurt like hell for a while." Treena said, smiling. Kay smiled. "I have to go fix dinner. See you later, dear." Treena said, trailing off to the back. Kay tried to relax herself, with some success, and looked up at Kenny. He tried to smile at her, but couldn't help frowning with worry.
"I'll be ok, Kenny. Thanks for saving me." Kay said, smiling to try to lighten things up a bit. Kenny smiled back.
"Oh, it was nothing. How could I let you get carried off when you were screaming at the top of your lungs? It wouldn't have been very manly of me." Kenny said, smiling a little again. Kay chuckled. Kay looked at her watch then, and gasped.
"Omigosh! I have to get home!! My mom will kill me!!!" Kay wailed. Kenny shook his head.
"I'll walk you home." Kenny said, at her dread filled eyes. Kay smiled at him.
"Thanks." she said, as they walked out.
It had already gotten dark when they were halfway there. The moon had risen, and shone brightly. Suddenly, at some crackling in the bushes, Kay and Kenny froze. As three large men obviously from a gang stepped from the bushes, one of them the friend of Michaels that had attacked Kay today. He grinned at them cynically.
"Oh my, missy. Michael sure did pick a spicy one, huh?" he said, chuckling. He then turned to Michael and sneered. "Isn't she a little high in social status for you, m'boy?" he asked. Kay fisted her hands, growling.
"Now, you leave him alone!" Kay said, scowling. The man frowned at her.
"No. Now back off. I don't want any trouble with you guys." Kenny said firmly. The man chuckled sadisticly, and shook his head. Suddenly, there was the glare of headlights from a car, and the three men shrunk back.
"We're lettin' you off this time, but you better watch yer backs." the man said, scowling. They ran off, laughing. Kenny heard a car door slam, and a car peal out onto the street, fading away. Kay had begun breathing very fast, and her hands became weak and lax.
"It's ok, Kay." Kenny said soothingly.
"Oh my God...I can't do this anymore. I want to move back to Massachusettes!" Kay said, biting her lip. Kenny grasped her hand, and held it tight, and they started walking again, towards Kay's house. When they arrived at the quaint house, Kenny knocked on the door, and it opened to reveal a large man of about 45 or so, with jet black hair streaked with gray.
"Ohh, Honey! There you are! We were so worried!!!" the man cried, as Kenny released Kay, and she ran to her father. He enveloped her in a hug, kissing the top of her head.
"Dakota, invite the poor boy in!" came a woman's voice. Lily poked her head underneath Dakota's big arms, and smiled at Kenny. Kenny smiled back nervously. Dakota chuckled sheepishly.
"Ah, sorry 'bout that, m'boy. Come on in!" Dakota said warmly. Lily led Kenny to the kitchen, and sat him down at a table where a little girl with red hair in curly ringlets galore stared at him with her green eyes cynically.
"I'm Darcy." the girl volunteered, holding out her small hand. Kenny chuckled, and shook it.
"I'm Kenny." Kenny said, smiling. Darcy smiled back. After Kay had finished explaining to her parents what had happened, they called Kenny to the living room. Kay sat in her father's lap like a little child, smiling as Kenny walked in.
"Ah, it's my saviour." Kay said, smiling. Kenny blushed lightly.
"But it's only the truth. You must be Kenny, the boy Kay has told us all about." Lily said warmly. Kenny smiled, his blush becoming more pronounced.
"Boy, I don't think I want you walking home. You'll stay here for the night, sleeping in here." Dakota said seriously, more of a command than a request. Kenny was about to protest when he remembered the three Seniors.
"Well, I guess I could call my mom at the cafe." Kenny said.
"I'll get you the phone," Kay said, hopping off her father's lap and bounding into the kitchen.
"She sure rebounds fast from trauma." Kenny remarked.
"Oh, you noticed, too." Lily said, smiling wryly. Kenny and Dakota chuckled. Kay slid back in, dropping the cordless phone into Kenny's hands carefully, and trailing back to her father. "Is your mother Treena? The one who just opened that cute cafe?" Lily asked. Kenny nodded and smiled.
"Hello?" came Treena's sleepy voice on the other end of the line.
"Mom? It's Kenny. I'm going to stay at the Patrick's tonight, because Kay and I had another meet-up with that friend of Michael's and two of his buddies tonight, ok?" Kenny asked.
"Oh, ok, honey. Don't do anything stupid, and remember your P's and Q's." Treena said sharply.
"Ok, ok. Bye Mom. Love you." Kenny said, hanging up.
"We'll set you up on the couch, ok Kenny?" Kay asked.
"Sure thing!" Kenny said, smiling. Kay smiled back, and Dakota and Lily smiled secretly to each other.
