Final Fantasy VII: The Jenova War
Chapter One: The Group Called Avalanche
By: Demon Priestess Saturn
He walked slowly up the staircase to the rooftop. He was supposed to be there in minutes but he didn't care. Outside he could hear shouting and various sounds of the war erupting around the little town. As he opened the door and stepped out onto the roof the sounds intensified. He walked along the roof heading towards the nearest metal overhang above one of the many-gated entrances. He climbed out onto the overhang and made his way to the center. Walking around various metal shafts while loading his sniper rifle. Ducking behind one metal shaft he peeked around the corner and aimed his rifle. Peering through the scope a set of cargo boxes caught his attention. Where a man dressed in black leather with a torn long red cape was hiding. He felt frustrated as he tried to get the man in his scope. Finally he noticed a white barrel just to the side of the man he was aiming at. He smiled to himself as he realized it was one of Shinra's white ammunition barrels that had red large bold letters on it saying `warning' on the front. He smiled as he aimed for the barrel and fired. He could hear the explosion from where he sat he even heard the groups leader yell the man's name.
“Vincent!” The spiky blonde haired leader yelled as he turned to where Vincent was hiding. The man couldn't help but smile as he watched the ex-soldier get fear in his eyes. Glancing back he could see that he destroyed the cargo boxes but at least the one they called Vincent was lying on the ground with his back facing him unmoving. He loaded his gun and aimed it once more. This time his sights was on a man with semi-long brown hair and a nicely trimmed beard. He was wearing a dark blue coat and had a small purple cat fighting off soldiers next to him. He was the one they called Reeve Tuesti, commissioner of the World Regenesis Organization also known as the WRO. He watched Reeve knock out two other soldiers with a rifle.
“Cloud!” Reeve turned around and yelled for their spiky haired leader.
“What?” Cloud turned around to see Reeve get hit in the chest by a bullet out of nowhere. “Reeve!” Cloud yelled as his eyes darted around the area. “We have a sniper!”
“What?” A colored man yelled from a crossed the courtyard. He was a bulky man with a gun attached to one arm.
“Cloud said there's…” A woman dressed in black with long brown hair was suddenly shot through the shoulder.
“Tifa!” The colored man yelled.
“Barret! Take Tifa and get out of here!” Cloud yelled.
“But what…” Barret was cut off.
“Just do it!” Cloud yelled. Barret started cussing as he grabbed Tifa and ran off. The man stood up from his hiding spot behind the metal shaft and walked back to the roof. He quickly pulled his handgun and ran down the stairs. He opened the door to the building and headed out into the courtyard. He passed by a pile of rubble to his left with a scruffy blonde haired man partially buried underneath it. To his right was a girl with short black hair lying on her back. Her eyes were closed and she was covered in blood. Her very revealing outfit was in shreds. He however could careless about the already dead he had a bigger fish to catch as he quickly walked in Cloud's direction holding the gun read. Cloud must have caught sight of him because he looked at him wide-eyed like a deer caught in the headlights. “It can't be…”
“It is.” He said as he shot Cloud in the head. He then proceeded to walk over to where Reeve was sitting leaning against the wall. As he came around the corner Reeve looked up.
“Why?” Reeve looked hurt. He only smiled at him and said.
“Because I can.” He fired one last shot.
………………….
“Hey!” Barret yelled. Cloud opened his eyes and looked up at the big bulky man and blinked a few times. “We're almost to the reactor. I didn't hire you to lay around and sleep.”
“You didn't hire me at all.” Cloud mumbled as he turned on to his side. “What a weird dream. I wonder who all those people were.” Cloud sat up and looked out the window as they came into the train stop for sector one. As the train started to slow Cloud stood up and grabbed his buster sword and headed towards the exit. He jumped down off the train and looked up at the big buildings all around him.
“Hey you there!” Cloud looked over to see one of the station's guards. He walked over holding a large gun in his hands. He stopped just feet from Cloud and looked him up and down. “Your clothing looks rather suspicious.”
“What's wrong with it?” Cloud looked over his one-piece purple jumpsuit and then back at the guard dressed in red.
“Let me see your ticket.” The guard said as his eyes drifted to Cloud's buster sword. Cloud glanced over the guard's shoulder at another station guard who was now looking in his direction. “Hey! Did you hear me? I said let me see your ticket.” The guard repeated himself. Cloud smirked as he saw a tall slender man dressed in green jump down behind the guard farthest away and struck him in the back of the head with a gun. The guard in front of Cloud turned quickly only to be hit in the face but another gun.
“Well I guess that's one way to get the guards off our asses.” The stalky man now standing in front of Cloud replied.
“Thanks Wedge.” Cloud said calmly.
“Hey! I thought I told you to stay out of trouble! Now get your ass moving! We have a mission to complete!” Barret snapped.
“Yes sir!” The tall slender man replied with a smirk and followed their fearless leader out of the station.
“Hey wait!” Wedge turned and ran after them followed by the only woman in the group. Cloud glanced down and the guards and then slowly started following the group.
“You hold it!” Two Shinra guards suddenly came around the corner aiming there guns at Cloud. Cloud sighed as he held his sword out in front of him. “You're under arrest!”
“I don't think so.” Cloud glared coldly as he jumped forward. With one quick swing Cloud had both of the soldiers lying on the ground in a pool of their own blood. “I don't have time for you.” Cloud flipped his sword onto his shoulder and continued walking in the direction of the mako reactor.
………………….
“Come on Jessie hurry up!” The slender man said impatiently at the girl in the group.
“Hold you horses Biggs! This isn't easy!” Jessie snapped as she continued typing on her laptop.
“Cut her some slack will ya.” Wedge said as he looked over at Cloud. “Hey didn't you used to be part of Soldier?” Cloud only started at him and said nothing.
“Are you guys even sure we can trust him?” Jessie glanced over her shoulder.
“I said used to not is.” Wedge rolled his eyes. “Anyways I don't think I caught your name.”
“It's Cloud.” Cloud said calmly.
“What did I tell you guys about hanging out in groups! Spread out before those soldiers catch you!” Barret snapped.
“Got it!” Jessie said as the gate leading to the mako reactor opened. Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge ran through the gate and headed towards the door down the alley. Barret went to follow them but suddenly stopped. He turned to face Cloud with stern eyes.
“I'll be keeping an eye on you.” Barret glared at him before turning to run through the gate. Cloud followed after him and headed towards the door on the other side of the alleyway. As he a Barret came through the door Cloud could see Wedge run to a door at the other end of the metal walkway.
“I'll keep watch here.” Wedge said as Biggs, Jessie, Barret, and Cloud turned to run down the metal walkway leading into the reactor. As they past through the entrance to the reactor Barret yelled.
“Biggs get working on that code for the first door!”
“I'm on it boss.” Biggs smiled.
“As for you.” Barret turned to Cloud. “Ex soldier. You and me are sticking together from here on.”
“Whatever.” Cloud shrugged. Biggs cracked the first code and entered the room. Jessie ran to the next panel to crack the code to the next door while Biggs stood guard.
“Follow me.” Jessie said as the door opened and she ran to the elevator. Once her, Barret, and Cloud got in the elevator she turned to Cloud. “Push the button over there.” Cloud looked up to the button on the wall of the elevator. He pushed it slowly and they started their decent. Barret stood on the other side of the elevator eyeing him.
“You know they are using these mako reactors for energy. But in doing so they are stealing the life from this planet. That's why I'm doing this. I have to stop them from killing everything.” Barret said to Cloud. Cloud only looked at him and shrugged.
“So… I don't care. It's not my problem.” Cloud shrugged.
“Not you problem! Do you live on this planet or not! It is your problem boy!” Barret was turning red.
“I don't care. I'm only here to get paid.” Cloud retorted as the elevator came to a stop.
“Why you…” Barret punched his hand.
“Come on.” Jessie said as she ran out of the elevator and down the steps. Cloud followed close behind her while Barret took a minute to fume. Once they reached the bottom of the stairs they entered another door. “Just a little bit more.” Jessie jumped onto a pipe and slowly walked over to a ladder. “Come on!” Cloud jumped onto the pipe followed by Barret. Then quickly follow Jessie down the ladders.
“Jessie. You wait here. Me and Cloud will do the rest.” Barret said suddenly just as she was about to climb down the last ladder.
“Okay.” Jessie nodded.
“Let's go boy.” Barret said as he descended the last ladder.
“Whatever.” Cloud mumbled as he followed the bulky man down the ladder. When they reached the bottom of the ladder Barret quickly headed towards the door leading into the main part of the reactor. Cloud followed him calmly and stopped only when Barret stopped and turned to him.
“You set the bomb.” Barret said suddenly.
“Why me? This is your idea.” Cloud mumbled.
“Don't argue with me just do it.” Barret yelled.
“Fine.” Cloud went to walk over to the reactor. Suddenly the room flashed red around him.
Be careful… It's not just a reactor.
Cloud looked around but saw nothing.
“Hey what's wrong with you!” Barret yelled. “Stop wasting time!”
“Right…” Cloud brushed it off and walked over to the reactor and set the bomb. Suddenly the alarm system went off.
“Shit!” Barret yelled. “We need to get out of here!”
“Not yet… Here they come.” Cloud looked up to see a large robot shape like a scorpion heading their way.
“What the hell is that!” Barret said as it landed in the walkway in front of them.
“Intruders must be eliminated.” The robot said. Cloud only smirked and pulled his buster sword of his back.
“This should be fun.” Cloud leaped forward.
“Hey wait!” Barret yelled. “Shit!” Barret started powering up his gun. Once it was at full power he fired it on the scorpion robot. Cloud continued to dance around it. Hacking and slashing his way to any part he could in order to disable it. Barret reloaded his gun and started firing rounds haphazardly, while the scorpion in turn was scanning them and hitting them with it's tail.
“If this was a real scorpion we would so be dead.” Cloud said as he cut off one of the legs.
“Die you piece of shit!” Barret kept firing. The scorpion suddenly lifted its tail in the air.
“Barret! Stop!” Cloud yelled as he jumped back.
“What?” Barret looked at him.
“I said stop!” Cloud yelled.
“What the hell for?” Barret snapped. “We need to kill this damn thing.”
“You keep firing and you'll get us both killed.” Cloud glared. “Its tail is up which means it's lasers are loaded. Shoot it at it will counter attack every time. It's in defensive mode. And trust me those lasers will kill you if your not careful.”
“So what do you want me to do? Stand here and get killed cos we aren't doin anything?” Barret yelled.
“Just wait and dodge.” Cloud said as he dodged one of its mechanical claws.
“This is nuts.” Barret said and he ducked out of the way of the other claw. As they continued to dodge the claws Cloud continued to think. There had to be some way to turn of the defense system.
“Where running out of time.” Cloud mumbled as he glanced back at the clock on the bomb.
“Hey it's moving again!” Barret yelled. Cloud looked back and saw that the scorpion had lowered its tail.
“Now!” Cloud powered up his sword and swung it forward releasing every ounce of energy he had in it. Barret in turn powered up his gun and fired. An electrical surge spurted out of the metal scorpion and it fell to the floor. “Come on we have ten minutes to get out of here!” Cloud said as he swung his sword onto his back hoister and bolted for the door.
“Hey! I'm the one giving the orders!” Barret yelled as he ran after the spiky haired blonde. The two quickly climbed up the ladders leading to the exit. Cloud glanced over at Jessie as he went to go to the next set of ladders.
“Hey Jess come on!” Barret said as he ran to the ladder.
“I'm stuck!” Jessie looked up. Cloud ran over to her and looked down to see her foot was stuck in between the triangular cracks in the metal shaft.
“Hold still.” Cloud reached in between the cracks and pulled off her shoe. Jessie quickly pulled her foot out and got to her feet. “Come on.” Cloud said as he ran to the ladders and started climbing. Jessie followed closely behind him.
“Come on you two!” Barret yelled from the doorway. Cloud jumped back to the ramp in front of the door and waited for Jessie. After she jumped a crossed they went through the door and quickly up the stairs. When the three hit the elevator Cloud quickly pushed the button.
“How much time is left?” Jessie looked at him.
“I'd say about four to five minutes.” Cloud said as the elevator door opened.
“Damn it! Why is the doors closed?” Barret said as they reached the door.
“We've triggered the security system.” Jessie said as she quickly cracked the code. “Biggs! The door!”
“On it!” Biggs cracked the code to the other door. They bolted out of the reactor and down the metal walkway.
“This way!” Wedge yelled as he ran through the door he was guarding. Barret turned the corner with Biggs and ran through the door. Suddenly the walkway shook a loud rumble came from the bottom of the reactor. Jessie fell onto the walkway. Cloud helped her up just as the explosion burst out of the reactor. Cloud pushed Jessie through the door and followed after her. He quickly pulled the door shut and ran down the dimly lit tunnel. They could hear some more rumbling and the lights flickered.
“Wait stop.” Jessie came to a stop. Barret, Biggs, and Wedge also stopped while Cloud came to a halt and looked back the way they came. Jessie pulled out her laptop and pulled up a map of Midgar. “Okay were in the tunnel lining sector 8. There should be a seal hatch down this way that I can bust open to get us in sector 8. Once there we can jump on the train back to sector 7.”
“Alright lets go.” Barret punched his hand. They continue to run down the path until they found the hatch Jessie was talking about.
“Here it is. Everyone get back.” Jessie quickly set the bomb and ran around the corner with the others. They felt a slight rumble and heard a loud bang. Jessie stood up and ran back to the new path she had created and jumped through. Barret, Biggs, Wedge, and Cloud followed after her.
“Okay listen up.” Barret said. “Were all going to split up and meet back at the train station. And watch out for any guards.” Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie split and Barret started heading up the stairs.
“Hey.” Cloud said suddenly.
“What!” Barret snapped. “If this is about you money it can wait until we get back to the hideout.”
“But…” Cloud said as Barret suddenly took off. “Damn it.”
Cloud ran up the staircase and into the main city in sector 8. Most of the people were running around loudly asking others what was going on. Cloud only ignored them and quickly headed for the train station. But that was when he saw her. He stopped in his tracks and stared at the young woman in the street carrying a flower basket. She was a beautiful woman with long brown hair held back in the twist by a large pink ribbon. She wore a long pink button down dress with a small red jean jacket. She glanced around with her large green eyes with a look of confusion on her face. She dusted off her dress and looked down at her brown shoes. She wore a pair of silver bracelets on her wrists and had a small red ribbon tied in the shape of a bow around her neck. She must have felt his stare because she suddenly looked over at him with a shocked look on her face. She blinked a few times and then ran over to him.
“Excuse me.” The woman said to him calmly.
“Huh?” Was all Cloud could muster as he continued to stare at her.
“Do you have any idea what's going on?” She asked. Cloud suddenly snapped into reality and said sternly.
“I don't know but I think you should get out of here.”
“Really?” She seemed to be looking for conformation.
“Yeah I think it's going to get dangerous around here.” Cloud replied.
“Okay.” She nodded and ran off promptly. Cloud watched her disappear around the corner and continued to stare until he heard the train whistle.
“Shit!” Cloud bolted for the station.
“Hey you!” A couple of guards came running up. Cloud quickly decided to ignore them and go the other why.
“Halt!” Two more guards were running his way.
“Damn!” Cloud went to go the other way but soon figured out that he was completely surrounded.
“Hold your hands in the air!” One of the guards shouted. Cloud raised his hands into the air and smirked. He backed slowly to the edge of the stone walkway and leaned into the metal railing. The soldiers began to step closer to him guns ready. Cloud could see the train just coming to the tunnel entrance.
“Don't move.” One soldier said forcefully.
“Sorry guys.” Cloud smirked. “But you've made me miss my train.” Cloud turned suddenly and jumped over the railing. The soldiers started firing and ran to the railing but they were too late. Cloud landed on the train just as it came out from the tunnel. He glanced back at the guards and smirked again. Teasingly waving at them as the train went into the tunnel leading to the main structure. “Idiots.” Cloud climbed down the side of the train car and opened the door. He jumped into the cargo car and shut the door. Turning around he could see Barret, Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge standing there. “Sorry I'm late.”
“Sorry you're late! What the hell were you doing!” Barret yelled.
“Catching the train.” Cloud shrugged.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever! Let's go.” Barret walked into the next car.
“Not bad for your first job.” Biggs smiled and also walked into the next car.
“Yeah good job.” Wedge also followed Biggs and Barret into the next car. Jessie stood up and walked over to Cloud.
“Hey. Thanks for saving my life back there.” Jessie smiled.
“It was no big deal.” Cloud replied. Jessie smiled.
“No but your face is.” Jessie pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the soot off his face. “There. Come on.” She smiled as she walked into the next car. Cloud smirked and followed after her.
