Chapter 11:
Seifer leaned against the hood of his car and lit a cigarette. He hadn't bothered showing up to his remaining few periods after
getting thrown out from Mr. Garrison's lesson. The blonde was still feeling pissed, the sullen look on his face warning all the
by-passers of this. The sky was filling with dark clouds, and it looked like it would rain soon. Seifer inhaled his smoke and eyed
the school entrance. 'His last period should be over any minute now...'
Before the blonde could inhale his cigarette again, the bell rang. A few minutes later the double doors opened and a crowd of
students flowed out. Seifer blew out a grey cloud of smoke and stub out his cigarette. He got inside his Porsche and sat on the
driver's seat. For a long time the blonde waited, watching the crowd, his fingers drumming against the steering-wheel.
'Come on Squall, where are you? ...I didn't miss you, did I?' Just then Seifer spotted Squall, walking in the middle of the crowd
It wasn't hard since Squall was all dressed in black as usual. 'Please don't take the buss!' Seifer hoped inwardly as he watched
the brunette boy walk out of the school yard. When Squall turned right, instead of walking to the buss, Seifer smirked, feeling
like lady luck was finally on his side. He got the engine going and curved out of the parking lot, onto the driveway. By the time
the blonde was nearing Squall with his car, it was already raining hard. Squall quickened his pace, not noticing Seifer's red
Porsche at first. For some time the blonde drove beside Squall with a low speed. He was about to press the horn, when Squall
finally stopped walking and turned to see who was following him. The frown that spread onto Squall's face made it pretty clear
he hadn't hoped to run into Seifer. The brunette boy just twined his arms around his torso and kept walking.
Seifer wasn't going to give up so easily and kept following Squall with his car. It was pouring outside and he knew the younger
boy was probably soaked and freezing by now. Finally Squall stopped and turned to face Seifer, looking annoyed. He stood still
and watched as the blonde stopped the car and opened the passenger seat window.
"Are you following me Seifer??" Squall snapped, his teeth clattering unintentionally from the cold and being all wet.
"Get in Squall..." Seifer ordered from inside the car. The brunette boy took a step back and shook his head.
"What? No way!" he refused, narrowing his eyes at Seifer. The blonde sighed and motioned for Squall to get in.
"Come on, I'll take you home. It's pouring rain out there!" Seifer persuaded and watched as Squall wiped his wet hair from his
face.
"No....I don't need a ride...besides, I'll wet your car." The younger boy mumbled.
"I don't mind...just get in." Seifer continued and leaned forward to open the door for Squall.
"Yes you do...it's a Porsche..." For some time the brunette stood still, not sure what he should do. The rain only got harder,
letting Squall know the weather was obviously on Seifer's side. He glanced up to the sky and realized the sun was nowhere to
be seen. Reluctantly Squall let his eyes travel back to Seifer and finally took a step forward.
"Fine...but this doesn't mean we're back to being friends!" he warned and seated himself down on the passenger seat.
"I know, I know." Seifer smirked, but didn't let Squall see this.
For a long time the younger boy was silent. He kept following the windshield washers with his eyes, and how the raindrops ran
down the glass. Every now and then Squall sneezed, this being the only sound breaking the silence in the car, save the low
humming from the engine. Seifer kept glancing in Squall's direction, noting the sulking look on the boy's face. Squall knew
Seifer was watching him and hesitantly turned his face to look at the blonde.
"We need to talk..." Seifer finally noted. Squall snorted and turned to look out of the window and pressed his lips tightly
together. The blonde let out a somewhat frustrated sigh and squeezed the steering-wheel with his hands. Squall blinked his eyes,
feeling slightly ashamed, knowing his behaviour was childish. When he finally decided to speak, they were already driving
down his street.
"...Ok, fine! Sorry about the acid thing earlier today..." Squall exclaimed and kept his angry gaze on the houses they drove by.
"Do you really mean that?" Seifer asked and watched Squall from the corner of his eye. The brunette boy tried to stay angry, but
by and by the sulking look faded from his face and was replaced with remorse.
"...I-I do...It was stupid, I know...I could have really hurt you Seifer...I-I wasn't thinking straight...I don't know what went into
me...I was just so damn angry at you!"
"Well, I'm just glad you didn't throw it on my face..." Seifer commented and forced a smile onto his lips, trying to lighten up the
mood. The look on Squall's face however remained serious. Seifer could feel the brunette's grey eyes fixed on the black mark,
circling his eye.
"...And sorry for the black eye too...even if you *did* deserve it Seifer...!" Squall felt the need to remind the blonde he wasn't
forgiven yet. Seifer gave him a faint nod and eyed himself from the rear mirror. The bruised eye had already begun to heal, but
still looked a bit nasty.
"Hey that's my house, right there!" Squall noted. Seifer looked out of the window and realised he had almost driven pass
Squall's house. He gave a nod and stopped the car in front of the building. Instead of getting off the car, Squall leaned back in
his seat and turned to face Seifer.
"...I heard you lost your friends..." the younger boy spoke with a low voice. Seifer just waved his hand and shook his head.
"Nah, they were never truly my friends...I see that now." He looked out of the window and into the direction of 'Hilltop Valley'.
"...I guess the only reason I used to hang out with them was because we're all rich kids, live in the same area and play football.
Those things were all we had in common."
"And the fact that you're all popular..." Squall added. Seifer shook his head.
"Correction, *were* popular, Squall." The blonde remarked. "By the looks of it, my popularity is living its period of
depression." Seifer continued, his voice filled with self-irony. He gave Squall a little smile. "Funny, but I actually don't miss
being popular...Maybe because I do still receive some respect from the other students...but that's just because of my size." the
blonde chuckled, but went serious again.
"I can't believe it took me so fucking many stupid screw ups just to realise fame isn't everything..." Seifer looked Squall straight
in the eye. "...And to realise who my true friends are...too bad I just didn't see that in time." The blonde gave Squall a
meaningful look. The younger boy blinked his eyes, feeling slightly bewildered.
"I...I have to--" Squall turned in his seat and opened the door to get out, but stopped before he could lay his foot on the ground.
He squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath, then slowly turned around again.
"Seifer do you promise me you'll never hurt my feelings again?!" Squall looked Seifer straight in the eye, a demanding look on
his face.
"I promise you Squall." The older boy answered without a moment's hesitation.
"Never?"
"Never ever." Seifer said with a firm voice and shook his head.
'I...I think he truly means it...' The brunette let out a relieved sigh and gave a nod. He leaned closer and lay his hand on the
blonde's shoulder.
"Friends?" Squall asked, and watched Seifer from under his brows with questioning eyes. The wide smile that spread onto
Seifer's face was enough to answer Squall's question.
"Friends." The older boy nodded. 'And maybe something more in the future ...I hope.' He added in his mind, a smirk playing on
his lips.
"Wanna come over for...umm...a cup of coffee maybe?" Squall suggested, sounding happy. "You can smoke on the porch too..."
"Sure Squall, but won't your dad be pissed if I do that?" Seifer narrowed his eyes, meaning the smoking.
"He won't be home before six, so I don't think he'll mind." The younger boy chuckled and got off the car. Seifer did the same,
and quickly they ran across the yard, getting wet, even if the distance was short.
"Talk about a nasty weather!" Seifer exclaimed and waited for Squall to find the house key. When the brunette finally managed
to get the door open, it was his turn to welcome Seifer into his home.
"Ok, this is where I live..." the brunette boy spoke and waited for Seifer to get in. Since it was cloudy outside, he turned on the
hall lights.
"You can leave your shoes over there." Squall pointed with his finger and took his own pair off. Seifer did the same and
followed Squall out of the hall.
'This is so different from my place...Much more cosier and ...more plain too...but I like it.' The blonde thought in his mind and
was about to step into the living room.
"Umm...don't I get to look around?" Seifer asked when he saw Squall make his way up the stairs. The brunette turned to face
him and leaned against the handrail.
"I thought we'd get rid of these wet clothes first?" Squall explained and felt the wet shirt with his hand. Seifer gave an
approving nod and followed the younger boy upstairs. Squall felt somewhat nervous as he pushed the door of his room open.
He remembered how tidy Seifer's room had been when he visited it, and knew his own hadn't been cleaned for a long time.
Squall stepped aside and let Seifer enter his room.
The blonde let his eyes wander around the small room. The bed was made, but there were some clothes on it. The chair next to
it was also hidden under a pile of Squall's clothes. Seifer raised his brows as he lay his eyes on the desk, filled with school
books and miscellaneous stuff. 'Where does he do his homework?'
The blonde walked around the room and finally turned to face Squall. The younger boy was slightly blushing and eyed his
room, looking somewhat ashamed.
"You, Squall Leonhart, are not the most tidy person in the world." Seifer stated and couldn't help but to laugh. Squall met his
eyes, looking surprised. He had been sure his room would shock Seifer.
"But neither am I. The only reason my room looks so organized is because my dad hired a maid to clean it every week." The
older boy chuckled and sat down on the bed. "Ok, let's get rid of these damn wet clothes already."
Squall gave a nod and picked a shirt from the pile on his chair. When he turned around, Seifer was already pulling his wet
hoodie off. He threw it on the bed and met Squall's eyes.
"You don't mind if I wear only this?" Seifer asked and pointed at his yellow, sleeveless game shirt.
"N-no, of course not...#33 Almasy." Squall smiled.
Seifer looked a bit confused but then lay his eyes on the shirt and noted the print on it. "Oh yeah, that's my number in the
team..."
When Squall made no effort to remove his own shirt, Seifer raised his brows and gave the younger boy a questioning look.
"Aren't you gonna take that off?" he asked and noted how uncomfortable Squall suddenly looked.
"...Yeah...I-I am." The younger boy stammered and began to remove his shirt. Seifer watched Squall and remembered how the
brunette boy had acted in his room some weeks ago.
'Why is he so insecure about his body anyway? ...I told him I like the way he looks...' Seifer got his answer when Squall finally
removed the wet shirt, his torso now naked. The younger boy lowered his flushed face when he noticed how Seifer's eyes
widened, even if it probably was unintentional.
For some time, all Seifer could do was stare. There was a big, long scar on Squall's torso. It began from under his navel and
ended under the left armpit. 'Shit!...Where'd he get that...?' Seifer blinked his eyes when Squall finally twined his arms around
himself to hide the mark. The brunette kept his eyes on the floor as Seifer took a step forward.
"...I never knew you had that..." the older boy finally spoke. "...Was it the dog that attacked you?" Squall gave him a nod and
slowly raised his gaze.
"I hate the way it makes me look...it's disgusting! This is why I don't like to shower with everybody else after gym class on
Fridays..." the brunette exclaimed, sounding agitated. Seifer remained silent and hesitantly brought his hand towards Squall.
The brunette let out a surprised gasp when he suddenly felt Seifer's index finger trace the scar all the way down to his navel.
"It's not disgusting Squall." The older boy said and kept tracing the mark. Squall was taken aback by the fact that Seifer had
actually been able to touch his scar. The blonde could see it from his face. After a moment, Squall finally blinked his eyes and
took a few steps back. Seifer met the brunette's eyes and realised he had to do something to normalize the situation before
things got awkward.
"W-well Squall...I bet there's something you didn't know about me either!" he informed and forced a smile onto his lips.
Squall pulled the clean shirt on and met Seifer's eyes again.
"Really? ...What?"
"Umm....well...let's see now..." Seifer narrowed his eyes and scratched his head. "Oh yeah! I bet you didn't know I'm half
Swedish, did you?" [1] he revealed, pleased when he saw the surprised look on Squall's face.
"Really?? You mean that country far away in the north?" the younger boy exclaimed, sounding excited. Seifer smiled and gave
a nod.
"Yeah! I was actually born there. You see my mom was Swedish, but she died when I was very little. That's when my dad took
me here with him."
"Can you say something in Swedish? Please?" Squall begged, looking as enthusiastic as he had with George the gecko. Seifer
smiled, happy to see Squall like that.
"Sure...let me think now...well how's this: 'Jag älskar dig'." [2] The blonde spoke.
"That was wonderful...But what does it mean?" Squall wanted to know. Seifer blinked his eyes nervously and the younger boy
noticed he was suddenly blushing too.
"Umm...I'll tell you some other time..." Seifer mumbled and lowered his gaze.
"W-why not now?" Squall was confused, not understanding why he wasn't allowed to know.
"...I don't think you're ready to hear it Squall..." Seifer said, looking serious. "How about we have that cup of coffee now? I at
least need to smoke..." he changed the subject and walked to the door. Squall narrowed his eyes, thinking Seifer was being
suspicious, but followed the blonde out of the room.
